AdoptAtty Posted March 19, 2009 #5 Share Posted March 19, 2009 mind sharing upsell from what kind of cabin(s) to the GV? mind sharing for how much or what kind of discount you were given (when you look at the full cost to outright book a GV vs. what you will end up paying in total)? Happy Sailing!!!

SeattleMother Posted March 19, 2009 Author #9 Share Posted March 19, 2009 We had an AB and the connecting AF. Family of 6. I ended up paying about 55% of what the GV is going for now, but it has come down quite a bit in the last few months from what they were originally asking. We get to keep all of our onboard credit. It's for our Repositioning Alaska cruise on the Star on April 25th. I'm SO excited! 6 bottles of liquor and only 2 of us over 21... I guess we don't have to worry about which of us can and can't go to Cagney's for breakfast and lunch and whether we should all get in the suite line at embarkation. Our old AB showed up as available right away, but the AF didn't. Maybe they oversold them?

Brennbob Posted March 19, 2009 #12 Share Posted March 19, 2009 Congrats..if you don't mind me asking when are you sailing? I am hoping to get an upsell call and am sailing on April 11th, I was just wondering if they will start calling this early for April cruises.:)
Kagehitokiri Posted March 19, 2009 #13 Share Posted March 19, 2009 We had an AB and the connecting AF. Family of 6. I ended up paying about 55% of what the GV is going for now, but it has come down quite a bit in the last few months from what they were originally asking. (base fares >) its $1715/nt right now. (IIRC pearl's is from $2300/nt in alaska.) do you remember what it was originally? 55% of $1715/nt = $945/nt AB = $485/nt AF = $460/nt ? btw is it possible to book, check for upsell, and cancel if not? or something along those lines.. or do you have to be targeted? Firemaker Posted March 19, 2009 #14 Share Posted March 19, 2009 Our old AB showed up as available right away, but the AF didn't. Maybe they oversold them? Congrats! We are on the same cruise as you and we are in an AF. None available as of today...we agree that they may be oversold, so we hope to get a call too, but not holding our breath...we'd take your AB in a heartbeat! WineGal09 Posted March 20, 2009 #16 Share Posted March 20, 2009 ENJOY- My dad surprised us (My mom, sister, sister's boyfriend, myself and my fiance) with the upgrade to the Garden Villa on the Star 2 years ago- BEST TRIP OF MY LIFE! It was my fiance's first cruise and we are now planning our honeymoon cruise for october on the pearl and we are getting the romance suite because it had the extra perks which we felt we couldn't live without after being the GV. It is an amazing room and you won't believe it until you see it! Enjoy!!! (i am secretly jealous! haha)

I'm not sure I understand this question ...? I can tell you, though, that upsell fairies call well past final payment time. So if you booked something after then, and cancel, you lose full payment. You can't really check for an upsell--you're either called by the Upsell Fairy or not. No one really knows who is targeted or why.

NoPiratesPlease Posted March 20, 2009 #19 Share Posted March 20, 2009 Seattlemother: Congrats! 14500 is a wonderful suite--that and it's mate on the Dawn are, in our opinion, the two nicest suites on NCL--a shade nicer than the GVs on the Jewel and Jade, and MUCH nicer than the GVs on the Pearl and Gem! Be sure to use your butler for your needs but be sure to treat him well! If it's John D'Souza or Roland, know that you've got one of NCL's best butlers ever. And, the regular Concierge is Simone Weigel--one of our two ABSOLUTE favs (the other is Ruthie Haggar). Treat Simone well and you won't regret it! If Alex Forbes is sub-ing for her, you'll be just as happy--I don't know who the other alternate is for Simone. You should have dinner in the cabin or better, at the picnic table! You can have lunch at the picnic table while at sea-it's great! Here's a trick we like, since we travel with at least 5. The Dawn/Star ships have two MBRs, one in the front and one near the Garden. We always take that back one--it's more private, has a sliding door to the garden, and more closet space. The bedroom itself is a little smaller, and the bathroom, while just as roomy and well-equipped isn't as spectacular looking, but we prefer it. BTW, you MUST use the wood blinds in the bathroom at night, especially in the front bath--unless you like giving everyone at the pool a great show! And please be gentle on it! We're going to be in it in August!
WineGal09 Posted March 20, 2009 #20 Share Posted March 20, 2009 Did he actually surprise all of you? If so, can you tell me how he pulled it off? I'm working on a surprise of my own! Yes she did actually surprise all of us... We got to the port to check in- we thought we had 3 staterooms (one for the parents, one for the girls and one for the boys- my dad's a bit old fashioned! haha). He made sure none of us were with him when he checked in, and then we were ushered to the VIP waiting room, we were all a little confused and he had this weird grin on his face but didn't say a word. Within the next 20 minutes our butler came and met us and escorted us to our "rooms".... we were all in shock- couldn't believe what we had just walked into, needless to say it was a great night/trip! let me know if you have anymore questions, or specifics, I can ask my dad to post a reply to this or I will call him for more details! Good Luck
Rare mooline Posted March 21, 2009 #21 Share Posted March 21, 2009 Cool news!! As my pal AdoptAtty knows, we are "slumming" in 14000 on the Star to Alaska in June. :) I'm curious, though about the OBC -we originally had 2 suites booked, an AA and an AC; I decided to bite the bullet and pay the extra for the GV. However, before I did, my TA specifically inquired about the shipboard credits we had for the suites; $500 each. NCL said no, you lose one of the credits because the GV is one cabin. It now seems odd that they would not allow a full fare passenger to keep the 2 credits, but they would allow it on an upsell. Of course, I made the decision to upgrade at full fare knowing and understanding their rules. I do wonder, though if I ought to go back and ask again (and I know I have to go through the TA). I's kinda important now becuase one of us just got laid off. :( I even looked at the insurance policy (new one as of 3/1) and have confirmed that we can cancel with no penalty because of the layoff...but....but...but....it's a GV...it's once in a lifetime....and we have other family members coming along....and its a celebration and 2 anniversaries and a graduation. Sure would help if they'd be nice and reconsider that OBC...do any of you think it's worth a shot? (and sincere apologies if this is hijacking a post - someone please tell me if I broke the rules?? Not intentional...honest!)
BarbCT605 Posted March 21, 2009 #22 Share Posted March 21, 2009 You could always ask -- the worst that could happen is that NCL could say 'no' (which they will). Rationale: The GV is one cabin. 3rd-6th/7th pax do not pay full fare. I'm sorry about the layoff.:( P.S. I wouldn't cancel the GV either. Good choice. AdoptAtty Posted March 21, 2009 #23 Share Posted March 21, 2009 WineGal - will you ask Dad what he did about your luggage tags? We all have the preprinted tags for the "original" cabins... I downloaded new ones, but am trying to figure out how to do the ole switcharoo. My family doesn't know one cabin from another, except the DH now knows what an Owner's Suite is from our last cruise, and I suppose they aren't dumb... they understand inside vs. oceanview vs. balcony... but I'm thinking none of the rest of them know one suite from another! Mooline - CALL! I was always afraid to call, and when I started booking this cruise some friendly folks from the CC Board encouraged me to call back... twice in fact... and instead of $200 OBC, we went to $300 and then $500. I've never had a rude NCL agenct on the phone... of course I'm not saying they aren't out there. But really, if you think about it, what is the worse thing that happens, they say "no," and maybe your feelings are hurt a tiny bit. Oh, and not to change the topic... but Mooline, here is a link I found useful with copies of some menu's... thought you might be interested NCL Menus pictures from cruises photos on webshots
tdcjerry Posted March 21, 2009 #24 Share Posted March 21, 2009 Keep the pressure on NCL to give you your OBC, we did the same thing when we took an upsell to the GV, after a few calls we still had our OBCs, we had certs. in the GV on sailing day. AdoptAtty Posted March 21, 2009 #25 Share Posted March 21, 2009 You could always ask -- the worst that could happen is that NCL could say 'no' (which they will) I think it depends who you talk to. PCC said no, her supervisor said no, and the upgrade people said yes.
