Help!!! Train to Berlin?

Hi we're leaving on Sunday on the HAL Rotterdam. We should be in Warnemunde next Thursday but want to train to Berlin on our own since we're pretty experienced travelers. But we're struggling with timing and logistics

 

1. how close is the train station to the port? How long does it take? What is the best way to get there?

 

2. what is the best stop to get off at--the online train booking system (we're trying to do in advance) gives several options and we can't determine the best one.

 

 

Also what are the best off beat things to do???

 

I know we're cutting it close but want to give it a shot!

The best place of origin is just Warnemünde (just confirm without changes)

The best place of destination is Berlin Hbf (= Hauptbahnhof = Central Station - 15 minutes walking to Brandenburg Gate/Reichstag or 2 stops by subway in 5 minutes)

 

Buy as soon as possible to get high-discounted tickets!!! Sales ends three days ahead of day of travel. 49.00 EUR one way for 2 persons in ICE High-Speed-train:

 

 

The last ROTTERDAM-cruiser I met were 06.15 hrs already at train station.

 

 

The 06.58 hrs train is before 10.00 hrs in Berlin.

 

 

And return 18.12 hrs from Berlin and back in Warnemünde 20.44 hrs...

Wow, so that was the exact intinerary we were going to do:) And now you showed us what it looks like! In photos! I'll read up on the neat things to do and let us know if you're around, we'll buy you a coffee or a beer:)

Thank you to HienBloed who gave us step by step instructions for our trip from Warnemunde to Berlin. Not only was our modern, high speed ICE train faster but it was $100 pp cheaper than what the cruise line offered into downtown. The cruise train was old and slow or so we heard and then everyone was put on a bus just like we did on our own.

 

We went right into Berlin central station, purchased a HOHO bus ticket from the info center in the station (not the one HeinBloed recommended unfortunately) and went on our way. Literally saw everything we wanted and had an hour to spare. We found a sandcastle contest right near the river that runs past the station as well as a contemporary art museum that had free entry to kill time and experience life beyond the tourist attractions. Only regret was that I didn't see more of east berlin--HOHO doesn't really want you to, I think. The development in Berlin is really a sight to be seen.

 

We gifted our 24 hour HOHO tickets to some students arriving at the station and were back on the train and arrived in Warnemunde with time to grab ice cream and walk down to the water and enjoy that town too. A long day but a great one.

It's too early to make any plannings.

 

Would suggest to start in December when new train schedules are released.

 

Then you can compare all options:

 

ship's tour

private tour

ship's train

public train

car rental

 

and Berlin is changing so fast... today's recommendation could be totally outdated in next year...

 

For anticipation reasons you can visit THE PLACES (see signature).

 

There you can see what was this year "in": 20th anniversary of turn down of wall...

Just wanted to thank Heinbloed for the help on our Baltic Cruise. We took the train from Warnemunde to Wismar, with his help, and had a wonderful day!!. You give such great help to those of us trying to go it on our own. Thanks for taking the time to help.
