Don Haynes Posted May 20, 2009 #76 Share Posted May 20, 2009 The problem is you are attempting to use American health issues and laws with an International company. DMH15 Posted May 20, 2009 #77 Share Posted May 20, 2009 In my perfect world nobody would smoke... But this is the real world. Some people I love smoke, some people I like smoke and some poeple I admire smoke. Just like on land there are each considerate and inconsiderate smokers and tolerant and intolerant non-smokers. Whereas I don't like smoke, one thing for sure, that cigarette is attached to a person, who has feelings. And smokers know this world is changing and they are seeing their opportunities to light up are becoming more restrictive every day. So I can understand their becoming a bit defensive. Recently in Dallas bars became non-smoking by ordinance. Now I can go to a sports bar and hang out and play trivia. It's really enjoyable. On the other hand, the smokers have seemed to take over patio dining in Dallas, that's basically the last place they can got eat, drink and smoke. On cruise ships the casinos are smoky, people say smoking and gambling go together. But there are a lot of non-smokers who would love to gamble but avoid the casinos. Short of two casinos, what is the answer? I don't know. I recall Celebrity had a bank of non-smoking slots - it was nice - and I think it gave an option to both groups. electricron Posted May 20, 2009 #79 Share Posted May 20, 2009 The neighbor was smoking and it was making my cabin unbearable, so they offered us another cabin. The following statistics should explain why I don't like to be around cigarette smoke. It is not a rights issue. It is a health issue. You can quote all the scientific data you wish. I can spout scientific data stating diesel exhaust from cruise ships are just as unhealthy. Are you going to choose to sail on a different cruise ship using a different fuel source for health reasons alone? I didn't think so. Auto exhausts are also just as unhealthy? Are you going to stop using autos? I didn't think so. Exhausts from coal electric power plants are just as unhealthy. Are you going to stop using electricity? I didn't think so. Your health reasons appear less and less sincere. Non-smokers can simply walk away from the smoke to avoid it, and there's plenty of locations on a NCL cruise ship that are smoke free. 20 to 30% of all potential passengers, Smokers are addicted to the smoke, have a very difficult time stopping, and most likely will avoid booking cruises on cruise ships that ban smoking entirely. In an industry that's barely making a profit not turning away any passengers, suddenly turning away 20% to 30% of them is a sure recipe for disaster. Carnival experimented with an entirely smoke free ship, I should note the Paradise profits fell 20% to 30% during the experiment.

Ms belp Posted May 20, 2009 #81 Share Posted May 20, 2009 Thank you, everyone. We can walk through the casinos, that's okay, but I appreciate the tip, CanadianTwosome! :) Our primary concern was a lingering odor inside our cabins. Since we don't have balcony cabins, I'm getting the feeling (after reading all your comments) that we should be okay. However, it will be a major consideration when we take our Baltic cruise next summer. Longer cruise, European clientele. You are right to be concerned about your European cruise. They will smoke. They don't seem to be as concerned about it.
sillysailor 1955 Posted May 20, 2009 #82 Share Posted May 20, 2009 A couple of years back on a cruise out of NYC (NCL Dawn) our neighbors smoked pot constantly on their balcony - I'm still not sure how they got it on there.:D
electricron Posted May 20, 2009 #83 Share Posted May 20, 2009 Quote from my previous post -- Separating smokers from nonsmokers, cleaning the air and ventilating buildings cannot eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke. What's your point? Do you really want almost EVERY cruise line in the world to go belly up by banning smokers from their ships, both passengers and crew members? Do you really believe the residual smoke will disappear in just a few short weeks? It'll take months for all the residual smoke to be removed from the ships. Meanwhile, who's paying the mortages for the cruise ships while they sit idle waiting for the residual smoke to magically disappear? If you're that worried about residual smoke, I strongly suggest taking a different vacation!
Richie2pies Posted May 20, 2009 #84 Share Posted May 20, 2009 If cruiselines thought by banning more smoking in various places would help their bottom line, they would have done it already. They need the 20-30% people who smoke. I suggest the people who are bothered by smoke find a way to live with it or give up cruising. By commenting on smoking and STILL cruising, the non-smokers prove to the cruiselines they WILL tolerate the smoking policies of that particular line. Billym1507 Posted May 20, 2009 #86 Share Posted May 20, 2009 I am a non smoker and my wife is a smoker. I dont mind smoke. On our last cruise there was a bar you could smoke in so we used it a lot. You would be amazed at the ammount of people who did not seem to mind smoking when there was a happy hour. The bar was packed with non smokers at this time. I have also noticed that the people in the smoking areas seem to have a better time and enjoy themselves more. Billy.
Surfgirl Posted May 20, 2009 #87 Share Posted May 20, 2009 You should be able to have a drink and a smoke at the bar in the casino. And I should be able to go to the bar and the casino and not have to breathe in smoke. Which is WHY-- I think a good compromise would be an ENCLOSED bar and an ENCLOSED area of the casino for smokers. Then everybody would be happy. *Edited to add... there is actually a smoke-free cruise organization. It's a group pushing for smoke-free cruises. Worth checking out! http://www.smokefreecruise.org/

mkad1109 Posted May 20, 2009 #91 Share Posted May 20, 2009 We just returned last month from a Celebrity Cruise which has a restrictive, but not "all or nothing" policy. I don't remember ever smelling smoke, not once. I believe there were places that allowed it, and those that didn't. What was nice is that it was not allowed on the balconies. On our Spirit cruise the folks next to us were smokers and it definitely cut back on our enjoyment as we were downwind from them! This is one place I seriously wish NCL would consider prohibit smoking since it does impede others enjoyment as well as present a safety risk. I agree with Electricron, that it is an addiction, one that I am sure many smokers wish they could give up, but it wouldn't be fair to expect them to go cold turkey on their vacation. I am concerned about second hand smoke as well, Swedish, but my belief is that it is more about prolonged exposure as opposed to a week at sea. I am insistent that for myself and my children we don't go places where it is smoky so in the scheme of things, I am not sure that a week at sea, as long as we don't hang in the casino will adversely affect our health. Unfortunately, science is finding that even a small amount of second hand smoke causes significant risk... just breathing in someone's smoke at a bar can trigger a heart attack. http://www.tobacco-facts.info/second_hand_smoke.htm Pechacek T.F. and Babb S (BMJ 328:980-983) reported that even small exposures to tobacco smoke increase the risk of ischemic heart disease (heart attack). The mechanism This is felt to be caused by inflammation, thrombosis and endothelial dysfunction. The risk for heart disease is non-linear and even small exposures causes a significant risk. Passive smoke exposure equal to 0.2 cigarettes per day causes a 30% increase in the rise of a heart attack in the passive smoker. At 5 cigarettes per day there is a 50% increase. It takes more than 30 cigarettes per day to produce a is a 100% increase in risk. Thus, most of the risk is incurred early one with low exposure levels. Source: Law M.R. and Wald N. N. Prog Cardiovascular Disease 46:31-38, 2003. Research indicates that 30 minutes of typical exposure to secondhand smoke causes artery changes similar to that of an active smoker.
