Adjusting graduity to maitre d

Can somebody tell me what EXACTLY the matre d does? He has to do something....why would he even be around??? Never saw him on our cruise. Does he work in other places on the ship like the servers do??:confused:

I thought Carnival charged $10 a day for tips!!!

$ 5.50 Per Day Dining Room Services

$ 1.00 Per Day Alternative Services: distributed to other kitchen and hotel service staff

 

This totals to $10 and is what the $5.50 in the OP's post is referring to. Hope this helps!
