frisquito Posted January 2, 2009 #1 Share Posted January 2, 2009 Has anyone rented a car in St Thomas and taken the car ferry from Red Hook to Cruz Bay? We were wondering if you have to make reservations for the car ferry or if you can buy tickets at the dock Thanks
richtersl Posted January 2, 2009 #2 Share Posted January 2, 2009 Based on these schedules, it sounds like all you need to do just show up. :) You need to double-check with your car rental agent to make sure that they will allow you to take a rental vehicle to St. John. Not all rental agencies want you to take cars there.
habby Posted January 6, 2009 #3 Share Posted January 6, 2009 We rented a jeep from Budget in 2005 for about $79. I don't know if we were planning on going to St. John when we rented or if they told us we could not go to St. John, but we did. I know we did not make reservations for the ferry ahead of time, we just showed up there. We're spending five days on St. Thomas at the end of the month, renting a car from Avis. I'll try to pay attention when we pick up the car if they say anything about not taking it to St. John on the ferry (although it may be different since we'll have the car for longer than a day). The Islander Posted January 15, 2009 #4 Share Posted January 15, 2009 No reservations for the car barge. You get there, pay a gov't fee at the booth, then get in line with your car, when the barges show up they usually take business/commercial vehicles first (mail, supplies and so on) and then start taking the regular vehicles. You pay for the barge fare once on board; someone comes around and collects and gives a receipt/return ticket. Good idea to get there at least 20 minutes before the departure you want to take. There are three companies however there are times only one is running, if the other two are doing maintainance for example. You might write down the telephone numbers and then call before heading out there to make sure they are all operating. Have a plan B in case only one is running. For the schedule, operators, telephone numbers try http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=virgin+islands+ferry+schedule&fr=yfp-t-305&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8. --Islander
