Solarium question- never seen one on a ship!

Recommended Posts

During sunny weather, can you lounge around the solarium area and still get some sun rays or is it all shaded? I assume this area is a little quieter and more low key than around the pool area (sounds relaxing!). We are going on the Grandeur and have only seen pictures but I can't really tell what it is like- size, shade vs. sun, availability of chairs, etc. Can't wait to see it in person but any info about these would be great beacuse I am so impatient to sail! Vision class ships have a removable roof over the Solarium. However, they don't always open it (depends on weather) and there is usually a smaller area of direct sun since the area is still surrounded by walls. It is generally not a good place to work on your tan, but is a great place to relax.

Depending on the crowd it can get busy (the older the crowd the busier, since these are the comfy chairs). It is quieter but kids are allowed in, just not in the pool or hot tubs.

When we sailed on the Brilliance a year ago, we had great weather. But the roof of the solarium was never opened. So I suppose the answer to your question is no you can't tan in there. But it is a wonderful place to relax and have quiet time.

The Solarium is my favorite place!

On the Radiance class ships, the roof was opened only a few times and only in ports. It was then I got some sun and got slightly burned. You can expect more shade area's than sun area's. The Solarium is a more relaxing place, adults 16 years and older, nice padded chairs and a great place to read and relax....maybe a nap or two.

I don't remember the Granduer' Solarium too well, I do remember the roof being closed a lot. If you want sun, the outdoor pool is better, but very crowded and the chair hogs will have already taken the best chairs, the upper deck is better but too windy for me.

The Solarium also has a cafe...limited hours...bar and bar service.

Take some good books and enjoy!

From what I understand it's the discression of the captain on whether it gets opened or not.

On the Vision, they didn't open it up - but again, it was in the 70's so it made the pool area nice and warm but you could still see daylight.

On the Granduer this past month, the top was open. It slides back 1/2 way to uncover the pool. Most of the rest of the deck area is covered. This pool is great for adults as there are no kids allowed and 2 hot tubs that are adult-only too.

So.. depending on weather.. will depend if it opens or not. Still a nice place to hang out.

ON the Radiance last month (w. Carib.), I don't remember the solarium roof ever being opened. Perhaps it may have been at some time, but never when we were there...

When i was on the brilliance, it was open 2 days when we were near aruba.

On the Navigator and Adventure, they both have open solariums (No roof), so not a problem if right by the pool.
