We were on the POA last summer. You will have a fantastic trip. The islands are great and you will have spectacular view no matter where you are on the ship. The only place the that the side of the ship really came into play was on the last day when we sailed along the Napali Coast.

On our trip the captain sailed from Nawiliwili, Kauai counter clockwise around the island which meant that the port (left) side of the ship was facing the coast. We were on the port side so we were able to view the coast from our cabin, with a glass of wine, as opposed to being up on deck somewhere.

Actually, there was one other place that the side of the ship came into play. When we left Hilo and and sailed around the south side of the big island to Kona at night, and the lava flowing into the Pacific from Kilauea was visible on the starboard side of the ship...

I agree with booking portside on Pride of America, for the Napali Coast sailby. You might want to check out the Hawaii ports of call board here for more information and great tips on visiting Hawaii via cruise ship.

The lava sailby involves one or more complete turns of the ship while directly off the coast -- but even if the captain does a brief turn at the end of the Napali Coast sailby, it's not as long a view as the portside gets.
