First time cruiser (this coming August) ...

What does a cabin attendant do?

Waiter/waitress I know ...

Others?

I'll be on the NCL Star heading to Alaska the end of August.

Any help is MOST appreciated!! :)

Kris

Kris, welcome to the great world of cruising!!!

The cabin attendant will make your bed in the morning, and then turn it down at night. (This is always done when you aren't there.) He/She will also vacuum your cabin, clean your bathroom, and replace your towels that you leave on the floor. I know that some people have said that he will also pick up things in your room. We always pick up after ourselves so that he doesn't have to do this.

He will also keep your ice bucket filled, and he brings in information to your cabin, such as the daily newsletter and sales fliers.

I know there are more things, but cannot immediately remember them.

It is wonderful having a cabin steward! They make you feel pampered!

And they bring you towel animals every night!

WOW! Thank you ALL for that info. I'm so excited! I had no idea they did that! I'm not used to being pampered like that! I now understand why we should plan to tip them well.

How much do you typically tip them and do you do it at the beginning of the trip, during the trip, or at the end? I'm clueless!!

I don't want to seem rude but where on earth do you get your facts. I happen to work with a guy who used to work on a ship. He was making roughly 25 dollars an hour for 60 hour weeks. his off time he got free food on the ships, free place to sleep, and got to see the world. I really don't believe they only make 50 a month sorry

Hello,

The cruise lines pay their waiters and cabin stewards a basic amount which is $50 a month, and the gratuities make up most of their income. And some do very well especially compared to incomes in their home countries.

Even after 26 cruises I always tip more than the cruise line recommended amount. However, if I were a first time cruiser I would tip the recommended only, because on a first cruise you really cannot tell the difference between superior service and the routine.

Please ask him what type of ship, where it was registered, what his position on ship was and whether he was union. Then, please let all of us know. You might want to do it quickly, before the flames start (although here on the "first time cruisers" board you are likely to get some slack.

Why doesn't the person talking about obscenely low pay have to post the same information? If someone says they get paid $50 a month, I would like to know where that information came from. I have seen a wide range of salaries posted; almost none of them say where the numbers came from.

This site has salary ranges for different positions on cruise ships. http://www.cruiseshipjob.com/position.htm

It says waiters get $900-$1300 per month depending on tips. It seems kind of low to me but not as bad as $50 per month or as good as $25 an hour. Cabin stewards get $1800-$2200. These wages include tips.

I'm absorbed in these boards! Anyone else?! I finally had to search old threads to see what I've been missing on my 12-hour break! :-)

My screenname isn't that creative - my dog, Zoey, didn't make the cut. :-) Acutally, I just adore tulips and my passion in life is cooking - so - tulips*n*truffles!

I feel like I've found the perfect vacation to SAVE money. I'm not a drinker at all, I have no problem blowing $10 in the casino and being done with it, I'd rather sleep than spa, and a sunset at sea is worth more money than anything I could purchase! Excursions are another story. I'm still researching the best value for the money. I'm definitely not in the helicopter/airplane tour crowd - I just don't have that much money saved - even though it would be incredible. But a guided tour or train - awesome!

Speaking of excursions. I wrote down some prices early this week and checked them again today and they went up. Not much, but like $10-15 per person. Is that pretty normal? Will they just keep going up?

You guys are awesome! Thanks so much for the help and advice!!!

Natalie
