What is the different btw Carnival and RCCL?

Recommended Posts

From our friends who have sailed both, not much. Different decor, smaller rooms on RCCL, better food on Carnival. Oh, and a markup in price, undoubtedly to pay for the insane cost of insurance it must carry to have an ice rink on board. A lot of the complaints against Carnival I see have to do with the decor. I personally don't base my vacations on the prettiest ships. I base it on itinerary, date, ship and price. If I ever decide to spend a cruise sitting and staring at the decor in the atrium, I'll re-evaluate LOL.

I have to admit, I get a good laugh from the folks on the RCCL board (we've been doing research for future cruises) who make fun of people who sail on Carnival (Carnies? Carnivores? Seriously? Are you trying to make yourself feel better about your social standing? Because RCCL is no luxury line LOL). If Carnival is the Wal-Mart, what is RCCL? The CVS? The Walgreens? A higher price for essentially the same product. It'd be funny if it wasn't so sad that so many people on that board judge people based on what cruise line they sail on. There have to be underlying issues there LOL.

We could afford to sail on any line we want. We choose Carnival because we've never had a bad Carnival experience. We've met people from all over the world, from all walks of life, and we'll keep sailing Carnival because they consistently provide a good vacation for us. We tried Princess, and while aspects of that trip were more to our liking, it just wasn't as much fun. The food is great, the shows are above par, and there's never a dull moment for us.

That said, we've only done 7- and 8-night cruises. I can't vouch for the shorter cruises ;)

Why would someone even post on this thread that has not cruised on both lines? Makes no sense. Hear say is all that you have.

I would love to give RCCL a try but cannot justify the price difference. As others have said, if they'd lower their prices I'd sail them to give them a shot. Our best friends sail them every year but when we compared our upcoming cruises and pricing they were pretty shocked at the price difference and may be moving to Carnival next year.

Not going to happen. Yes there has been some discounting by Royal but far and wide, they will always be at a premium to Carnival and their ships are the main reason why.

Which is why CCL is eating RCI's (and everybody else's) lunch. :D

Let's examine that. RCCL has larger ships. Nobody is denying that. What are the amenities of the larger RCCL ships that Carnival doesn't have? Ice rink: I don't care. Promenade: A brilliant way to get people to pay more for inside cabins. 3-deck dining room: I don't care. Rock climbing wall: i don't care. Flowrider: that might be kind of neat. Meanwhile Carnival has some fun water slides. Am I going to pay several hundred dollars more for a week to ride the Flowrider instead of water slides? No thank you.

Ships are the difference. Better crew too on Royal Caribbean. I am willing to pay more for that. I gave Carnival two chances. One on a Fantasy class-Fascination and the Glory so I tried at the time their biggest and best. Both cruises failed miserably. The ships are cheaply built and it shows. The crew spoke but it seemed as if they were going out of their way to do it. You get what you pay for with price. I will stick with the other lines over Carnival. Just curious, what Royal ships have you cruised?

Not really. Royal is doing just fine. I only wish that they would stop trying to lower their standards with the cuts to bring themselves down to Carnival's level. If that happens, I may have to find a new cruise line.

You might wish to recheck their balance sheets. ;)

Innovation costs money or one can do as Carnival does and keep turning out the same ships year after year and take away from other cruise lines their ideas like cantilevered whirpools and waterparks.;)

By that do you mean become competitive like CCL has been? :D

BTW, have you actually sailed Carnival? I have sailed both and on some counts it would be up to Carnival's level.;) Just sayin.

Different product.......different prices.......it is just like all cruiselines.........does Disney ring a bell:confused:

I'm just glad there are different products to choose from.........

Wow, you're right, Carnival is so stupid to keep using the ideas that keep them more profitable and more popular than the other lines, aren't they? :D

Did you bother to read one of my posts above which gave the two ships that I have tried on Carnival? Yes I meant Royal lowering their standards to that of Carnival. I found the Carnival product to be the worst of any cruise line that I have taken which is all of the major lines. I'm just glad that Holland and Princess have not been totally Carnivalized.

See if I have this correct. By looking at your signature line, I assume that you have the cruise lines listed that you have cruised thus far. No Royal to be found which means that you have no first hand information about Royal but feel free to spout off here your opinion of a line that you have not cruised. And you Carnival cheerleaders get so upset when someone posts about Carnival in a negative way when they have not cruised them. What's the difference?

Let's see, you posted this above.

I'd say that's about right.

RCCL has larger ships with more physical activities aboard. Other than that, they cater to the same market and provide more or less the same product. You'll find that most Carnival-bashers are going by what they've heard and have never actually sailed Carnival.

LMAO at that. Gotta love the pot meet kettle folks.

Just out of curiosity, we compared prices for a similar itin & same sail date in balcony cabins on CCL, RCCL, & NCL yesterday....they were all within 100.00pp range from the highest to the lowest.

I was quite shocked.

I did not think that they were that competatively priced now.

It had been a few years since I compared pricing and it was a much bigger difference back then. Now they seem very competitive.

They are getting more and more competitive.......it pays to do your homework........we are paying less to sail on the Mariner then the Splendor and actually paid the same price as the Valor to sail on the Crown Princess.......all same balcony cabins......

Although if you priced inside cabins.......Carnival is pretty much always cheaper......so maybe that is what people are looking at:confused:

All except the Veendam.... right? :p

Yep, it was recently bastardized by Carnival for the love of money. What was once a beautiful ship now looks like something that belongs in the Carnival fleet but it doesn't surprise me that Mickey is doing this.

CAT FOUND!!! (ps check my profile on here... LOL!)

OMG - You found Fluffy!!!! Congrats!

Nope, it was just a question.

Looks like you had a bad experience on Carnival, and are voting with your wallet, as you should.

Personally, I have had better overall cruises on Carnival, exclusive of any price differences from the other lines. For example, I doubt I would cruise Disney ever again, even if there prices came back in line. Just not my thang.

That's all I ever look at - especially lately.

I have never stepped foot on a Disney ship and never will. First no casinos and no matter how hard they work to keep the kids area away from the adults, there is only so much Mickey Mouse stuff that I could take. I do think that externally, they have some of the most beautiful ships afloat. Love that classic liner look.

I have cruised twice with Carnival and will never do it again. They do not match up to the other cruise lines that I have taken. I think that the Voyager class ships are some of the best designed ships going today. I love the Royal Promenade and Viking Crown lounge.

I find that the entertainment is better on Royal due to the ice shows and better productions shows with four singers in place of two.

Food is about the same as it all tastes like cheap buffet quality.

ummmmmm....why is someone with a distaste for Carnival, cruising the Carnival boards????

Shall we take a poll on what the audience thinks?

:D:D

I don't care what you or anyone else thinks. I have an actual opinon of both lines that I can give unlike other cheerleaders who only know one side of the story but are willing to give their one sided point of view. This thread caught me eye just like a thread yesterday where some poor newbie was being burned at the stake by the Carnival cheerleaders. I spoke up. Most did not like it. The truth can sometimes hurt.
