colleenmf Posted November 16, 2004 #2 Share Posted November 16, 2004 We're visiting Progreso on Voyager. Is it REALLY worth 4 1/2 hours on a bus to visit Chichen Itza? How much are you into history, culture, archaeology? Are there other Mayan tours available? Tilum is closer but not as interesting? I think it might be 4 1/2 hours EACH WAY to Chitzen Itza. I did it from Cancun once during a week's vacation. It was worth it but I had a whole week at Cancum and I went on the equinox when the shadows cast a snake down the pyramid. Gr8Mariner Posted November 19, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted November 19, 2004 The RSSC website says that it is 2 1/4 hours each way. We've done other ruins, but everyone seems to think that this is the best. I talked to someone at RSSC who said that other employees have said that it was the highlight of their trip...so I guess I'll just pack a pillow. Daw6id Posted November 19, 2004 #4 Share Posted November 19, 2004 Chichen Itza is the premier Mayan site - Uxmal is better, but smaller and harder to get to - Chichen Itza is huge. The history there is incredible, and the horror of Spaniards destroying a library of 250,000 volumes because it was heresy, without being able to read it, sends shivers up my spine. To appreciate the Yucatan for what it was (and is), bring a pillow!
