Venice to Murano

Recommended Posts

The vaporettos go out there on a regular schedule, and would be included in your vaporetto passes if you purchase them. Definitely the easiest and most convenient option. There are "free" boats that take you to Murano - you have to see a glass show, then you're on your own. But if you're going to purchase a vaporetto pass anyway, no need to use those shuttles, just hop on the correct vaporetto.

Murano has a retail outlet near San Marco Square-They sell almost everything they sell on the island--exception being the 20/25000 E

chandeliers. The "show" of glass blowing lasts about 10/15 minutes & then you are "free" to wander the store. Jack

Murano is interesting if you are in Venice for three days - whether you are planning to buy any glass or not. It has a whole different look than Venice. We didn't actually buy any glass, but enjoyed the island and the tour of a glass works, anyway (We took the vaporetto, not the free shuttle.)

I second the "buy a day vaporetto pass" comment. From there you have a couple of choices: You can get to Murano the long way, by taking Vaporetto #1 to San Zaccaria and then catching vaporetto #41 to Murano. This will take about an hour and a half, depending on the timing of the two vaporettos.

The other choice is to take Vaporetto #1 to Rialto (10 min), and walk across the slim part of the island (10 min) to the Fondamenta Nuova vaporetto stop and catch either #41 or 42 to Murano (10 min).

You will be docked somewhere around Plaza Roma. We saw Zenith there when we were vacationing last October. The link below will take you to a map of the vaporetto stops, so you can get a visual.

We took the vaporetto all the way around the island from San Zaccharia, (our hotel was near San Marco) but realized on the way back that it was much closer and faster to do as the poster above states--just walk (10 minutes) to the north side of the island and catch it at Ospidale (better where we were going) or Fondamente Nuova. Saves a lot of time.

We got off at the 2nd stop on Murano, and just up the street was a nice little cafe where we had a nice outdoor lunch for a reasonable price. Did a lot of X-mas shopping there!! (It was mid-November). Everyone loved their gifts from Italy.
