What should I expect to pay?

DH and I don't want to book ship excursion as we prefer to call our own shots. Can we find a local taxi driver at the Limon dock to chauffer us around for the day? If so, what is a reasonable amount to expect to be charged for 4 hours?

You should negotiate a price with the driver before getting into the taxi. I can tell you that gas prices are much higher in Costa Rica than in the states, so keep that in mind. Also Costa Rica has two types of taxis- one is the registered taxis, therefore legal, and the others are the "pirate taxis". The legal taxis are either a red or orange colored car with an upside down yellow triangle on the sides. They are at least insured. Have some plan as to what you want to do and where you want to go, that will help with negotiating the cost. Enjoy your trip!
