Rare Tgianco Posted April 29, 2009 #201 Share Posted April 29, 2009 Guys, please, we get enough of In & Out here in San Diego, Wendy lives for that burger and fries, I would like to know of a nice Steak House nearby in San Fran. Fred Well, there's the Acme Chophouse, located at AT&T Park (Willie Mays Plaza at 3rd St.), and I've always liked the food, drinks and scenery at Momo's, right across the street from the ballpark. That place will be lively on a Friday night before the game. I would grab a spot there early. Legendary restaurants include: House of Prime Rib Masa's Zuni Cafe Aqua Boulevard Gary Danko Michael Mina Joe Dimaggio's Italian Chophouse The Carnelian Room Get a drink at The Top of the Mark. Rare Tgianco Posted April 29, 2009 #204 Share Posted April 29, 2009 How far is Chinatown from where the ships dock? Is it walkable or can you easily get a bus there? Geographically, SF is a very small town. I don't know that you could walk it, but you can get there easily by cab. Get a couple of fellow passengers that want to go to Chinatown, and it won't cost a thing. Maybe Carnival will offer a couple of buses to different parts of town... doubt it, but thought I'd throw that out there.
kyrisong1 Posted April 29, 2009 #205 Share Posted April 29, 2009 I said there is no antibiotics to treat the flu since it's a viral infection, excuse me for not putting the label of antiviral on tamiflu, I did say Tamiflu is a treatment...... don't you jump down my throat, reread what I said. I am an RN and used to work an infectious disease floor and I know the difference between virus and antibiotics, I was pointing out cipro and zpack are NOT treatments for the flu. Ok I went back over my wording what I should have said was: Tamiflu is an antiviral that is known to treat flu, it does not cure flu. It is known to help prevent it if you have been exposed and you take it in the first 48 hours. It will shorten the symptoms of the flu by 1.3 days. It's expensive and I'm thinking like Cipro with the anthrax scare, it will start to become scarce because people will try stockpiling. Hope this doesn't happen but it's human nature. When I get the flu I don't take Tamiflu because it's expensive and it only shortens it 1.3 days average..........<shrug> to each their own. Brangwen Posted April 29, 2009 #209 Share Posted April 29, 2009 Fred, There are twi Hard Rock's in San Fran. One is at Pier 39 the other is on Van Ness, both are cool. I'm not sure about a steak house but The Crab House is home of the World Famous "Killer Crab" (Whole Crab roasted in a secret garlic sauce). Located on Pier 39, the Crab House offers stunning views of the bay, the Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman's Wharf. I'm sure they also have steak!! Hey if you see Meredith, Matt and little Ryan (with Randy's CC group) please tell them that Kat said hello and I hope they are having a great time even with all the changes. They need to call me from SF!!! Hi Kat! We're having a good time too... it's fine... gonna miss seeing a beach and sand, but most people are taking it well. :D
NeurosurgeryNP Posted April 29, 2009 #210 Share Posted April 29, 2009 I have been on cruises where ports were cancelled due to weather. Bummer - but safe in the long run. As medical professional, I would be grateful if I was on that cruise that we were not being put in harms way in the form of a stop in Mexico - even if I didn't get off at port, people coming back on the ship would potentially be bringing back the infection and spreading it to us. The strain in Mexico seems to be much more virulent(over 150 deaths in Mexico so far) that what has been surfacing in the US. I know that being held "hostage" on the ship is no fun, but in the long run, I think that the cruise lines are looking out in the passengers best interest and in turn to national interest - potentially exposed cruisers are not bringing it back to their homeports and infecting others in the US. I live on Long Island and near NyC where there was a big cluster of swine flu. Several kids went on spring break to Mexico and brought it back to their families, and ultimatey their schools. Just my 2 cents.
caribbean dreams Posted April 29, 2009 #211 Share Posted April 29, 2009 BUS???? How about a nice streetcar! (except I don't know where the ship docks). You can walk to the streetcar depot from pier 39 or fishermans wharf, just a few blocks up the street.
suziehmkr Posted April 29, 2009 #212 Share Posted April 29, 2009 We were there in August and had jackets and still were cold. Especially near or on the water. But its a very neat city. We took a city tour on a trolley vehicle and really enjoyed it. That's because we save all of our good weather for September after all of the summer tourists go home. ;) :) All kidding aside - I cannot for the life of me figure out why they would head up to San Francisco instead of keeping down south with a CTN..... or even Catalina. There must be some reason, but I just don't know what it could be. I am glad that so many of you are keeping a positive attitude thru all of this! I can't imagine being stuck on a ship with a bunch of grumpy people. I know it was hard enough when they cancelled Kona on us, but it wasn't nearly as controversial as this is. TheStrobelFamily Posted April 29, 2009 #214 Share Posted April 29, 2009 I know Carnival will have a press release later today, but wondering what other options Carnival might have for the Splendor.....I am supposed to be cruising May 24th and doubt this swine flu will blow over in a few weeks. I live in SoCal so definitely am not up for a San Diego, Catalina Island trip and not sure if a SF, Seattle, Victoria, BC trip is appealing. Could they do Hawaii and get around the International port requirement?

trvlqueen Posted April 29, 2009 #216 Share Posted April 29, 2009 IDK what time you actually dock in SF, but if you have time, a great side trip might be heading up to Napa Valley. If you could grab lunch at the Culinary Institute of America, you'd be in for a real treat. Not sure what their weekday hours of service are, but we had a meal there a couple years ago that still brings back awesome memories! Plus, if you get a group together, rent a limo and have until 10pm (it's about an hour-an hour and a half away), you could have some fun winery-hopping. I love SF ... we've looked at doing a repo cruise in order to see her from a ship before, but it just never worked out. I know if you're looking for tropical sunshine, SF doesn't compare to the Mexican Riv, but still is an awesome place to visit. Love your attitude, Fred ... have a wonderful trip and keep those posts coming! :)

cathyz Posted April 29, 2009 #221 Share Posted April 29, 2009 Here are some pics of the Splendor last time she was in SF (they're right after the Spirit dry dock pics). The very last pic is taken from the walking bridge across the embarcadero from the Pier 39 parking garage to Pier 39, so if she parks in the same place, when you exit the ship building, you'd turn right on the street to get to Pier 39 and the Hard Rock Cafe is the first building on your right as you enter Pier 39, we ate lunch there the day we were there. http://travel.webshots.com/album/570623227xTrNnb

framerman Posted April 29, 2009 #223 Share Posted April 29, 2009 May be a dumb question but what exactly is a repo cruise:confused: it stands for repositioning. As when ships move from one venue(carribean) to another(ie Alaska)
cathyz Posted April 29, 2009 #224 Share Posted April 29, 2009 May be a dumb question but what exactly is a repo cruise:confused: It's a repositioning cruise for the ships that do different itineraries during the year, for example, some do MR during the winter and Alaska during the summer, so they have one-way 'repositioning cruises' to move the ship. cathyz Posted April 29, 2009 #225 Share Posted April 29, 2009 Day 4, Wednesday at Sea once again For those that do like to play Texa's Hold'em on this ship there is only 1 electronic table, thats it, on the Spirit Class there are 3 electronic table and they usually hold tournaments on those, not sure if they will hold a tournament on this ship with only 1 table. Fred, fyi, we were on the Spirit 3 weeks ago and there was only one Texas Hold'em table and they had several tournaments, several of which people in our group played in.
