ACEY/SAPPER/Cruisers(Difference between Market Square and the City market)

Recommended Posts

Hi ACEY & SAPPER

Can you tell me what is the Difference between Market Square and the city market? Also, If there are two different sightseeing tours of Saint John, One is somewhere around $17.00 and the other is somewhere around 39.00, would you guys know if one tour offers more than the other and where exactly do you get the bus in Saint John for the city highlights tour or the sightseeing tour, Do you walk to the right or left when you get off of the ship? Has anyone done either one of those tours and was it worth it? Just trrying to decide if I should pre-pay for a tour with Freedom tours or if I should just wait until I get into port & just go on one of the tours at the port? Are there other tours being offerred at the port by reputable tour guides? I know this was a long post, but it's amazing how the questions just keep popping up.. Thanks..

Hopefully I remember this right from my last trip and Deluxe French Fries haven't clouded my memory with grease....

City Market... http://www.sjcitymarket.ca/ is the old city market.

Market Square... http://www.marketsquaresj.com/ is a building on the waterfront with a mix or restaurants, stores and entertainment including the New Brunswick Museum.

The walk between them... http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=1+market+square&daddr=47+Charlotte+St,+St+John,+NB+(Saint+John+City+Market)&hl=en&geocode=%3BFdTTsgIdbQQQ_CFP0NnLkYLP9g&mra=ls&dirflg=w&sll=45.27383,-66.06117&sspn=0.004258,0.007564&ie=UTF8&ll=45.273437,-66.06107&spn=0.004258,0.007564&z=17

Here is a link to Saint John Transit and their sightseeing tour. The pickup point near the cruise docks is Barbour's General Store. It is across the street from Market Square. If you dock at Long Wharf, turn right when you leave the dock. Market Square is right in front of the Hilton.

If you dock at Pugsley turn left when you leave the dock and you will see Barbours General store on your right just before you get to Market Square. For those who remember it as being on the left, you are correct----it was moved last year.

I have provided links to both Aquila and Freedom tours which are local reputable companies. You may be able to schedule something with them but they are providers to the cruise lines and may be stretched to the limit with the ship's tours. It doesn't hurt to ask.

Market Square houses a collection of retail stores, restaurants, pubs, the NB Museum, Public Library, etc.

The Saint John City Market, if not the oldest market in North America, is pretty close to it. It houses stalls selling produce, crafts, baked goods, linens, great cubby hole type restaurants, meats, and is a gathering place for the locals. http://www.sjcitymarket.ca/ It is an easy walk from either dock.

There will be volunteers greeting you as you leave the ship and they will be able to answer questions for you and get you pointed in the right direction.

You can also enter the City Market from Germain Street.

If it is raining you can enter Market Square and walk through to the City Market in the Pedway system and stay dry.

Thanks for the info, can you walk to both the Market Square and the City market from the cruise ship of which I believe will be docking at Pugsley? Also, how far are the two locations from the cruiseship and just in case it is raining, can you walk to both using the covered walkway and how do you get to the walk way from the ship and how far is it from the ship? Lastly, the city tour that cost somewhere around $16.00, do they book out to the ships or can I book it on my own after we dock at Pugsley pier? Do I have a better chance of getting or doing the city tour if I book it with the ship.?

I think I would like to take a short bus tour around the city then walk to both markets if possible> . I hear there are escalators that are covered to shield one from the rain that will take you from the Market Square to the city market, is that true? How long of a walk is it to the markets? And are there other sights to see and visit that are close to the ship?

Both the city market and market square are a few blocks from ship and you can walk there in 5 to 10 minutes. You can walk in the indoor pedway system "inside connection" between market square and the city market, but it is not covered walking to the cruiseship. In the past the local port authority handed out umbrellas to the tourists to be returned when getting back on ship - not sure if they still do that. Other sites to see would in the immediate vicinity are Barbour's General Store, Loyalist Burial Ground with Beaver Fountain, Imperial Theatre, King's Square and the waterfront.

Thanks a bunch for all of the good information. I will definitely be taking your advice. One last question, do you know if we can prepay to take city sightseeing tour that cost somewhere around $16.00 or $17.00?

If you mean the City Transit tours, according to their website, everything is on a first come, first served basis.
