Taxi to and from Peggys Cove

Recommended Posts

We will be in Halifax in August during the week from 9 to 6 pm. Carnival offering two trips - one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Total per trip 3 hours. From what I read, it’s takes about 1 hour to get there and back. Which leaves us only with 1 hour at the Cove. I was thinking to get a taxi and just head there by myself and spend more time exploring. Or, you think, if we take a ship tour, 1 hour would be enough? Also, are there taxis by the port? Can we catch the taxi at the Peggys Cove to get back to the pier? How much taxi would cost for 4 people? Carnival tour is $ 39 per person.

Really appreciate the help.

rent a car. Its about $30-$40 US,,,,Avis and Enterprise are close by(and Avis will drive you back if you ask nicely)...Then you can see the entire town easily. I go to Peggy's cove first. I was there before any tour bus....by an hour...

Hi Newcruiser,

An hour in Peggy's Cove is more than enough time, unless you want to stop for a bite to eat at the only cafe. It is a very small fishing village and a lighthouse. We too are sailing on CCL Triumph, but we are going on 6/15/09. This will be our 5th time on this itinerary, so if you have any questions just ask.

Here is a tip for seeing Halifax! Try FRED, the free bus that takes you to all the sites in Halifax. Here is the link to their website:

It doesn't take you out to Peggy's Cove, but it does go the Citadel, Maritime Museum, Cemetery, Casino, Bewery, Shopping and the Waterfront.

You would have to have your taxi wait for you and take you back to Halifax---very expensive. Peggy's Cove is very tiny and you can walk anywhere in five minutes. It only has maybe a hundred residents, if that, so it is not a place that would have a taxi service. An hour is plenty of time to wander around. If you rent a car you can drive there in 45 minutes. You can park in the large parking lot behind the restaurant/gift shop.

If you continue on beyond Peggy's Cove for about 5 minutes or less, you will see the sign for the Swiss Air Memorial. Look closely as it is a small sign and you turn into a small parking lot on your left and walk into the memorial.

Thank you for all responses. We decided to take a Carnival tour. They offer two - on 9.30-12.30 and 2-5 pm. I read thet going in the afternoon is better due to less fog and less crowds. Can anyone confirm that?

Fog very often burns off by the afternoon but it can last all day. You are correct in your thinking that there is more chance of sunshine in the afternoon. Of course it could be a beautiful sunny day to begin with and fog can roll in later. Such is life around the coast.

It will be busy there in the morning or the afternoon if on a cruise tour since there will be several buses from the ship. There will likely be fewer other tourists there in the morning, and the locals tell their visitors to go there between the cruise tours. That's what we did last time, we got there around 1pm, and passed the buses coming back to Halifax. $39 for the ship tour isn't out of line considering how far out of town Peggy's Cove is. As others have said, an hour is more than enough time there. If you chose to take a taxi, I'm sure you would make that guy's day as I can see it running a couple hundred dollars there and back.

As for the weather, I actually like it better there with a little fog. It adds to the atmosphere of the small Atlantic fishing village.

Hi Sailaway - My sisters and I will be on the June 15th trip also. This is our 1st time in that part of the country - what would be your first recommendation? We're thinking of the museum, Peggy's Cove and the cemetery. Should we do an organized tour or just go on our own? TIA
