How much to tip an excursion guide?

What is the typical tip per person for an excursion guide? Is there a standard amount (to be scaled up/down based on one's experience)?

 

I would like to know since cash is not used on board the ships, and I'd like to have enough ones, fives and tens on hand when the time comes.

10-20 % depending on how great he/she was.

I was able to book on a ship that is offering free and deeply discounted excursions. In such a case, what would you recommend?

Depends on the service I will still stick to my 10-20 %. 10m for okay service 20 for great.

On a bus excrusion I would expect to tip $3 to $5 per person for a half day and double that for a full day. On a whale watching or helicopter trip I would probably double up on that only because of the value of the trip.

Yes, I must add that Putterdude is right on. I don't do the 10-20% on the really expensive tours. I forgot and (how could I) how expensive the Alaska tour are. :)
