Alaska - Vision of the Seas

Recommended Posts

congrats on your frist cruise! this is going to be the beginning of a life long obsession with cruising! and alaska is the perefect first cruise! once you experience alaska you'll be forever spoiled!

the average age of alaska cruises, i would think is probably in their late 30's-early 40's. but having said that, its probably not a fair assumption. alaska attracts a lot of cruises from all age groups. there are a lot of families with young kids and teens that travel alaska, and a lot of middle age couples that travel and all the other age groups in between. alaska certainly isn't as "young" as the caribbean or the mexican riviera, but thats probably because alaska isn't really know as a "party" destination as the other 2 locations are. and probably the fact that most cruises start out from the pacific northwest is a bit of a deterrent price wise for people flying in from out of state. but all in all you should find a little of every age group on board.

if you want to do some fun things in Alaska, make sure to stop by the Red Dog Saloon in Juneau and the Red Onion Saloon in Skagway if your ship stops there. Also take a walk through Creek Street in Ketchikan.

if you like adventure and can afford it, do a helicopter tour either of Mendenhall glacier in Juneau or a helicopter tour in Skagway. Or maybe consider a dog sledding or a bear watching excursion. and if you like nature, don't forget a whale watching tour in Juneau!

whatever you do in Alaska though, you won't regret it. at the end of the trip you'll be wishing it wasn't coming to an end so soon!

enjoy!

jstducky!

Hi, I am on the Vision in Alaska on 6/4. It is my 4th Alaska sailing, the 2nd with RCI.

I was on the Rhapsody in 1998 with 3 other single women. There were only a handful of singles aboard and the nightlife was no where near that of a Caribbean sailing. 75% of the passengers were seniors and there were only a few kids aboard. We had balcony cabins which were a real treat and worth the extra money IMO for this route.

I was also on NCL to Alaska in 2002 and 2003. There were quite a few more kids aboard their ships and I imagine that was due to the month - June - and the pricing. The crowd was still predominantly seniors. I sailed solo both times and was pretty much on my own.

However, I imagine if you chose Alaska it is for the scenery and the experience, not the social aspect.

I suggest you do the White Star railway in Skagway and, if you are like me and enjoy a good cup of coffee (not what most ships do best) there is a great little place in Skagway called the Haven Cafe that delivers a great cup of java.

I always bring back salmon because it is so wonderful there and Anchorage has a nice store near the area where the cruise ships dock.

We also chartered a small plane and pilot on our own and had a wonderful flight over the glaciers.

Cruising is terrific and you will surely have a great time!

hello and welcome!
I agree with justducky....you will be obessed with cruising and Alaska is the perfect place to start.

You will find a huge variety of ages on every cruise, not to worry. If you haven't signed up for the "Meet and Mingle" it would be a great place to meet others before you go. You may find other singles there or others your age.

We did Alaska on the Vision in '02. It was the best!!! The Vision is a great ship, lots of open space, windows and places for viewing. The crown and anchor lounge was always open and our favorite place to relax.

IF you have any questions, please ask.
