  1. Food Republic and Pinchos are not part of the SDP. They are a la carte and you will have to pay in addition to the SDP.

While Food Republic is definitely not on the SDP, Pincho's can be, for the cost of one SDP meal PLUS $7.

While the upcharge at Bayamo is totally worth it, we decided against using the SDP at Pincho's. We went instead on a day when we had had a late lunch, and only wanted to share a few plates. It was FANTASTIC and I do suggest you go.

Do the math when you are there - if you don't plan on eating more than $60 a la carte, don't use your SDP.

  2. Here is the problem with that, I am trying to figure out the same thing. I have Verizon as well called yesterday.. IF you are in airplane mode Wifi is off as well. You turn airplaine mode off and someone texts you its .05 cents per text and .50 if u reply. Calls u just dont have to answer. They gave a option to block texts during the trip. I am in a few group messages which i cant stand will cost me a fortune and completly out of my control.

Not sure how it works on all phones, but try turning airplane mode on. Then manually turn on wifi, then try and text.

You can turn wifi on while the phone is in airplane mode. It then blocks all calls/texts as usual. You can then use wifi as normal.

  4. OK, so apparently I can use the fb messenger thru wifi, but I would only have wifi on, data off,and airplane mode?? (I have Verizon) I would only buy the smallest wifi plan, I am not really going to do much internet, I don't think,yet.....[emoji14] Thank you for the response!

Yes. Keep in mind that you will only receive messages when you are signed into the wifi. Make sure you log off, or else your "smallest wifi plan" would soon run out of minutes.

  5. So if I want to keep in touch at home via text I can use an app like WhatsApp through wifi ? Just as confused =/

If you and the person you wish to message both have WhatsApp, then yes, you can message them using the ships wifi.

Personally, I inform the one or two people I intend to keep in contact with that I will be using Facebook messenger only.

On case of an emergency, those who need it know my ships name and how to contact through that.

  6. The app is FREE. You do not pay for the app. You only pay for the messaging feature if you want to activate that. Otherwise, use of the app (e.g., to check activities, your account, reservations, etc.) is FREE.

Thank you for clarifying my point. Yes, the app is free, and you can and should download before you get to the ship. The messaging function is for paying customers only.

  7. I'm in a similar situation and also confused. Let me see if I understand y'all.

So, in order for 3 of us to text one another or use an app like Skype to see where each other is on the ship, we'll need 3 internet packages and get with our carrier for international rates and compatibility (We are Verizon)?

    Yes and no.

Text - Done through your carrier. Extremely expensive at sea.

Skype (Facetime/WhatsApp/etc) - Done through an Internet connection or data. Each device will require an Internet connection through the ship.

iConcierge - A Norwegian special app that will allow a device, for a one time fee of ~$9, to message any other device that has also downloaded and paid for the app.

  8. Is that 10 per device a DAY or the duration?

Also, if I have 3 devices going and they are all on my ATT account. Can we text one another, while in the middle of the ocean, if we turn on airplane mode?

No. Text is typically unavailable and if your carrier does have signal, it will be outrageously expensive.

If you would like to message between 3 devices onboard, it will cost ~$9 per device for the week for iConcierge. Ensure you keep the app running in the background to make sure messages come in.

I would look at Internet packages, as others have suggested. Apps like WhatsApp or Skype (voice only) can be used to "telephone" others with the app like a phone call. Unless you prearranged with AT&T for foreign country rates, I highly suggest leaving the phone in airplane mode with only the wifi turned on.

This comes from a Canadian who until recently didn't have a good USA plan/rate.

  9. If you don't want to walk to DT Miami over the bridge, there is also a free trolley that picks up at POM and does a small loop downtown. It's 2nd (or 3rd?) stop after POM is right at one of the free Metro mover stations. Easy connections.

Did it last October from POM to FLL.

  10. Like was said above, research the options and cost of each dining option on your ship. Menus can be found fairly easily online ahead of time for research ideas. Once onboard, it can be worth a trip in the morning to the venue itself to check out what is for dinner that night. The MDRs in particular, as it can be tough to guess online ahead of time.

Reservations can be made in advance for most. Personally, when travelling in a large group, we like having reservations so we all have somewhere to meet up for the night, and to discuss our days. When I travel in pairs or solo, I only usually reserve the "must-dos" on my list, and Teppanyaki (it is limited seating, so tends to book up quickly).

If you have decided against reservations, know that a short wait is likely, so you don't go in with unreasonable let expectations. There are electronic boards around the ship that show how busy or popular a venue is - use them! Worst case scenario, you are never far from a bar (in fact, many restaurants have one eight by the door). Get a pager, then relax with a cocktail and people (or ocean) watch!

  11. I let it up to my husband to carry the cards...but in all seriousness, no lanyards for us (yuck)....pockets and if no pockets, then stuff them somewhere...top, bottom...where ever ;)

"Stuff them somewhere" is far more "yuck" to me than a lanyard. But to each their own

Personally, I will often carry mine tucked between the pages of a book. When I sail solo, and even when I'm with friends/family, I am rarely seen without a book.

This thread makes me want to find a cute jewelled one for my upcoming trip though... I've got some ideas where to shop too! Thanks all!!

  12. I second South Beach! Lots of great little hotels on Ocean Drive. Super expensive compared to FLL, but if you've never done it, worth a go!

I love drinks/lunch on Ocean Deive for the people watching. Renting bikes to check out the whole of the beach first thing in the morning. Lincoln road for dinner and window shopping. Lots to see and do!

  13. Most servers will give you the heads up around drink 13, particularly if you get to know then, and/or add an extra tip in on previous drinks. Then you can pay cash so you don't go over 15, as yes, they can't pour even cash drinks over 15.

On sea days, I would often pay cash for afternoon pool beers, as they are cheaper than my evening wine or cocktails.

  14. I'm with all the others who say follow the golden rule and you shouldn't have any problems with a server. But often I sail to celebrate a birthday that doesn't necessarily fall ON the cruise due to many reasons. If we want (and pay for) a cake then, who cares? Now if I'm trying to scam a free cake, well that's another story...
