Hazelnut1106 Posted November 8, 2008 #1 Share Posted November 8, 2008 We are taking a Tahiti cruise for the first time and will we taking our own snorkel gear for the first time also. Should be bring our fins with us or not? So many of the ship tours state that they do not provide fins. Do not want the extra weight in our luggage if fins are generally not used or a good idea when snorkeling down there.
bruce-r Posted November 8, 2008 #2 Share Posted November 8, 2008 If I did snorkel, I wouldn't want to do it without fins, but I don't really like to snorkel.
jaws1234 Posted November 8, 2008 #3 Share Posted November 8, 2008 I dont know about Tahiti but we take our fins on every cruise. Most places rent them but it can be a hassle. They do come in handy as you usually have to swim aways from shore when looking for reefs.

You can encounter currents even when shore snorkeling. My standard fins, 23" long and 3 lbs, take up little luggage space. What cruise line are you sailing with? I've snorkeled for nigh on ten years and have NEVER seen a tour, either ship sponsored or independent, that didn't supply fins.
Hazelnut1106 Posted November 8, 2008 Author #5 Share Posted November 8, 2008 We will be on the Tahitian Princess and yes we have always had fins supplied on all other tours we have ever taken but these tour descriptions specifically mention that they do not have fins ... and that they will have a limited supply of masks and snorkels. Thanks for you input. We will most likely take the fins -- better safe than sorry.
Lsimon Posted November 8, 2008 #6 Share Posted November 8, 2008 We always use fins, but usually don't take them if they will be provided or can be rented. We used to carry our own but stopped as it was so much bulk and weight to carry around. Last year we bought some smaller fins that worked really nice as a couple of our planned snorkeling stops wouldn't have any fins available. They were the US Divers Shredder II surf fins. Also, several years ago we bought some thin neoprene fin socks (no soles) that are great when wearing fins designed for bare feet. They protect your feet from scrapes and chaffing and help a lot with fit on rental and excursion fins too. Found them at an online dive equipment site for under $10/pair. If they're allowed, do bring your own.
