taxi from naples to pompeii

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have an idea of the cost to go from the cruise ship dock in naples to pompeii via taxi. Will a taxi take 4? We are trying to save time because we want to go on to sorrento by late am via train. Can you get a ticket for the train from pompeii to sorrento on the train?

You might have a problem getting a taxi to take you just one way to Pompeii. That will cut their fee.

We did do a taxi to Pompeii then on to Sorrento for 8 hrs for 100 EUR pp.

There were only two of us. I think 4 would be crowded unless you could find a larger sedan cab. The cab we were in definitely wouldn't hold 4.

Why don't you search the boards here and find the directions to the train station in Naples and take the Circumvesuviana Train to Pompeii then on to Sorrento, if that is what you want to do. With possibly the hydrofoil back to the ship or vice versa.

agabbymama - Did you just get a taxi at the dock and tell them where you wanted to go? Did the driver wait while you toured Pompeii?? I'm also trying to plan a do-it-yourself tour but trying to include Capri as well as the other two.

Yes, we did just get the taxi at the pier. It's a long story. I had originally planned to take the 9:00 hydrofoil to Sorrento, then the train back to Pompeii and Naples.

The Grand Princess docked at one end of the port and the ferry pier was at the other. The Captain announced there would be a shuttle because we were so far. The only problem was the shuttle was starting at 9:00 and there was no way we would be able to catch the 9:00 hydrofoil.

As we were standing there deciding what to do, we asked a couple of cab drivers if they would take us to the ferry pier, pointing on the map. Nobody wanted that short of a fare. We gave up and sat on a guardrail, thoroughly disgusted.

This one little Italian taxi driver came over and in fairly good English started telling us he would take us to Pompeii and Sorrento. I laughed and said I'm sure he would, but at what price. He continued talking, had a small brochure, negotiated the price of 200 EUR for the 2 of us for an 8 hour day. His name was Pasquale and he turned out to be such a gentleman. When we said yes and got into his cab, the other cabbies were all teasing him in Italian. But we started out, and he told us, because we chose him, he would give us a mini-tour of Naples before returning us to the ship.

He took us to Pompeii first and pointed out a restaurant/hotel for us to meet him at in 3 hours. I told him we weren't going into the museum, that 2 hours would be plenty but he insisted 3 hours would be better. We went to the ruins, then returned to the tented area for shopping, bought a few things, then the proprietor took us to a shop with limoncello (Sp?) and we saw how it was made, had some tasting, and made some purchases. After 2 1/2 hours headed to the spot to meet Pasquale and he was already there waiting for us.

He would stop for photo ops, escorted us across busy streets, and was so concerned that two older ladies were traveling in Italy alone. Didn't our families know how dangerous it could be? He had American CDs of Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra and got such a kick out of us singing along, that we knew all the songs. I had planned to buy him lunch, but after showing us a nice, affordable restaurant he disappeared, not to return until after we had finished our lunch. He asked us if we wanted to go to a Cameo factory, didn't just take us there like the ship's tours do. After our shopping in Sorrento, he crossed the street to carry our packages and escort us back across the street to the cab. And upon returning to Naples, fulfilled his promise of the mini-tour of Naples. We saw sooo many buildings with their intricate facades, the castle, the ferry pier, library, and just so much too even try to remember.

It was like seeing "lifestyles of the rich and famous" only we were living it. He was our own personal driver (not a guide) for the day, doing what we wanted to do. It was our most expensive day of our 21 day trip, but it was worth every penny. Wish I had an email or contact for him, as I'd like to give him a reference, but didn't even think about getting it, as I knew I wasn't returning.

Another alternative is to join your roll call on this website and get a small group together. The private drivers are usually around 400-500 EUR for the vehicle, and if you get 6 or so of you together that would lower the cost pp.

Have a great trip, whatever you decide to do.

It is supposed to be doable. A lot depends on where you dock, from the ferry terminal, if you can walk or have any mobility issues, and if the hydrofoils are even running in November (I thought I read they stop in October), you would have to allow more time to do the ferry. Be sure to allow enough time and you should be fine taking the ferry to Sorrento, then the Circumvesuviana train back to Pompeii and continue back to Naples. I'm not sure about Capri, as we didn't try to get there.

Have a great trip, and just be prepared that Princess information isn't always accurate. And that little transportation is provided for the independent traveler.

Oops, just saw you are on NCL, not Princess,
