Money Matters...or so I'm told!!

On the Sensation 5 day cruise we did last month, we brought $250 in cash and only spent $90 of that - this included tip for the porter, room service tips, casino, taxi in Costa Maya, small souvenir purchases, taxi in Cozumel, mini golf in Cozumel, and a tip for the camp carnival counselors. Next time I'm bringing only $100 with me.

My biggest tip would be to bring lots of $1 bills - we brought 40 and used all 40. They come in handy when you're buying inexpensive souvenirs in port, tipping room service, or paying cab fare.

We are a family of 4 too, but our kids are too young to be spending, lol. I am taking a few hundred in travelers checks. Am also taking a couple hundred in cash. I asked the bank for several $1's (come in bundles of 50) and $5's. That way, I can spend the cash and if needed, I can cash a travelers check at the pursers desk. We are splitting what we are taking and DH will carry some, I will carry some. If I do not use the travelers checks, I can deposit them back into my account when I get home. Also like if the checks are lost, I can have them replaced. While I will be bringing my CC, I plan on using it as little as possible while in ports. Not comfortable with using it because of some of the stories I have heard here about fraud.:)

I suppose that's why we use as our primary form of payment and to guarantee our on board purchases a dedicated debit card.

What I did was open a separate account at our bank to which I can transfer funds in as needed. The part I really like is that if I budget X dollars for a cruise I can easily stick to budget and not have to carry anything around with me.

No checks, currency, travelers checks to keep secure.

What a GREAT idea!! I just opened another account with my bank that I will use for my cruise. And also for online purchases where I don't want to use a credit card but am uncomfortable having my "real" checking account info floating around out there!

Thanks for the tip!!
