Passport Cards

Sorry but the WHTI final rule does not apply where I work. All of the info we have at our Port of entry is for land border crossing. What we have for sea travel is only for Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence river and Lake Champlain. Travel on those bodies of water by boat. We see small cruise ships coming from Montreal and all people must have Passports as of June 1, 2009, I know that for sure since we have had that stamped on our heads by our Supervisors.

Still, like most others say. Get a passport flying back home on an emergency will require one.

Key phrase is coming from Montreal. The closed loop cruise thing is for US citizens leaving and returning to the same US port. So, if the cruise is orginating from Canada, then of course it would not qualify for the closed loop exception. Also, you might want to ask your supervisor, if all those Canadains on that cruise can use a frequent travellers card(they can).

Canadian citizens can present a valid passport or a valid frequent traveler program card (FAST or NEXUS).

To the Op,

I have a Passport Card and used it on our last cruise. We had NO problems with it. The lady checking us in had not seen one before, so she called over a Supervisor and within minutes we were checked in.

If you want to get one, get one.

But what would be the point? He said he didn't want to get passports because of his budget but your telling him to spend $45 times however many he needs for documentation that is no better than what he already has.
