Do all parents get a pager when their kids are in the children's program or just certain ages?

Only the parents of the 3-5 year olds are given pagers but they may give them to others under certain circumstances such as if your child has a serious medical condition. It doesn't hurt to ask.

rncruiser is correct. We just got off the Radiance yesterday. Our daughter who is 9 was in the Kids Program and loved it by the way. I did ask about the pagers. They told me they are for 3-5 yr. olds only because "we don't have that many". (their words....)

On our Mariner cruise they didn't even have enough for the 5 year olds. Only the 3's & 4's got them unless you specifically requested one for your 5 year old. We didn't really feel it was necessary with ours.

How would they reach you if there was a problem?

Actually, that is a good question. How old is the child?

For my 9 year old, we decided to check back every "so often", and told her we'd do so, because even though she thought she wanted to do an activity, once it "got underway", if she didn't like it, we could then sign her out. At the 9-11 age group, on the Radiance, you had the option to allow your child to sign him/herself out OR not. We opted NOT to, since we didn't know where we'd be. We did not think it was a good idea, her roaming around, at that age, just "looking" for us. And we did not have the walkie talkies, which is another option. Lots of older kids had them, ages around 12 and up.

My daughters will be 10 and 7 but I don't think I would like my girls checking out of the club, definately not my younger one. The radios might work for us with the older daughter. Do they work ok on the ship as far as reception goes?

Wish I could help on that one. In the elevators I heard kids speaking into them, but they seemed "staticky" to me. I never did listen closely to hear what was said from the other end... maybe someone else can help and tell you if they really work.

The kids program really was super. Lots of fun activities... my daughter enjoyed it.

Although we have not used our walkie-talkies on any of the RCCL cruises, we have used them on our cruises with Carnival. Our son (currently 9) has been under the same guidelines as stated by previous posters. We just came off The Conquest 3/04 and because of the walkie-talkies he was allowed (by us) to sign himself in and out of their camp. We required that he talk with us BEFORE he signed himself out and then come directly to us. This worked perfectly! This way we were also available if needed (did not require this feature to be used).

 

As for the reception, the only place that we found it difficult to use the walkie-talkies was in the area around the casino. Reception was poor on the radio that was near the casino. We assume it has to do with all of the electronics in this area.

 

Two points of caution;

1)Teach the kids proper radio etiquette. 2)Make sure that you have the use of very good radios (many sub-channels, ect) as ships have a great deal of electronics on them.

 

Sorry we don't have direct experience with RCCL, but we didn't need the walkie-talkies until our last 2 cruises. Back on RCCL for our 9/26/04 Hawaii cruise aboard the Serenade (just the 2 of us) .

They had some science activities, (volcanoes) some craft activities (making kites and decorating pillowcases) and lots of games, such as balloon games, scavenger hunts, hula hoop contests, bingo, "name that tune", etc. My daughter was in the kids talent show which she said was a lot of fun. All the kids came in "1st place". There were many more activities, and each day was different, but that should give you a good idea.
