Gaspe

Recommended Posts

We have a port stop in Gaspe which is a tender port. HAL offers a number of long excursions out of town; mostly to Pierce. We generally do ship excursions, don't drive in ports, and take half day excursions unless something is really "must see". They do offer one walking tour in Gaspe. Would this be worthwhile? Is there anything at or near the tender pier? There doesn't seem to be much information on this city.

Gaspé is a pretty town, but very "resorty". Percé is the must-see in the area, but it's still just a big rock with a hole in it.

Generally, both towns are pretty, sleepy, seaside towns. You'll find a good restaurant if you look.

Percé is the name of the rock, it means pierced. Big rock, big hole only reason most people go to Gaspé. Unless you really want to see highway signs that point at the highway in both directions and say west.

The area does have a rich history... The Acadian French deported from Nova Scotia in 1756 and then the Loyalists in 1784. If you look hard you can see reflections of both those time periods including old churches. I think there is a Gaspésian British Heritage Village. Certainly the name of some of the towns are in English, like New Richmond and New Carlisle. New Carlisle's claim to fame is the boyhood home of Rene Levesque, who was actually born in New Brunswick.
