They don't have any trouble, the only thing is the road before you reach to Altun Ha. It is dirt road which takes about 1 hour. However, you will not feel anything because you will be in the van .

About the walking you should have a tennis shoe or any shoes which has a comfortable sole that will make you relax when you walk and a cap on your head for shade from the sun .

There are places en route to Altun HA where you can rest and take it easy and places for shopping. ;)

There are plenty of vendors there. YOu should be able to knock off 30 to 40% off the prices. There are two pyramids that you can climb. The larger of the two is really great!

For the Altun Ha Ruins (and the Zoo and other stops) we highly recommend Margaret Montero who owns Belize Exclusive (along with her partner Desmond Tillet), email: mdstourstravel1@yahoo.com and please mention that Chris and Agatha from New Jersey sent you to her. Go to: http://www.*****/tours.html then scroll to the bottom of the page.

The actual Altun Ha Excursion is 3-1/2 hours (Altun Ha is located 32 miles from Belize City on the northern road which usually takes between 50 and 60 minutes to get to Altun Ha). The prices quoted were $30 USD per person (group of 7 or more) OR $33 USD per person (1 to 6 people). The entrance fee to Altun Ha is included in these prices (there is a credit card service charge of 5% if payment is made that way). It also includes $5 USD per person Belize Tourism charge.

Margaret met us where the tender drops you off at the pier. She was standing near the gate with a sign with our group name on it and she was parked just around the corner. The van was a late model Ford with air conditioning. They also have a second larger van for really big groups and for emergency backup. Inside the van she has a large cooler with complimentary water and sodas.

With Margaret as our guide, she took us past many local sights and explained all about Belize and its people and customs. She was also our personal guide at the ruins. On the way back she helped us to find reasonably priced local cashew wines and was willing to do whatever it took to make our stay in Belize memorable. In short, she was GREAT!!! Our party of eight was so happy with her that we tipped her an additional $40 above and beyond the cost of the tour.

We cannot give a higher recommendation. ~Chris

Just returned this week from a cruise and the pier in Belize has lots of shopping and if you wander further into town you will find the local vendors or flee market that you talk about. We did the 4/1 hour city tour and Altun Ha excursion with the ship. It was on a full air conditioned coach with big windows and comfortable seating and included a rum punch or beer at the end of the tour. There are several places within the site at Altun Ha for your friend to sit and take it easy. Picnic table or bench and plenty of trees to stand under to get out of the sun. If you go on an organized tour they will talk for most of the time that you are there and guide you. It is not a fast paced tour so he will be able to walk slow and keep up with the crowd.
