Piano Bars - All Smoking?

John&John

Recommended Posts

I know. I should have asked. Does anyone know if there is a bar or lounge that is non-smoking? We planned this trip for our two daughters' birthday(born same date, four years apart) and one has asthma. They've been looking forward to live music and dancing. Can anyone give me some information, please? How about the restaurant on the Lido deck?

About a dozen posts up from your's . . .

all lounges are non smoking with the exception of the sports bar, cigar bar and the piano bar.

this leave the disco, wine bar, lobby bar, karaoke, and the band lounges along with the main show room.

All the piano bars I've been in have permitted smoking. Some had smoking sections' date=' some didn't.

There are plenty of lounges onboard where smoking is not permitted...no need to mess with the piano bar or any other smoking venue.

No, there is no need for smoking/nonsmoking alternating......[/quote']

Nope......if you like a piano lounge and can't stand the smoke you just don't deserve to be there. Only smokers deserve to use the Piano Lounge.

John Heald has a response to a question on his blog today about the piano bar on the Splendor being non-smoking. He stated that he went to a non-smoking policy when he was CD because of the large number of non-smokers who wanted to go to the piano bar and the non-smoking policy has remained. It's not fleetwide - just Splendor.

nola's right about splendor piano bar...

and as per nybumpkin's comments - here's what he's referencing:

'Welcome back from what must have been a fantastic voyage and I am so sorry about the concerns you encountered with the smoking policy at the piano bar. When I left the Carnival Splendor in October the piano bar was a non-smoking area. I tried this because of the numerous amount of negative comments I received from people who did not smoke yet wanted to experience our iconic piano entertainers. So, I made this area non smoking along with the support of the Hotel Director Duncan. We did this also in the knowledge that smokers could smoke just one deck down in the cigar bar called Robusto’s.

We monitored the attendance of these venues and also looked at the number of comments we received from smokers and neither changed very much at all. However…………..I can imagine how frustrating it must have been for you to receive misleading information and for that there is no excuse ……….just apologies. I checked with the vessel and the piano bar on the Carnival Splendor remains non smoking and this is not a fleetwide policy but is one that continues on the Carnival Splendor.'

That's your opinion, G'Ma. I think that alternating is a GREAT idea.

i agree with g'ma. i don't like the idea of alternating nights. there are limited smoking venues on cruises. alternating even those seems like a bit much.

i would also interject that per my obeservation, those limited venues available for smoking, also seem to correspond to those areas which have a higher than typical volume for alcohol sales. people who don't even often smoke, while drinking, are more inclined to - especially while on vacation and free of inhibitions. piano bar, sports bar, disco, casino. but even in the casino, most of the bar (save 5 seats or so) are smoke free...

i've also noticed karaoke, the main shows, atrium, dining rooms, promenade, etc. are all smoke free so it's not as if there's a lack of alternate options...

the vast majority of the ship is non-smoking. if you'd like to alternate days on the vast majority of the ship, then maybe it'd be an equitable trade. but otherwise, what more can really be expected... there's a reason the smoke-free paradise was a flop.

from wikipedia (and granted, not cited, but i believe it to be true):

'Non-smoking rules were strictly enforced. No smoking materials of any kind were permitted aboard. If anything was seen or found, the passenger was fined $250 and put off at the next port (transportation home to be provided at passenger's own expense). Due to poor revenue, Carnival decided to discontinue the smoke-free ship in December 2003 because non-smokers tend to not drink or gamble as much as those accustomed to smoke'

i think people in the piano bar, especially if they're really into it, are likely to buy a heck of a lot more drinks than those at afternoon tea (non-smoking, btw) as an example...

And for people who don't smoke, don't like the smell, have asthma, etc...they shouldn't be allowed to enjoy the piano bar at all? I didn't say make the entire venue smoke-free..I said make a few nights non-smoking so that it can be enjoyed by both.

I don't agree with you or G'ma.

Smokers and non-smokers should be able to enjoy all the venues on the ship. I can't tolerate smoke and don't get to enjoy the piano bar. Although, I hear some of the piano bar entertainers are really bad - maybe we're not missing much.

The how's and why's are not up to us.

That sounds very reasonable. Then on the alternating nights we should be allowed to smoke in the Dining Room & the Show Lounge. There is usually ample time to light up between courses and in the Show lounge there are already tables for the ash trays.

You best stay out of California as I don't think you can smoke anywhere in the state (not even in your own apartment)!

The things we all take for granted.

No one smokes in theatres or restaurants anymore. There are even municipalities where smoking in bars is also off limits.

I smoked for many years and I never thought I would quit smoking because I liked it so much!

I quit and now I don't like it so much. Whatever!

It's interesting how one's opinion changes when he crosses the fence!

That's not true about California. We just returned from California, stayed in very nice 4 star hotel, Doubletree and we were given a smoking room. My Dh smokes.

unless it has changed recently, when i was on the Spirit, the piano bar was non-smoking, don't know about the other Spirit class ships, or if it has changed since i was there. but there was never anyone in the bar, maybe about 6 people a night?!!

Your argument lacks logic though. Smoking is not allowed in the dining areas because everyone eats, every night. Smoking is not allowed in the show rooms because everyone wants to be able to see the shows because they are different every night and are usually only performed once on the cruise. Alternating smoking nights in the other bars and even the casino is more fair because what happens in those areas doesn't change much from night to night so splitting up the nights is fair to both smokers and non-smokers. Also, there should be areas (as most ships have) that are always designated smoking and other areas designated non-smoking that are not entertainment or food related. That seems fair to me.

Glad you understand that only smokers have rights and they just let the rest of us live in their world:D

Fair does nothing to get rid of the smoke and the stink.

The nasty smell gets into your clothing, yuck:mad:

You misunderstood me. I agree with you and I'd be ecstatic if smoking was banned everywhere but I'm just being realistic.

I was joking about staying out of CA but I did remember reading an article a while ago where a municipality did ban smoking in apartments and condos somewhere in CA - even in your own unit. I feel that this is too much, though.

We've sailed on Disney and they do not allow smoking in any of the bars or lounges or night clubs. I think you can smoke on your balcony and in a certain area of one of the decks. I know that they are much pricier than Carnival, but if you really want to be able to go to the piano bar and you have asthma, they are really great. It really is nice to be able to enjoy going to bars and night clubs in a smoke-free environment.

Just off the Freedom. Tried to go into the Piano bar twice......the smoke chased us out. Hey, Carnival....wake up, stop smoking altogether on the ship, or invest in some better exhaust systems, especially in the little areas like the disco and piano bar. For that matter, just walking past the casino was gagging. We could never walk by the port side of the lido deck either with all the smoke killing the fresh sea air!
