Family of 14 Posted April 29, 2004 Author #4 Share Posted April 29, 2004 There are just so many things you can carry on. Everything is valuable to me! I carry my camera, jewelry and computer, but the sound machine, hair dryer and curlers have to go in the suitcase. I would be lost without the last three as well. Also, I often have brand new clothes in my hanging bag. Just where do these thieves stash the goods and how do they get away with it when other baggage handlers are around? <MARQUEE>Are you sailing on the Mariner 7/18/04?...Click here! or HERE! </MARQUEE> Disney Wonder 3/2000 ~ Disney Magic 9/2000 ~ RCI Vision 2/2001 ~ Carnival Victory 12/2001 ~ Celebrity Millennium 3/2003 ~ RCI Adventure OTS 9/2003 ~ RCI Mariner OTS 7/18/2004 ~ RCI Serenade OTS 9/26/2004
Catnip Posted April 29, 2004 #5 Share Posted April 29, 2004 I knew it, I knew it! Yeah, those feds are here to protect me, right?! HA! I know that any employee from any organization can steal, but, come on folks, we are making it like a piece of cake for them...........leaving our suitcases unlocked with a sign saying "come & steal me!" You can only carry on so much stuff in your carry-on luggage..and like family of 14 said, ALL my stuff is valuable to me! And the next thing that will happen is something will be put IN someone's luggage and Big Brother will come looking for owner of the case. Look out! Rare TPKeller Posted April 29, 2004 #6 Share Posted April 29, 2004 Wow, I can't imagine putting a laptop computer in checked luggage. I had mine broken in the carry-on when I had to take a puddle jumper from LAX to SAN, and they refused me boarding with my carry on. They had to have literally thrown the bag and it broke the CD drive on my computer. I haven't heard of anyone being framed with any illicit substance as a result of the no lock policy, but I bet a good lawyer would love to get ahold of that. It's a wonder drug smugglers aren't already doing it, with that defense in mind. How do you prove it was theirs? Clearly there are questionable characters in the employ of the TSA doing the screening! want2seaitall Posted April 29, 2004 #7 Share Posted April 29, 2004 Wow I'm too trusting I guess...we just put my son's labtop in our checked luggage getting off the ship last week. I never even gave theft a thought. I'm still one of those fools that never locks their doors at home...only at night while I'm in bed....I'm not that foolish...lol. What a shame! Driftwoodgal Posted April 29, 2004 #8 Share Posted April 29, 2004 I haven't had the luxury of being able to flw a bunch before 9/11. I have a question for those that have. Did the little locks on your suitcase really stop someone from getting into the suitcase if they really wanted to? I would think the only good lock would be a combination lock or good ole duck tape FO14, Was this just in Detroit, or have you heard about this happening all over? I would think that there are bad apples in every industry. God bless you and yours.

Mark_K Posted April 29, 2004 #12 Share Posted April 29, 2004 Driftwoodgal, Two guys were walking in the woods and noticed a bear running towards them. One guy reached into his backpack, pulled out some running shoes and quickly changed into them. The other guy said, "That's stupid, you can't outrun a bear no matter what shoes you wear". To which the first guy replied, "I don't have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you". The idea's not that you can make it impossible to break into, it's to make it enough harder that they'll skip yours and go to someone else's. ---------------------------------------------------------- "Nothing so needs reforming as other people's habits" Mark Twain "Nothing so needs reforming as other people's formal night attire, poolside attire, child rearing practices, walk-talkie usage, chair hogging, seat saving, line cutting ..." KStevens79 Posted April 29, 2004 #13 Share Posted April 29, 2004 Why would anyone leave their suitcases unlocked? I ALWAYS lock mine!! I have flown 4 times in the past 2 months. My luggage was hand checked in the terminal and then I was allowed to put the locks on. No, I don't think the locks keep people out of my luggage; after all, most people have cloth luggage and those are easy to cut open. But the locks do keep the zippers from coming unzipped. I can't imagine anyone putting their valuables in a suitcase. KStevens79 Posted April 29, 2004 #15 Share Posted April 29, 2004 Actually they make you stay until your bags have been cleared. I have been in airports where they just x-ray them, where each bag is gone through by hand (I was NOT happy), and where they checked for explosives. But never have I been told to leave before my luggage was cleared. I have also been in airports where you had to remove your shoes at security and run them through the x-ray machines, and airports where you don't. Sure would be nice if ALL airports had the same policy! cruisinMike Posted April 30, 2004 #16 Share Posted April 30, 2004 I just returned from my Hawaii cruise 2 days ago. There are signs in most airports, including Detroit and San Diego to leave luggage unlocked or the locks will be broken. Please don't suggest to anyone that they need to put on locks. Yes there are some airports like Toledo where you stay with your luggage while it is checked before you leave it, but not all airports are like this. dougp26364 Posted April 30, 2004 #18 Share Posted April 30, 2004 First, there are airports where you can't stay with your luggage until it's checked. At those airports, if you lock it, they will break it. I've seen more than one or two people upset because their cases wouldn't close after the TSA had to break into them. Scream and yell as they might, their suitcases were ruined and no one was going to pay them for it. I have flown from several airports where you can stay with your luggage and lock it after it's been checked. It's nice in that you can watch them check or X-ray your bag, then lock it. It's inconvenient in that you have to stand in one more line waiting for them to check you baggage. In Fresno, CA, they had to hand check every piece of checked baggage. Thank goodness most of the planes flying out of their were the 50 seat regional jets. Otherwise it would have taken forever to get through check in and THEN have to go through the security screens with your carry on, then random checks before getting on the plane. Fresno was a major PIA to fly out of. Second, I would never put valuables in checked luggage. Especially something like a laptop that could be damaged by the rough handeling they give luggage. I swear they have contests to see how many pieces they can damage in a day. Most laptop will fit in a small case that can go under the seat in front of you. That's how I carry mine. I also have a small back pack case that can fit my laptop and one change of clothes if I'm flying the puddle jumpers. Again, this can fit under the seat in front of me. I have had them question if it would fit or not but once they saw that it did, there was no problems. superjerryw Posted April 30, 2004 #21 Share Posted April 30, 2004 What I find more amazing than the fact that the thefts occured is the number of people who seem to think nothing of leaving their valuables in their suitcase. I would have thought that most people would have the common sense not to do that. Theft notwithstanding, I would never leave a camera or a laptop in a suitcase since I would be afraid it would get broken. I guess some people just don't care what happens to their stuff. Donuts, is there anything they can't do....
Mark_K Posted April 30, 2004 #22 Share Posted April 30, 2004 TPKeller, Locked or not locked, the excuse that somebody else must have put it there has been tried for years by people caught with drugs in their luggage. It works about as well as the shoplifting excuse of "I don't know how it got there, it must have fallen into my purse". ---------------------------------------------------------- "Nothing so needs reforming as other people's habits" Mark Twain "Nothing so needs reforming as other people's formal night attire, poolside attire, child rearing practices, walk-talkie usage, chair hogging, seat saving, line cutting ..." want2seaitall Posted April 30, 2004 #23 Share Posted April 30, 2004 I know right on SWA's website...it says NOT to lock your luggage...they will break the locks!!! We've used zip ties in the past...and have found them cut off on one of our suitcases...the contents were all disturbed. They pick things at random to search...if you lock it...they WILL break the locks.
