Tango shows - which one??

Hi - we got in touch with Carlos and he gave us so much information to help us to book the"right" tour with him. We aren't having as much luck getting in touch with Christian(we have tried emailing late at night, early in am and in between - tried spelling name different, etc and still no luck).

Anyway, we are on to B.A. tango shows. Equina Carlos Gardel, La Ventana, El Querandi, Tango Porteno, and/or Gala Tango. They all sound like a fun time. With or without dinner ??? Any thoughts about the pro and cons on any of these shows would be oh so gratefully appreciated. Thanks so much for all your thoughts. Sue

The Buenos Aires forum of www.tripadvisor.com is replete with discussions about the various tango supper clubs. Naturally the opinions are all over the map. Some clubs get high marks for the meal (Esquina de Carlos Gardel), others for the show (Rojo Tango in the Faena Hotel). All are priced beyond the means of most locals (US$100 for dinner and show). Most have very limited menus.

Over the past 10 years I have been to almost all the shows. I recommend having dinner in a restaurant and paying only for the show. I recently saw the show at Madera Tango. It has good production values ( lighting, staging, costumes, etc) some real headliners, both dancing and singing ( Raul Lavie) and costs about $30 for the show only... a pretty good deal. You could dine at a San Telmo restaurant and be at the theatre in 10 minutes or less.

There is a less extravagant show (entry is 70 pesos or $20) of tango music and dancing every night at Cafe Tortoni. Call ahead to make reservations.

You might look up the Centros de Culturas - there's one in each neighborhood. We went to the Tango de Tierra show - no dinner - various shows with different names. It was not the glitzy tourist thing but it was incredible dancing, a powerful. moving performance by passionate local singers and dancers done in a very sophisticated way that left us in awe. And it cost about $15 a ticket. It's what the local Portenos go to when they want to see good tango.

hello,

We enjoyed Madero Tango in April of 2009. Transportation, dinner (with a bottle of wine) and show was not inexpensive but the food was great, excellent service and it was really nice having transportation to and from our hotel. They have a website and give you several options. Get seats in the middle of the room for best views.

HI,

All the suggestions are fine, and definitely a "do" if you have never seen Show A Tango. But, you should also take in some Tango as danced by the Porteños of BA and others around the world who have fallen in love with this beautiful, sensual dance. Attend a regular Milonga (open dance floor where Tango is danced) like those at Confitería Ideal, El Niño Bien, Salón Canning, and Club Gricel among many others. Here you will see the dance as it is meant to be danced socially. Pick up a copy of "BA Tango" at any of the shoe stores or hotels and that will show you where the various venues are. You could also take any "basic" lesson before hand so that you would understand more of what you are seeing.

Have a great time. We will be back in the city in November and are really looking forward to it!
