KroozFoolz Posted February 26, 2009 #3 Share Posted February 26, 2009 It took about eight hours, I believe. I think it is about 90 miles. Lots of twists and turns. http://www.zydecocruiser.com/ncl_sun_2006/NewOrleans/nola_to_gulf.htm

I guess the casino doesn't open until after midnight? or the shops on the ship? or no liquor tasting the first night?
GORDONCHICK Posted February 26, 2009 #5 Share Posted February 26, 2009 The casino on the Spirit opened about 6:30pm the evening we left. You really want to be out on deck for shove away - because the ships are usually docked with the bow pointed up stream but very close to a bridge that they cannot clear, so they do this huge and fast port turn. And the channel must be pretty tight because the ships take some pretty fast and sharp turns as they head down river.

We're going in the summer so will have more daylight to see everything. Sounds like it's a big added bonus to this cruise.
KroozFoolz Posted February 26, 2009 #7 Share Posted February 26, 2009 I guess the casino doesn't open until after midnight? or the shops on the ship? or no liquor tasting the first night? from Capers - casino opens at 4:30 pm (approx) shops open at 6:30 pm (with free liquor tasting ;)) Members of the ship's orchestra play Dixieland Jazz at the 21st Century Bar on Promemade Deck that first evening (7:45 - 8:30) as you are cruising down the Mississippi. Thanks, that's great to hear. I thought maybe it would be delayed because of the international waters thing.

Gambling is legal in Louisiana so the casino generally opens as soon as the ship leaves the dock. The trip downriver is an experience itself and during the summer, you should have a couple of hours of daylight after leaving the dock to see the sights. As the old Beatles song says..."It's a long and winding road":D The trip back is good also. You will begin seeing the deepwater offshore rigs a couple of hundred miles before you enter the mouth of the river. This should be right at twilight so you will get to see them lit up like the mini-cities that they are. I am fortunate in that I have been on both sides of that picture.
