Yup, 4am i the morning, the Captain announces on the PA that they just picked up a stranded person. I don't have the details. But we are still making it into port in time. All I know is that this person brought the rain with him/her:eek:

you know with all the people complaining of nickel and diming on these boards...this is ONE HELLUVA way to get on board a cruise ship for free!!! (or is it?) would they charge him more than $12pp/day? surely that rescue requires a tip of some sort! furthermore...since he might not have appropriate attire, would said sailor be asked to dine only in the buffet or will they make an exception in the MDRs and Specialties? let's also speculate that maybe the sailor knew of a friend in the suites/penthouses...could they invite him to Cagney's for breakfast or lunch?

ok i'm teasing.

i've got some CC friends currently sailing this week to bermuda. some info:

Around 3:30AM a sailor (US citizen) was on his way to Bermuda from Miami. His engine and sail failed. He then made a distress call, the Coast Guard was informed. The Dawn was the closest ship. International law mandates that they respond. The weather conditions were inclement, winds of up to 40 knots, high seas and heavy rain. The Captain maneuvered the Dawn so that the sail boat was out of the wind and the rescue boat was lowered and picked up the sailor.

The sailor is in good condition and arrived at the US embassy once in Bermuda.

Saw the whole thing from my balcony on 11. Unbelievable...it was like watching a movie. The sailboat hit the Dawn 6 times after the sailor was rescued. It was like a feather hitting an elephant. The rescue was textbook.

Awesome story! Thank God that the Dawn was close by and rescued the poor guy. Imagine the feeling he must have had to see that awesome ship with Lady Liberty on the front, coming to his rescue?

Great, positive PR for NCL, too!

I wonder what happened to the sailboat - did they tow it to Bermuda or was it lost? THAT would have been quite a sight if it was towed!!

We were told that he had the choice to be rescued or stay with his boat because they were not rescuing the boat - he chose wisely. :) In Bermuda he was going to hire a recovery company to locate the boat and then he would basically "buy" the boat back from that company if and when found. No word yet that I know of on how that's going.

I imagine they bent the dress code rules for this person in the MDRs?

Good point! I was never aware of seeing him, but I am sure he didn't have much! I hesitate to comment on the status of the dress code enforcement (I have no interest in sparking another debate) but must say that at least 95% of the people I observed were dressed very appropriately.

PA announcement at 4am? I would have missed that one ;)

The way the boat was rockin' most of us were awake, I suspect. We were only half asleep and I had to get up to close our balcony door when it got really bad. I could tell that the captain had made two announcements, but without the TV on in the room, couldn't tell what he was saying (couldn't imagine!) but was trying way too hard to get back to sleep to learn anything useful until morning.

you know...that's another good point! if your tv isn't on...you won't hear the announcements on the PA system. i don't think the cabins are hardwired with speakers...correct?

That's right. And it took us a while to determine which channel on the TV to hear the announcements. You only hear them on the channel with the bridge reports if you have the volume turned up HIGH, at least that was true in our cabin, so if you are just flipping through the channels at a normal volume, you don't hear it.

ok...so it is confirmed. now for those in the suites/penthouses...is it true that your butler will gently tap you on your shoulder and whisper in your ear what the bridge updates are during the night? :D

The sailor was rescued very early Wednesday morning around 345 AM, and we docked at Heritage Wharf at 8 AM. I was told he was at the American consulate by 9 AM that morning. We were 50 nautical miles from Bermuda when we rescued him. As we pulled away, his sailboat floated into the distance. With that wind, I suspect it was better than 50/50 the boat capsized with no one aboard.

The rescue mission was handled very professionally.

Not correct. They are all hardwired. If it had been a real emergency everyone would have been blasted out of bed. Have you been in your cabin when the muster drill is announced. They just don't use them for regular announcements like bingo - thank god.

i guess i've always been on time for my muster drill. I JUST LOVE WEARING my PFD!!!

i guess that's the kicker...in the event of an emergency...otherwise it's the tv right?

That's correct. Good point - I wasn't thinking about emergency announcements - they definitely go into all the cabins. But the typical announcement, like Bingo :), you have to WANT to hear.

I would've been still up, in the casino, and begging the pit bosses to keep the blackjack table open for a little while longer.:D:p

Hey, how come cool crap like rescuing wayward sailors never happens when WE'RE on board? All that's happened to us was an NYPD helicopter buzzed the Gem in January... See below...
