prg569 Posted December 1, 2008 #1 Share Posted December 1, 2008 We're debating between booking an excursion from the cruise line vs. one of the companies offering excrusions on shore. For anyone who has used a private company, did you run into any problems? Our thoughts right now are the Belize zoo, possible with the Altun Ha combinations. Any recomendations or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Peter :)
traveljunky99 Posted December 1, 2008 #2 Share Posted December 1, 2008 Peter, We were in Belize on Nov 20. We have 2 kids (2 and 5) and take them with us when we leave the ship. Your options - 1. leave your 2 yr old on the ship. If you are using Carnival they have a pretty good camp for kids. Our kids loved it and preferred to stay in the camp. 2. Cruise companies generally charge more than a local tour operator + you got to be prepared to leave early/as soon as ship tenders. Since the ships tender in Belize it takes about 30 minutes to get to the port. 3. We took a local tour guide and did AltunHa and a city tour. He had a Dodge van with a/c. This way, we were not stuck on a big bus with a big group. It will take you at least 3 1/2 + hour just do Altunha and back. The roads are not very good. We liked AltunHa as it's easy to walk around and you are allowed to climb most of the ruins. You could carry your kid up. Make sure you take water and bug spray. Hope this helps.:)
