Embarkation - Getting in Cabin

This will be a ridiculously stupid or simple question for all those of you who have cruised in the past, but we've been only on one cruise some time ago. How do you know when you can get in your cabin? Are keys/card keys issued when you board and they make an announcement?

Thanks!

I am one of those that likes to be one of the first ones on the ship. Luckily we have not had to wait too long for our cabin, if at all. Otherwise, yes. It will be announced.

Have a great cruise.

On the Gem last week key cards were issued as we boarded. I actually don't know how you are supposed to know when the room is ready. We sat in the salon having champane for a while, then eventually just drifted up to our cabins and they were all ready. It wasn't more than an hour after we boarded and we were among the first on the ship.

My mother and I cruise together and we love to be on early. Once we were # 1 and # 2 boarding - it was on Carnival.

Call me crazy - but I get so excited - there is so much to see and do - I like to get on the ship and start checking it out immediately. I have a friend who likes to waltz on right at the last minute. (She usually stays at a hotel in walking distance to the port so she is not "chancing anything".) We couldn't be more different. Like I said, she thinks I am crazy!!!

Like DMH15, we also like to get the vacation started and want to get on board and start exploring. And there is nothing like getting in your room/cabin to start feeling a bit more settled and - well, anchored, to make a bad pun. That's when it really starts to feel like we're on vacation!

Thanks also for the tip that the rooms are usually ready about 1:30-2:00, as I can just see us still sitting and waiting as darkness falls, sure they're going to make that announcement really soon. On the other hand, I know the stewards have a tough job getting all the ready for the incoming passengers and I don't want to make their job any harder by getting in the way. Since the keys are issued as you board and everyone knows what their room assignment is, I'm actually kind of surprised they haven't experienced people trying to get in their room immediately.

My best friend and I couldn't be any more different in this respect either. LOL

She's always the very last person to arrive "anywhere" and I am always nearly the first. I hate being late for anything........I was almost born in the hospital elevator. :D

That said, I married someone just like my friend...........he waits till the very last minute to get dressed and I am usually waiting at the door tapping my feet, watching him put his shoes on....ugh the agony! ....especially on "cruise day". ;)

Can you get into your room any sooner if you are in a penthouse?

Yes. We just finished a cruise on the Jade in a Penthouse. We checked in around 12:30 and were escorted directly to the room. I got the impression that the concierge level rooms are given priority preparation since they have someone escort you to the room and don't know when you'll arrive.

Thank you for that, this is my first NCL cruise and I am excited for it to begin!
