Beach4me Posted May 17, 2009 #2 Share Posted May 17, 2009 For me, no trip to Maui is complete without lunch or dinner at the Pineapple Grill up at Kapalua. If the chef is preparing papio when you're there, GET IT! It is probably the single best meal I've ever eaten anywhere! Here's a link: http://www.pineapplekapalua.com/ If you're only going as far as downtown Lahaina while on Maui, my favorite place is the Lahaina Fish Company. They do mahi-mahi better than any other restaurant on the island, imo. One suggestion, substitute the rice with the Maui onion mashed potatoes. YUM!!! Here's a link: http://www.lahainafishcompany.com/ Another suggestion, I'd skip dessert at LFC and walk a few doors down to Kimo's for a piece of Hula Pie. Kimo's invented Hula Pie. You can share a piece amongst two or three people. If you're in Lahaina and don't feel like a meal, stop in Kimo's for a piece of Hula Pie and a few minutes of relaxation. You'll be glad you did! (btw - Kimo's is a good restaurant, too. It is my third favorite restaurant on Maui. Here's a link: http://www.kimosmaui.com/ ) In Waikiki, I'd recommend House Without A Key at the Halekulani. This is a Waikiki tradition in one of Waikiki's grand hotels. Even if you just stop in for appetizers and drinks, it's worth a stop. Here's a link: http://www.halekulani.com/dining/house_without_a_key/ Have a fabulous trip!
sceptic Posted May 18, 2009 #3 Share Posted May 18, 2009 I'm a fan of local food. On Maui we like the Honolua Store and Aloha Mixed Plate. Tons of food at very reasonable prices - even for the mainland. The term "local food" has a specific meaning in Hawaii, and I suggest you look it up. It includes 1 or 2 scoops of rice, macaroni salad, and other sundry cool stuff. And the stuff is good - the kitchen at the Aloha Mixed Plate also happens to prepare the food for the Old Lahaina Luau, located next door. On Kauai there's a great local food place in Hanalei (the name escapes me - a couple of blocks off the beach). Have a shave ice too at Waimea. That's local fare, and yummy to boot. Not-so-local restaurants I like include Cafe Pesto in Hilo - perhaps the best pizza I've ever had, the Kiawe Kitchen at Volcano, and Huggos in Kona. The latter has an ocean view to die for. We prefer the non-tourist, non-expensive places in Hawaii. Nothing wrong with the finer establishments (Chez Paul on Maui is one of the best French restaurants I've ever been to), but we like it a little more low-key. We are not to picky and love good food!!:) When I go to Hawaii I HAVE to have a Katsu chicken plate lunch. It is fun to try local food. Try L & L Drive in for example. If you are on Kauai don't miss the Hanamaulu Tea House. Be sue to say you want to sit in the tea house. Truly unique!
brettsmom2004 Posted May 18, 2009 #5 Share Posted May 18, 2009 If you're into burgers, there is always BUBBA'S BURGERS!....that's on Kauai' going up the east coastline, still in the little town you're docked in. We got a wonderful welcome...we emailed them a year before we arrived to get directions to get there and when we arrived they had made signs and posted them in the shop welcoming us...it was so cool!....BUBBA was there waiting for us and even gave us a free milkshake which was to die for....lol....Burgers were great, and they have a good menu too.....just a little place on the strip.....pictures of BUBBA'S can be seen on webshots. http://family.webshots.com/slideshow/570614964OzuNWO Goldie
