tequilarat Posted April 21, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 21, 2004 Help, Has anyone seen the horse races on the RCI ships? Am going in June and curious about getting a horse for the race. How much for horse? How big is horse? How do you win? What can you win? Is there a pix somewhere of these horses? Arghh! Capt. Mike Posted April 21, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 21, 2004 You by the pony on the first day at auction. I have seen them go for hundreds of dollars. On the last cruise we bought one for $275.00 I think. The money all goes into a fund and the winning horse on the last day wins it all. I think the jackpot was around 1500. The "owner" of the winning horse get it all. The girl from Denver that beat us out at least bought us a drink!. maryanngup Posted April 21, 2004 #4 Share Posted April 21, 2004 We're just back from the Radiance of the Seas. Our group bought a horse and WON. We were so excited. We paid $225 and won $1116. The "Horse" is on a wooden pole and stand. There's a plastic spaced runner put on the deck. The cruise directer has a cage with three dice which he rolls. The numbers 1 to 6 are the horses and they move with the roll. First one to the finish is the winner. You bid at the beginning of the week and have the rest of the week to decorate your horse. Race is on Friday.
tequilarat Posted April 21, 2004 Author #5 Share Posted April 21, 2004 How do they decorate the horse? Does the horse have shoulders to put a t-shirt on it? Can it wear a hat? Are there any rules to decorating? Arghh! jean-lynd Posted April 21, 2004 #6 Share Posted April 21, 2004 I have seen the horses with sunglasses and hats. I don't think I have seen one with a shirt on yet. Usually they have ribbons and baloons - things like that. They are like a cardboard cut out but I think they are made out of wood. I hope this helps! Capt. Mike Posted April 21, 2004 #7 Share Posted April 21, 2004 We drug our horse around the ship all week. I even have a picture with the Captain meeting "ALPO". If he didn't win he was dogfood, he didn't win! They gave us a bunch of junk to help decorate but you could bring anything you want. iowacruiser Posted April 21, 2004 #8 Share Posted April 21, 2004 The horse race is a calcutta, (you buy the horse at a poolside auction the first day) I picked one up on Vision for $130. I saw people carry theres around all week but ours stayed in his stall (On the balcony) until race day. The cruise staff gives you all kind of stuff to decoratee him with and some people were very creative. You'll also have to have someone in your group serve as the jockey during the race. Most of the jocks were decorated up as well on race day. We finished in a tie for 2ndbut thats where i figured we would run. I named him after a real thoroughbred we own who has had second itis his whole life!! Have fun
Lil Mo Posted April 22, 2004 #9 Share Posted April 22, 2004 You can bet on the horses too without buying one. I bet $6 and ended up winning like $15. Amount you win depends on how many betting and how many betting on the same horse. You place your bets poolside on your seapass but when you win you get back cash. kath816 Posted April 22, 2004 #10 Share Posted April 22, 2004 I was with Granny Mary Ann's group of winners last week. Our horse had "hair" made out of a shiny pom pom such as a cheerleader would use, a feather boa, a silly hat. Others had mini booze bottles hanging off. One guy wrote a whole history of his horse & read it. He also placed it by the entrance to the Windjammer one day. We brought ours to dinner the night before the race and our wonderful waiter put it in the middle of the tabletop! Some people stopped and chatted about it. We also brought it poolside a couple of times. It was fun, especially the winning part!
jburp Posted April 23, 2004 #11 Share Posted April 23, 2004 They did not offer horse racing on our Explorer cruise the week of 04/10. I was so sad, because we enjoy that.
