Sleeping Situation for 2-yr old

Recommended Posts

I have been looking at the Triumph for an April 09 sailing. I will have a 2-yr old at that point. My only choices for bed configuration are an upper or a room with a convertible sofa for my child. Do the upper berths have railings on them so that my 2-yr old wouldn't fall out? Do I pretty much need to ensure I get a convertible sofa for the safety of my child? Thanks for any insight anyone can give.

We travelled on the Miracle in April, when our DD was 2.5 yrs old. I would recommend that you take a convertible sofa. What you can then do is take the back cushions of the sofa and put them in front of the sofa (where the drawers pull out). Then put the table (there is an oval shaped table in every room) a little away from one part of the wall, and that table will block more than half the sofabed. Thats enough for the kid to not fall off...

I hope I havent confused you...i'll try to look for a picture and attach it so you can see what I mean.

Cant say much about the upper with a railing, since we never were given that option :o

The railing does not extend the whole bed. I would not feel comfortable with my 2 yr old up there. If you dont want the sofa, you could take the matress off the top bunk at night and put it on the floor.

We just took the cough and pushed it against the wall for our 3-year-old. It was the perfect size for him, our steward made it up like a bed every day, and he loved having a "bed" that was just his size. And I think our steward loved not having to mess with the rollaway every day. ;)

BTW, this was in a corner cabin, so I don't know how it would work in a standard configuration.

This is a picture of my 10 year old GS on the bunkbed. I am lying on the bed with my foot up to show how high it is. You can see the rail. My DD put her DD2 in one last December. I guess it depends on the child. I have also read about people extending the rail with room service trays wedged between the mattress and railing. Hope this helps.

My son was 2 when we first went, and we booked a room with a bunk, and my husband slept in the bunk, and my son slept in the bed with me. Then we found out they have roll a way beds. I wouldnt book a cabin with the sofa just to have a bed for the little guy. The roll away bed is smaller, about the size of a toddler bed, and my son loved it. I think if your room has the bunk, you might not be able to get the roll away- not sure. My son is now 5, and I still wont let him sleep up there.

When my DD was two, we put her in a crib.... when she was three, we had a rollaway, that they put on the floor - folded the legs so the mattress stayed on the floor.... this worked out wonderfully.

(Can vacation get any better than THIS??)

Wal-mart carries small cots that fold up like folding chairs that would be easy to fit in a suitcase or carry onto a ship. they are perfect for toddlers and low to the ground. On our January sailing we meet a couple who had done this for their 2 year old as he climbs out of cribs.

Another option is to let her sleep in the "big" bed with you. I'm not a fan of my DD co-sleeping with us because she is soooo rough when she sleeps and then doesn't want her own bed, but when we camp or vacation out of town, sometimes it's the only way.
