Car Rentals in ports of call on the POA

Has anyone had better luck with one rental company over the other when renting cars on your own? I've heard some companies aren't as reliable with pick-up at the harbor etc. We'll be renting for both days in Maui, Hilo, and Kaui. Thanks for the opinions!

Also, since we'll be off the ship for all noon meals I've heard "box lunches" are available. Does anyone know how these work? Who to contact etc.

Budget was the best for us. They had free shuttles at the ports and were always there waiting for us.

If you will go to the ports of all, Hawaii, you will see many topics of discussion regarding rental cars in the various ports. They also list some websites that have discount rates, and tips for speeding up the process of check in by joining the frequent renters program of various companies. As I understand it, if you are not currently a member of a frequent renter program but join now, you may have to fill out a form at Maui, but then not again in the other ports. Your car will just be waiting for you. My daughter does this alot and says there will be a bulletin board in the parking lot telling you what car is assigned to you and you just get in it and go. Therefore there is a benefit of using the same company in each port.

Also read as many reviews as possible. People reviewing will usually mention the company from which they obtained their rental, so you can get a good idea.

Likewise, they will give you tips about where to park your car overnight free of charge and what is a good hour to get to the lot to be assured of this!

Thrifty worked best for us!

Same for us in 2006. Our son just used them this past May also!! Be sure to apply for Blue Chip membership (free and done online) to help save time when picking up your car at ports!
