southern cruising couple Posted February 24, 2009 #1 Share Posted February 24, 2009 I am thinking of taking a water taxi from the port to Caye Caulker...looks like a 45 boat ride for $30 round trip per person. The spending the day on this little quaint island by renting a golf cart for half a day. This sounds fun and a unique way to explore what seems to be a cute and pretty island. Instead of spending the time snorkeling I would rather see the area... Has anyone ever done this? If so, where did you go that stands out and did you rent a golf cart? Are the places to rent the golf carts easy to find?
Lisa0719 Posted February 24, 2009 #2 Share Posted February 24, 2009 I did it back in 2004 or 2005 so not sure if anything has changed. It was fine. We walked to the left (if facing land, not water). It reminded me of an old 1950's movie bus station. We were on the water taxi (8 of us) with a bunch of locals, lumber, baskets, supplies, etc. Got to taxi pier and walked the main street (dirt) ---- I do want to warn you my two sons, 15 & 17, were offered drugs to buy. We parked ourselves at the bar at the end of the island (called the split). Had a wonderful day swimming and drinking with the locals. Took the water taxi back which was an adventure as some weather had moved in. We were asked to hold a tarp over our heads. Quite comical.
