Wyndcruise Posted May 27, 2009 #1 Share Posted May 27, 2009 For those of you who have Sprint as your cell provider, have you successfully texted on FOS in order to keep in touch with fellow cruisers? We called Sprint today and they explained the pricing structure (.20 per text for our plan), but gave no guarantees as to it actually working onboard. We will be on the Eastern itinerary. Any experience with this particular scenario? Thanks in advance for your response.
rpertusio Posted May 27, 2009 #2 Share Posted May 27, 2009 Here's a link from Sprint's website specifically about Cruise Ship service: http://www.nextel.com/en/services/worldwide/cruise_ship_roaming_sprint.shtml I see no 'texting' capability... but I assume it works similarly to Verizon. (Both use a CDMA network.) The company that 'runs' the cell coverage on the ship is Wireless Maratime Services (WMS), and they list Sprint on their website here: http://www.cellularatsea.com/roaming.htm For Verizon, costs were 0.50 per message to send, 0.05 to receive. Also note, messages were limited to 150 characters, not 160 as 'on land'. - Ryan
Wyndcruise Posted May 27, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted May 27, 2009 Thanks very much for your response Ryan. I appreciate you taking the time. I was just wondering if anyone actually had success using their Sprint onboard FOS. A Sprint representative told me the rates but further explained that they didn't know if it would actually work or not (even though it appears on their website that it should). Obviously, I'm sure conditions at any given time would probably play a great role.
