magbol99 Posted March 10, 2009 #1 Share Posted March 10, 2009 What are the best beer choices in town. We are pretty easy pleased (not too picky) Bud Light fans and want to find a Mexican beer that is similar. I think we drank Sol or Pacifico and maybe another that our server recommended. I am sure we will sample several but thought it would be fun for a little input.
blue water dude Posted March 11, 2009 #2 Share Posted March 11, 2009 Two main beer distributors in Mahahual area. Superior, which produces Dos Equise, Sol, Superior, Tacata and a few others that are regional? Corona is the other and they produce Corona, Pacifico, Montejo, Modelo and also a few other regionals. If you like Corona in the states, or beer with a "skunky" flavor, like Miller High Life, go for the Sol. The Corona brewed in Mexico is much better than that brewed in the US, (it is brewed by Bud in the US), much less Skunky. A bit less than the Sol. Superior and Montejo are the closest to most US lagers. Pacifico is the lightest of the popular beers you'll likely find. Very good in Chaladas and I recommend you have a few. They salt the rim of a glass, add ice and one lime juice and fill the rest of the way with beer. Very good with the lighter beer like Pacifico. The only ale you will find will be the Dos Equis Amber. Very good beer but not sold in too many places. A few places are selling Corona light or Modelo light but not much light. You're on vacation! If you stop in Belize, try a Belikins Stout. Belize is an old English colony so they still drink stout beer and Belikins is one of the best. Salud!
leprechaun2 Posted March 14, 2009 #3 Share Posted March 14, 2009 What about drinks made with ice? If you don't drink the water, why the ice? Would love to try that Chalada, but concerned about the ice cubes.
blue water dude Posted March 15, 2009 #4 Share Posted March 15, 2009 Don't know anyone who does not use ice made with purified water, and this would be very true of the places along the ocean front. A good rule is to see if the ice is in some form of cube, or just broken chunks. If you find any bad ice, it would be in broken pieces as if it were broken from a large block. You will likely not find any, so go and enjoy the chalada. There is also a michalada. A bit more salt and some sort of salsa/worchesetershire sauce. I think they are nasty but some like them and they are popular down there. The big concern regarding getting sick is not ice, it is poorly cleaned and stored fish or just a poorly run kitchen. Just look at the dining area and bathrooms and if they are clean, the chances are you will be fine. Most places on the ocean front are very clean though and you will likely enjoy, so go into the town. It is a hoot
