heylu Posted May 6, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 6, 2004 Hi everyone. I just purchased a Proctor Silex steamer for our June 20 Mariner cruise to the western caribbean. Have brought a travel iron in the past on a different ship, but everyone tells me it's easier with a steamer.I really did not like ironing on the bed. Does anyone know if an adapter is needed in the cabins for this (and hairdryer? Thanks
superjerryw Posted May 6, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 6, 2004 There are standard outlets in the cabin so no adapter is needed. However, the cruise lines generally prohibit irons due to the potential fire hazard. VABeach Posted December 13, 2004 #4 Share Posted December 13, 2004 You can't take the iron, it's a fire hazard.;) The laundry service is really cheap though.
MGoBlue2 Posted December 13, 2004 #5 Share Posted December 13, 2004 You can't take an iron about like you can't take booze on board.
TravelingTess Posted December 13, 2004 #6 Share Posted December 13, 2004 I've taken a travel iron on both my cruises and the cruise line didn't say a word. Not sure if I'll take one next time though, I never end up using it!

ERsecurity Posted December 14, 2004 #10 Share Posted December 14, 2004 We always carry a steamer for getting the wrinkles out after being in the suitcase. It is the best thing. It will plug into the standard outlets by the vanity or the TV outlet if it is handy. Good Luck....
Happy ks Posted December 14, 2004 #11 Share Posted December 14, 2004 A standard iron would be a fire hazard due to the high wattage of the appliance. A travel iron has much lower wattage and much less of a danger overloading the circuitry (sp). I think it is a common misconception that an iron is a danger because of being left on. We take a travel steamer and use it as we unpack, then pack it back into the suitcase. My travel iron doesn't get hot enough to iron cloth of any kind. I would love to be able to afford sending everything that needs it out for pressing, that sounds like heaven to me.
scarborough Posted December 14, 2004 #12 Share Posted December 14, 2004 Don't bother with the steamer from Oreck. I ordered it and it will not take out the wrinkles. Luckly it only cost me $12.00. It gives out "puffs" of steam rather than a constant release. I purchased a Conair and it seems to do a reasonably good job. Maybe others had better luck with their Oreck but I didn't. KamloopsCruisers Posted December 15, 2004 #13 Share Posted December 15, 2004 I've tried travel steamers and irons in the past - but no more since I discovered Downy Wrinkle Release (available at Target & Wal-Mart). Works like a dream. We're not able to buy it here in Canada, so when I travel state-side I stock up. In fact, I hardly use my iron here at home any more.
