bdjam Posted December 22, 2004 #26 Share Posted December 22, 2004 As mentioned earlier we wont take the Sun Princess again. Its old, shows its wear and tear, has problems with non-drinking water systems (grease), Norwalk is rampant, a foul stench towards the back of the ship on deck 8, problems in the dining room and so on. Then when you return home and write Princess detailing the conditions of the cruise you get no answer. One person's opinion take it for whatever its worth! And I guess this is what I meant in my first response to the original poster. Given the ship is in the condition mentioned, and the fact it was in pristine condition when I was on board in March – no Norwalk (and we’ve already established that’s a passenger issue, not a ship issue), no grease in my toilet or shower, no foul stench at the back of the ship and no issues in the dining room. So, as I say, Princess must have stopped doing any maintenance on this ship.
spongerob Posted December 22, 2004 #27 Share Posted December 22, 2004 An opinion stated while grinding an axe has minimal credibility. I can't change the fact that your cruise didn't live up to expectations, but comments like "Norwalk running rampant" are uninformed and inflammatory - and minimize the validity of your other complaints. Norwalk is carried on by passengers and has, in my observation, been aggressively treated if it rears its ugly head. Every season has its Scrooge. swm54 Posted December 22, 2004 #28 Share Posted December 22, 2004 Call it whatever you wish. You obvioulsy have a positive opinion of the Sun Princess while I like to "tell it like it is". I do not apologize for being honest.
ahracer Posted December 22, 2004 #29 Share Posted December 22, 2004 Don't recall any news from CDC about a Norwalk outbreak recently on any ship let alone the Sun. Must not be too rampant. Scott
swm54 Posted December 22, 2004 #30 Share Posted December 22, 2004 Further no one is "grinding and axe" as you say. But when you spend between $6000 and $7000 for a 10-day cruise as we did you come to expect more than the Sun Princess has to offer.
alans Posted December 22, 2004 #31 Share Posted December 22, 2004 My wife and I disembarked on December 12 after having spent 10 days on the Sun. We had a thoroughly enjoyable cruise. I did not notice a lack of maintenance. In fact we ran into people doing scraping and painting many times. We prefer to concentrate on having a good time. DeRon Posted December 22, 2004 Author #32 Share Posted December 22, 2004 Although this is going to make some people mad, I am taking your opinion SWM54. I am not going to take the Sun. A stain here or there isn't the issue. But foul stenches, etc will keep me away.
DeRon Posted December 22, 2004 Author #33 Share Posted December 22, 2004 I think too many people say things like, "we prefer on concentrating on having a good time". Then why take Princess in the first place? Why not take the Viking Serenade like I did, and "concentrate on having a good time". When we are on the ship, we always make the BEST of it! But deciding what ship to go on, we ask a lot of questions and put a LOT of thought into it.

I think it unfortunate that you’re heeding a disgruntled passenger rather than the majority who have indicated here that Sun Princess is in fine shape, but it certainly doesn't make me mad. I think you're making a bad decision and you’re going to miss a fine vacation. I would suggest, however, that you pick another cruise line as Sun Princess is in no worse shape than the rest of the fleet. I guess they’ve all become rust buckets, huh? I was on Grand Princess a month after you were - personally, I think both ships were in fine shape, but if we want to nit pick, Sun Princess in March 2004 was in better condition than Grand Princess in October 2002 - the rug in my cabin had a stain. I really can't believe that SWM54 comments were the deciding factor for you. By the way I haven't been on any ship that a some point there wasn't a sewage smell emanating from somewhere. ldoc31 Posted December 22, 2004 #36 Share Posted December 22, 2004 Just got off the Sun this morning. Our first Princess cruise--no stains, no bad smells, no Norwalk virus. coiran Posted December 23, 2004 #38 Share Posted December 23, 2004 I have noticed on some past Sun Class ship cruises you get an odor in the aft on the Carib and Baja decks - It somehow emanates to here from the trash incinerators. Ron
coiran Posted December 23, 2004 #39 Share Posted December 23, 2004 I do have a complaint about the Sun - we were on it in February - the closet door in our cabin had a loose/broken hinge - It took them a half hour to get someonr up to fix it - I thought that this was intolerable - it should have been fixed before we arrived!!!! Gosh, I must just have fantastic luck on this ship…I had a shower control that wouldn’t allow hot water to come in. Just warm. Told the steward in the morning, it was fixed by noon. Maybe I should have sent a letter to Princess to demand my money back?

DeRon Posted December 23, 2004 Author #43 Share Posted December 23, 2004 It amazes me how hostile people get when you ask a question about the condition of a freakin' ship!! omg! lol  Guys, do not get upset. PLEASE. I love Princess cruises. Notice I have been on 2, and I have a marvelous time on both. And yes, I was considering sailing on the Sun, but her age and some of the the condition reports has made me seek something else. (The exact cruise in question, was the 10 day eastern caribbean.) (what the heck are these boards for if you can't ask a question like "what is the condition of a ship"????):o Thanks!
Eddie4Paws Posted December 23, 2004 #44 Share Posted December 23, 2004 Just got off December 12...The carpet in my cabin was new, all the furniture, etc. inside was in pristine condition. The tap water was fine to drink (no grease, no funny taste). The rest of the ship was beautiful. All the restaurants, bar areas, pools, casino, gym, disco/bars were in great condition. The crew was always cleaning, no dishes, dirty ashtrays, glasses, etc. to be found anywhee onboard. Not a single foreign object in any of the food/beverages. My only complaint was that the wooden deck chairs on the promenade deck (the only place on board with wooden deck chairs), were a little hard. But after a few days, my natural cushion got fluffier, and it wasn't a problem when I used them. :D Yes, there was an odor in the aft hallways, but it wasn't all the time and it wasn't insufferable. Ten days on-board and not a problem anywhere else. I would cruise the Sun again, in a heartbeat. However, preconceived ideas being what they are, and I guess it is nature to look for any problems. If you are expecting them, then by all means, cruise another ship where you will go with a positive mind and enjoy your vacation.

At 9:22am yesterday you posted on the Century thread that you were hearing the same thing about the Sun and were going to stick to newer ships. Yet you didn't post until last night on this thread that you were taking SWM's advice and not going to sail on the Sun. Clearly your mind was already made up but you wasted peoples time who answered your question seriously. I don't know why you are surprised about getting a hard time from some of us, because you got a hard time on the Century thread for the samething. Nobody is going take you seriously when you ignore 10 or so positive reviews and then jump all over the lone negative review. spongerob Posted December 23, 2004 #47 Share Posted December 23, 2004 DeRon, your question is a good one, it's just that different people have differing opinions as to what constitutes 'good shape'. You'll find comments about odors, stains, etc. on both brand new ships and older ships. Given the number of passengers any ship carries in a year, it's going to show signs of wear relatively quickly. I knocked over the flowers in our suite on the first cruise of Caribbean Princess, and it left a small stain. Wear and tear, 3 days into the service life. Anyway, it's your call whether or not to sail a particular ship. I might suggest looking back at the previous posts of those who offer opinions to get a sense of how balanced their comments might be. If I'd believed some of the comments about Grand Princess the first time I booked her, we might not have gone. We're going back for a fourth cruise on that ship in just a few days. I think there's a lesson in that.

My cruise on the Sun next month is only costing me about $1,400 ... and I'm sailing single occupancy! As for spots on carpets, etc. ... my feeling is that with all those passengers coming and going on the ship, there are bound to be spills and such. I'm amazed that many of these ships are in the great shape they are ... and that's a tribute to the crew that is constantly cleaning and polishing all day long. I for one am looking forward to my cruise on the Sun next month and hope many of these horror stories I've heard about the Sun are not quite as bad as they sound. Seems her cabin must have been located in the area of the ship where the bakery is situated. She said every so often the aroma of freshly baked bread would waft into her cabin. Yummy! I should be so lucky. :) Blue skies ... --rita
