lori68 Posted August 12, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 12, 2009 Does anyone know how to prevent that nasty red mark/ indent across the forehead from wearing a snorkel mask? I'm sure it's from too tight a strap, but if i don't tighten it, it leaks. Any suggestions?
Friscorays Posted August 12, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 12, 2009 As you say, strap is too tight. If your mask has a good seal, it should keep water out without being overly tight, a suction type effect. If the seal is not good enough, time for a new mask (or live with the red marks like I do :)).
Islandbear Posted August 12, 2009 #3 Share Posted August 12, 2009 Preventing Red Marks: Inspect the mask for crack or tears. Remove the strap from the mask. Soak the mask in mild dish soap and warm water. Lightly clean all surfaces with a soft cloth. Rinse in cold water and let soak over night. Replace water and soak again. Air dry mask. Wipe all surfaces with white vinagar. Rinse in cold water and let soak over night. Air dry mask. Remove any sand particules lodged between the len & mask body. Dip mask in "Hot" tap water for 5 minutes. When mask cools to the touch, place lens down on news paper to dry. Gentley massage the edges of the mask while drying. Wrap mask in news paper and discard. Go to local dive shop for a new mask that fits! :p

sunseeker09 Posted August 14, 2009 #6 Share Posted August 14, 2009 Very cute Islandbear. ;) Yes, sounds like your mask doesn't fit right. Before buying the mask I currently have I must have tried on about 20.
oldmedic Posted August 29, 2009 #7 Share Posted August 29, 2009 you might loosen your strap a little, and use some vaseling gel where the mask leaks at the seal point..... worked for me, but i have a full beard...(apply the vaseline to the skin, not the mask)
travelbugs Posted September 3, 2009 #8 Share Posted September 3, 2009 When you have your mask on underwater, try letting a little bit of air go through your nostrils into the mask to help equalize it. I've seen some very bloodshot eyes from divers that don't know to do this.
