wrighka -

lol, the destiny expert - i can live with that. i don't have the menus, but they're similar to others available widely here on cc and the image sites, i'll remember to take pics next time!.

ny strip steak was on the first night, lobster / prime rib on the second, rack of lamb the third, i think the norweigan salmon the fourth, and other stuff the last - that's what i ordered :)

- main dining rooms - universe (aft) and galaxy (midship off the lobby / atrium) - i believe galaxy was open for breakfast, lunch - only 1 of the 2 is open daily. the normal breakfast fare, varied lunches and great dinner menu. formal night was the first sea day (2nd night)

lido buffet - exactly what you'd expect. lines were never bad, imo. pretty good selections, but never ate here for dinner

ny deli - located adjacent to lido buffet - recommend the reuben. yum.

happy valley - asian corner - great asian food fare

taste of nations buffet - also part of lido complex - shifted every day with menus such as italian, caribbean, mexican, etc.

the grill - again on lido - hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken fingers, fries and the like.

24 hr pizzeria - located on the lido, about 7-8 different kinds of pizza, calzones, and ceasar salad with our without chicken 24 hrs. great!

24 hr ice cream & frozen yogurt. again on the lido. both port and starboard.

the sushi bar - on promenade deck right by the casino bar. open daily from something like 5-8pm - around dinner times. not for sushi purists, though still a good appetizer.

mexican lido deck party - around 11.30-midnight on one night - big mexican buffet, which was decent... but with a taqueria on every corner here in tx, not the best interpretation of mexican, tex/mex, but it doesn't propose itself to be...

formalities shop - order candies, chocolates, cakes, and more here.

room service - oh, how i love room service. the breakfast menu is kind of limited, but all other offerings were of sufficient variety to keep me interested - anything from a salad and veggie sticks after an excursion, to a late night blt. room service is free 24 hrs, i never experienced more than about a 15 min wait (even when quoted 30 mins at a peak time), just give a tip to the server. anywhere from about 2-5 is more than adequate, some suggest 1.00 per plate.

afternoon tea - little finger sandwiches and pastries and the like, along with tea...

unfortunately, there is no supper club on destiny. but plenty of variety otherwise. hope that helps! (and that i didn't leave anything out!)

I go in 30 days. Also, Falcor do you know anything about cabin 8339?

here's the details on your cabin:

Cabin 8339 8G OSTW 185/60 sq ft

Beds: twin/king

View: window and aft-view extended balcony

connecting balconies: 8334

TV; telephone; 110 AC current; individual climate control; hair dryer: wall safe; 3-closets; shower; sofa and coffee table.

looks like it's a pretty standard aft view - score! you'll enjoy the larger balcony and stunning view, i'm sure.

one thing to be mindful of, though, is that the lido deck sun and sea restaurant IS directly above your cabin, with tables intended to be placed there. you might experience some noise as some report when they move the tables / chairs around. i don't know what your tolerance to as much is, and hear it's not that bad - but something to be mindful of.

also, as the rear of the ship is raked, some may be able to see you from above when standing at the rail. just be aware. finally, some say that air circulation is not exactly 'breezy' in this location, as it's in the exact middle of the rear of the ship, and air follows the draft of the ship. i haven't personally experienced, but that's my understanding from the breadth of my findings here on cc

for what it's worth, i'd love an aft view balcony and wouldn't let any of that deter me... enjoy your cruise, and report back! :D

and watch this site for current menus:

http://www.zydecocruiser.com/CarnivalSpirit/Alaska/menus.htm

bill / zydecocruiser is great about taking detailed pictures - one point though, is he is on spirit to alaska, which has some special seafood dishes.

so here's another of his cruise's menus:

http://www.zydecocruiser.com/free_08/menu_d.htm

regardless of the cruise or itinerary - i see a LOT of familiar things on these menus. they're a good example of what's available, though some items rotate / or are otherwise not available / offered, while other new or unique ones (such as in an alaska cruise) may be. hope that helps.

I appreciate the info. I was originally booked in an 8c, (not a guarantee), and my TA called me with the option to upgrade to this cabin at no additional cost!!. Of course I grabbed it. Then when I went to make my final payment of 200 dollars, I found out that the price had dropped, and I was paid off!!! So I will not be complaining about much on this trip. This will be my first balcony too!!!

I like this location because I can run up and grab a slice of pizza anytime I want.

Thanks for the description of happy valley. I saw that on the deck plan the other day and made a mental note to ask about that, and you supplied the info.

Falkcor, thanks for the info! :) The Destiny will be a new class for us and it's nice to gather as much info as possible before sailing. ;) And do I know what you mean about the Mexican Buffet! We have a GREAT place locally (2 really as they have one on each side of the city) and it's a bit Tex-Mex but heavy on the Mex side. :D So anything else (other than someplace in Mexico) is "fake" to us. :o Plus when we head to TX to vist or vacation we always find a local place not a chain! We're doing a B2B in February and are in Cabin 7316 for both sailings. We are so looking forward to these Cruises! DH will miss the fish & Chips place that's on the Conquest Class so he'll just have to get his fill in November. As for Room Service Have never ever had a bad BLT! And just love the turkey wrap from the deli. Haven't tried the Asian food yet wasn't to impressed with the menu on the Conquest, or the hours it was open or maybe it was the long line?

Falkcor - Thanks so much for taking the time and energy to reply to my post. I didn't expect so much detail, but certainly appreciate it!

kim -

no problem ;) actually, if you haven't noticed, i have this odd problem - where it's hard NOT to be detailed, did you see my review  lol

speaking of which, i realized that i never finished the end, including the food, etc. (but questions like this make me consider it still!), so i felt obliged to fill ya in

have fun on the destiny!

no problem - that's a mighty fine upgrade you got right there, in my opinion, and a great balcony to be your first! just go with an open mind, don't let the little things like tables / chairs on the lido bother you, and remember you got a kickin' upgrade for FREE! :D

totally agreed re: the location to the lido - very convenient.

janet / john -

no problem. you noted that destiny's a new class - but as you've been on conquest ships (i assume, i see you have one booked coming up), you'll feel at home on destiny. to put it into perspective - in a lot of ways, they're the same ship and have the same general layout.

destiny was first, of course... then they built triumph / victory... for that, they just added an extra passenger deck, but everything else is pretty identical... then they came around with the conquest class, and retained the additional passenger deck, then stretched her out something like 50-100'... the extra space goes toward more cabins, the supper club, and the fish & chips station, effectively...

we'll leave it at that, but splendor and dream (less so) are all still based off the same basic design destiny debuted 13 yrs ago... one thing that's actually nice about destiny - you get the same basic amenities / layout / size of ship, but with less passengers.

i think the hours for the asian station are pretty weak, in my opinion. you're right - it often didn't seem to be open, i think they'd be wise to extend the hours just a little... however, i'll say i never saw much of a line on destiny, i think because lots of people never made it too far toward aft.

and a b2b... color me, jealous  have fun, happy crusin'

If im gonna sleep, im gonna sleep. If im awake, Im awake. I don't think chair scraping will bother me. I live on the 39th floor of a high rise, and sometimes the wind really blows and something on the roof rattles. I sleep. The next door neighbor complains. So I should be fine.

I love my ta.. She did a great job on that. I have been telling my friends to use her, and one got a great rate on a Panama Canal cruise on Princess.

Thanks again for your help.

i'm in the 'same boat' with you on that one. if i were booking a specific room, would i consider that? maybe... if i ended up in that room via guarantee or the like, would i mind? no... would i turn down a kickin' aft balcony upgrade, for FREE? heck no

again, no problem - my pleasure. ;)

Falcor, thanks so much for all the info!!! I can't wait to board the Destiny in January. Everytime the ship name comes up on CC I hope for your input and this thread really proves that I am right to look for your reviews.

We are on the exact same itinerary you took - can't wait!

Miriam

PS, to the OP - great question!!!! Thanks for asking.

that's very kind of you to say, i appreciate it :)

you're going to have so much fun, i'm sure - i loved grand cayman, and dunns river falls in ocho rios was actually my favorite excursion. it's not every day you climb a waterfall!

what are you planning to do? let me know if you have any questions, looks like you've still got a little while to go

Man, we do have a while to go for sure!! :( But, the wait will be worth it for sure.

As for plans, we have not really planned much yet. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to do Stingray Bay but I think my DD would freak. And since this cruise is more for her, I don't want to push her into anything that may ultimately be deemed as a negative overall.

I wish I could think of some cool questions but I can't seem to come up with anything decent to ask. I feel like a deer caught in the headlights at times when it comes to Carnival :D But that is good!!!! I love being a Carnival newbie - so much to learn!!!!!

i don't know how old your daughter is, but don't necessarily rule it out. granted, you know her better than i do, but we did have an 8 yr old along with us - and a little 8 yr old at that. she was fine, until we started feeding. the rays got pretty excited, and started flapping around in the water. she was taken by surprise at first, and 'freak'ed a little bit, and swam over closer to the boat.

after a little while, i think she saw that everything was ok - everyone else was having fun, and when past the initial feeding frenzy, the rays were pretty calm, actually. she even kissed one of the rays! what a turn-a-round.

i think if a parent or even older (bigger) sibling were to accompany them, and even move away with them when they REALLY want to - they'd feel very comfortable, and end up enjoying it and realizing the pleasure that is stingray city...

like i said, i don't know your daughter or even how old she is, but just count this as a vote toward not entirely discounting it, even for the lil ones. if you're right and she still freaks out - there's snorkeling too, and the 8 yr old LOVED that... she even didn't mind watching from the safety of the boat (with a parent) when she realized she was being silly and missing out on the fun...

for whatever that's worth :D it could be an experience to share with your child, that would help them overcome similar things in the future. post any future questions to my review if you don't wanna start a new thread - that might actually be better to keep all this together for future cruisers

AWESOME - i found the pic i was looking for... take a look at this... this is the aforementioned 8 yr old - kissing a stingray!

src-4.jpg

that's mark button, also kissing the stingray - the head guy at moby dick tours. as you can see, he, and the rest of the staff, but him in particular, are GREAT with kids... he even wrangled the sting ray and had it calm enough for a skiddish (and can you see what i meant by a small one at that) 8 yr old - and she loved it! she kept going on about how she was going to have 7 yrs of good luck, and... how she kissed a sting ray. and how much bigger it was than her... she wouldn't shut up about the sting rays, to be frank.

Kerrytens, we've done the Stingrays 3 times now, 2nd & 3rd time we took "newbies" with us. But the first time was a bit scary for me as I'm not a great swimmer. :o I would suggest you go but try and be some of the last ones off the boat. This gives you time to observe things plus you don't get pushed off by some one in a hurry who thinks your moving to slow! (yes that did happen to me the first time) I love being in the water just need to do it at my pace. :D The Turtle farm is pretty cool also, you get to hold a small turtle and have your photo taken plus it's just interesting. Last time in GC we did the 3 stop island tour Rum bakery, Turtle Farm and Hell it's a nice tour but well............if the option came up again we'd do just the Turtle Farm. It's even better now as they've built their own "water" park area w/beach. check it out here http://www.boatswainsbeach.ky/ :) Keep doing your research and asking questions it's the best way to decide what your going to do.

Falkor, yes we've been on the Conquest and November will be our 3rd sailing on her. The 2nd with the same group of friends and extended family. We sailed together 2 years ago and only 2 of the 6 other couples had cruised before. Needless to say they are all hooked now! :p And don't be "green" plan it out! This will be our 2nd B2B our first was on the Holiday. We like ships that do 5 days with different ports to get varity. Plus 2 5 days B2B can at times be cheaper than a 7 day! And we figure if we're going to pay airfare out of OKC we might as well get the most out of it. And turn around day on the ship is just so much fun! No one can figure out how you got on the ship so quick and how all the Crew knows you by name!

Thanks for the info and pic Falkor (said 8 yr. old is adorable BTW) and to you as well JRock!! Great advice from both of you. I have a lot of time to really think about it so it may happen.

OK, in an attempt to get somewhat back on track with this thread (to the OP, my apologies - didn't mean to semi hijack your most excellent question!). Is there one food item that is a must do? My only cruise experience is with Princess and the pizza came highly recommended. So, what is it that I need to try?

Also, I LOVE lobster but we will be skipping elegant night - will I get a chance to have it any other night? Please say yes :o

hmmmm.... a 'must do'... food is so subjective, so here's a few:

- rack of lamb was very tender and stellar

- i ALWAYS got a few shrimp cocktail, every night (there are only 4 shrimp each but they're good)

- the escargot was an interested change of pace - if it's not something you'd normally get, give it a try

- the sweet and sour shrimp was pretty tasty, too

- the flatiron steak is available every night - good for an alternate option, but it's no filet

- pasta dishes in mdr are available as starters - definitely recommend that

- you've got to try the warm chocolate melting cake at least once - i don't like sweets much, though, so not my fave

- grilled reuben from ny deli (or room service) remains my favorite sandwich

- the steak sandwich with brie (room service) was pretty good too

- happy valley asian station has good noodle bowls - can't remember the names of the food though :)

- the caribbean day at 'taste of the nations' was pretty good, imo

- pizza is good, but not great imo - but it's available 24/7 (5)!

sadly, the lobster and prime rib are available only on the elegant night in the MDR - you won't find it any other time... i think that might be true for the escargot, but that's not as big a loss imo :D

if you love lobster so much though, you might consider checking your daughter into camp carnival for dinner? she'll have a blast, and you'll get your lobster(s)

Choc. melting cake and order the fresh fruit plate to dip in the choc. too! :D

Room service BLT have yet to have a bad one on any ship and when they say Bacon they mean BACON! More than enough in the sandwich! :)

The Turkey Wrap from the deli is one of my Favs. :p

flat iron steaks - that's just a cut of beef. from wikipedia:

'The flat iron steak is a cut of steak from the shoulder of a steer, also known as the Teres Major. Whole, this muscle is known as Infraspinatus, and one may see this displayed in some butcher shops and meat markets as a "top blade" roast. Steaks that are cross cut from this muscle are called top blade steaks or patio steaks. As a whole cut of meat it usually weighs around 2 to 3 lbs, is located adjacent to the heart of the shoulder clod, under the seven bone. The entire top blade usually yields 4 steaks, between 8 to 12oz. each. Flat iron steaks usually have a significant amount of marbling

Restaurants, particularly upscale, have recently begun serving flat iron steaks on their menus. Especially popular are flat irons from Wagyu beef, as a way for chefs to offer more affordable and profitable dishes featuring Wagyu or Kobe beef.'

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_iron_steak

they're good - but it's just a pretty typical steak, in the end.
