  1. Hello

We will be on the Eclipse which arrives at Berth S167 Stadsgarden on 17th June, arriving at 08.00 departing at 16.00 althoght we would need to be back on board by 15.00.

We would like to take a leisurely walk around the Gamla Stan and visit the Storkyrkan.I particularly like views so would like to go up the tower if possible.

Is the open top bus (assuming the weather was OK) a good way of seeing other parts of Stockholm and do they run at frequent intervals?

From the map it looks as though Gamla Stan is around a 20 minute walk.Is a bus which we could take from the quay?

    Thank you for your advice.

    Charles

You will be in Stockholm on June 17 and that may cause a bit of a problem. On June 19 the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria will take place in Storkyrkan. I very much doubt that you will be able to visit the chuch. And there may be other security arrangements around Gamla Stan. I am not familiar with the exact program but it is likely that there will be a lot of security around Storkyrkan and the Royal Palace just two days before the wedding.

It is correct that Stadsgården dock is a 20-30 minutes walk from Slussen, at the south end of Gamla Stan. There are several buses that pass near the dock that would take you to Slussen. In fact I think they all go there, but to be sure ask the driver.

If you want a view the tower at the Town Hall is an alternative. Or at Slussen take the Katarinahissen lift up to Södermalm. It will give you a nice view.

  2. Question ~ I noticed on one of the maps a restaurant/café FAFNGAN. I can find only a little information on-line. Is it possible to continue walking along Folkungagatan and turn right (instead of going down to the ship) and reach the cafe? It’s hard to tell on the map if its walkable. Do you know anything about the café? Would it be possible to walk to the ship? Would cabs be available?

When you walk Folkungagatan towards the ship you walk downhill so that when you reach the main road out of Stockholm you are almost down at quay level. Fåfängan is on another cliff, so there is a steep climp up some stairs to reach the cafè. There is no public transport that can take you up there. The place is most known for the beautiful view.

Here is a link to their information, which is only in Swedish. But I think you can guess what "fotogalleri" means and find their pictures, the panorama pictures gives a good idea of the place.

  3. One further clarification. I want to see La Mano on Katarinavagen. Does Bus 3 from City Hall travel along Katarinavagen to get to Tjarhorsplan?

If so, what stop do I get off to see La Mano.

Then I plan to walk to Fjallgatan and follow the route you mentioned above(Erstagatan/Folkungagatan) to pier 167.

Originally I was going to take metro to Slussen from city hall and then walk Katarinavagen to La Mano, but from the post I see that the bus is better than the metro. I just wanted to make sure that Bus 3 would get me there.

I do want to see the Art in the Metro that has been publicized. Which station do you think would be the best to get a taste of the Art in the Metro?

Thanks. We are leaving for the cruise in a few days- Can hardly believe the time is so near!

Bus 3 does come up Katarinavägen and you should get off at Tjärhovsplan and walk back down Katarinavägen. Bus 3 used to have a stop named Glasbruksgatan very close to La Mano, but it has not stopped there lately.

And Ultime Thule has already said that the best Metro line to see the art is the blue line.

  4. north-bound:

I have another question about the walk from the pier dock to the blue bus stop 3. Why do you turn right on Erstgatan off of Folkungagatan instead of continuing on Folk.... to Renstiemas Gata? Then to Bus 3 stop at Tjarhovsplan.

    Thank you.

Ultima Thule has already answered your question. The reason not to take Folkungagatan, which of course would be slightly shorter, is that I sincerely recommend seeing Fjällgatan, a wellknown sight in Stockholm. Interesting old houses and a splendid view over the city. To anyone being in that area, don't miss Fjällgatan!

  5. north-bound:

Thank you so much for the information. I'm on the Star Princess June 2010. That was exactly the info I needed. Could you also tell me how you put the blue line on the Google Map? This would be a great tool for me to know for other uses.

    Thanks again.

You have to be logged in and then you can design your own maps with adding lines and other information. The information how to do it will be there once you start "design a new map".

  6. Its possible to walk without problems over

Question to people with knowledge of Södermalm. Is it worth taking bus #3 all the way to Tjärhovsplan and then try to find the way down the 100 feet cliff to the Stadsgården quay?

I can definitely recommend the walk from the bus stop at Tjärhovsplan down to the ship at Stadsgården.

From the bus stop cross the street and walk a few steps back towards the sea. There is a small staircase up to Fjällgatan, one of the most charming streets we have in Stockholm. On one side there are very nice old houses and on the other a great view over Stockholm. At the end of Fjällgatan turn right down Erstagatan to Folkungagatan, where you turn left. This street will take you down towards the ship.

Here is a map of the recommended walk down: http://maps.google.se/maps/ms?client=firefox-a&hl=sv&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=100446628536787947860.000486f302393ee8c6554&t=h&z=15

  7. I keep reading about the old homes in Djurgarden..are they talking about Skansen or is there a different area with old homes in Djurgarden? If so, is there transportation from Vasa?

    Thanks for your help.

    Pmat

I am not sure what you refer to, but it may be the buildings inside the Skansen museum. Skansen is a fairly large area where old buildings from many Swedish regions have been brought together. During the season, when you enter a building, there will often be someone inside dressed as the owner once would have been. This is a guide who can tell you more about the building and life inside it.

Since Skansen is a place with a lot to see it is a good idea, if you decide to go there, to think a bit about what you want to do there.

Here is alink to find out more; http://www.skansen.se/pages/?ID=221

  8. Ok I figured it out. We are docking at Frihamnen. Do I understand correctly that we should take the bus 76to Djurgarstron to stop at Vasa museum. Then get on the hoho boat to get to Gamla stan. Then bus 76 back to Frihamnen?

That is a good way to go if you are docked in Frihamnen. July 10 is a Saturday, this bus runs on Saturday but not on Sunday. Remember that you can not pay the bus driver, you have to buy som kind of ticket at the info shop on the quay before walking to the bus stop.

Here is a link to a map that may be helpful: http://maps.google.se/maps/ms?client=firefox-a&hl=sv&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=100446628536787947860.000448dadb8bebb56f079&ll=59.327717,18.096457&spn=0.025264,0.04858&t=h&z=14

  9. "I think it should be possible to turn right when coming out from Vasa and then follow the side of museum to the small boat harbor and then along the harbour out to Alkärret road and follow the tram tracks along Falkenbergsgatan to Allmänna Gränd but I have never walked the middle part of the route myself, so I would like some with local knowledge to confirm."

Yes, I was wondering if there was a short-cut.:p

Wish I could figure out that quote thing!

Yes Ultime Thule is right. You don't have to go back to the main road, you can walk along the water.

To quote, just press the "quote" button at the bottom of the post you want to quote.

  10. Thanks.

From what I've seen and researched, it just seems very pretty. I'll be different from the city walks and museum touring we plan to do in other ports.

Have you been to Stockholm before? If so I may understand that you want to do something different.

But if not it seems very strange to want to leave the city to spend your time in a park. Stockholm is a beautiful city, and most cruise passengers who have been on a Baltic cruise seem to rate St Petersburg, Copenhagen and Stockholm as the most interesting cities.

It is not to critisize your decision, it just seems so difficult to understand.

  11. Hi,

My understanding is that it starts at Nybroplan at 11:45, guards cross over Noorbro Bridge, ending at the palace. I read that the guards arrive at the Palace at 12:15 (1:15 on Sundays and Holidays)? When does the ceremony end?

The guards march from The Army Museum (near Nybroplan) and arrive at 12.15 (1.15 on Sundays). That is when the ceremony starts. The ceremony itself is short but at least during the summer months it is usually followed by a marching concert by the escorting army music. And that is what most people come for. I think the whole thing at the palace could take one hour.

  12. I have 4 people in our group. Rather than purchasing 4 travelcards (400 SEK) could we just purchase a strip of 16 (180 SEK)to cover the following trips? Can the tickets be used for the ferry?

The strip has 16 coupons. You will need 2 coupons per person on the bus in the morning and again 2 per person when going back to the ship. So that would be covered by the 16 strip. But a coupon strip cannot be used on the ferry. The cost for a ticket on the ferry is 40 kronor per person. So the total cost would be 180 kronor plus 160 kronor. A little less than the travel card, which covers unlimited public transport, including the ferry from Slussen.

I think that the info shop will have coupon strips as well as travel cards. Neither can be bought at the ticket machines, only individual tickets that would be more expensive. And only if you have Swedish coins or a credit card that works, some cards issued in another coutry will not work.

  13. One more question if you don't mind - is the Royal Armory the same as the King Gustav III Museum of Antiquities??

No, as Ultima Thule has already answered it is not at all the same. There is little reason to see the museum of Antiquities, just a few old statutes that really have nothing to do with Stockholm. In my mind the palace rooms are not all that interesting either, but that may be just my opinion.

If you would be interested in another museum very close to the palace there is the Museum of Medieval Stockholm. It is located on the same small island as the parliament building, under the bridge that goes straight north from the palace. Here is a link:

    http://www.medeltidsmuseet.stockholm.se/index.php?sprak=english

  14. Floridafolks; From Slussen it is possible to walk up Katarinvägen towards Fjällgatan. La Mano is near the top of Katarinavägen, so not at the Slussen end. If you are on the way back to the ship at Stadsgården you walk along Fjällgatan, at the end of Fjällgatan turn right into Erstagatan and then left down Folkungagatan towards the ship.

Fjällgatan does have a lovely view of Stockholm on one side. And very nice old hoses on the other.

Should you want to extend the walk a bit and make it even more interesting, take the lift Katrinahissen up from Slussen and walk in towards Mosebacke torg, a pleasant little square. From there take a few steps up into Fiskargatan and you will be in an area with narrow cobblestone streets and small old wood houses here and there. You will have to make it down a bit to see La Mano in Katarinavägen, there are stairs here and there.

  15. We've seen the Changing of the Guard (on Princess Victoria's birthday in 2008!) but have never been inside the Palace. I've gotten information on their web site about times and prices but wonder if they ever run-out of tickets? I can't find any where to order tickets in advance (as Buckingham Palace). I have E-mailed a question but have not received an answer yet.

We'd like to see at least the Royal Apartment and Gustav III´s Museum of Antiquities - I understand there's a combination ticket.

One reason there are never a lot of people going inside palace could be that it is not very much to see. It cannot be compared to what you see in other palaces in Europe.

But there is one museum inside the palace that is more interesting, at least in my mind, and that is Livrustkammaren (The Royal Armoury). This museum tells us things about how our royals lived through the centuries. Here is a link so that you can have a look what it is about

  16. Thanks for taking the time to answer everyone's questions!!

We will be arriving from the US at the main airport and will be staying downtown at the Hotel Riddargatan. What would be the cost (in US dollars) for both my husband and I for the cab ride to downtown and do you know anything about this hotel? I understand that there will be a medical convention in town and it was very very difficult to find a room for Aug. 27th!!

Good news is you don't need a taxi to get to downtown - you already are downtown. The Vasa museum (if you want to go there) is in one direction from the hotel, and Gamla Stan in another direction.

Here is a link to a map where you can see the location of some main attractions. If you try a seach for "Hotell Riddargatan" you will see where the hotel is. http://maps.google.se/maps/ms?client=firefox-a&hl=sv&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=100446628536787947860.000448dadb8bebb56f079&ll=59.334153,18.090019&spn=0.050343,0.099907&t=h&z=13

  17. How can I find our where our ship will be docking on August 22nd?

    Thank you.

Did you mean on August 26? On that date Connie is booked at Stadsgården. But remember that changes do happen, even at last minute. So check again just before you leave for the cruise. Here is a link to Ports of Stockholm:

  18. north-bound,

Thanks for your help. I did not realize you would need a guided tour for the City Hall. Will have to rethink that.

Using bus 76 from ship, what is the stop to get off for the Vasa Museum? Then do we get back on bus 76 to go to the Palace and Gamla Stan or do we ride a ferry?

Do you recommend the Noble Peace Museum or Skansen?

    Thanks for all your help!

The name of the stop is Djurgårdsbron. Ask the driver to tell you when to get off. From there it is a short walk across a bridge and on to the museum.

Personally I love Skansen if the weather is nice. But it is a huge place so it is a good idea to check their site and think a bit about what you want to do there. Here is a link: http://www.skansen.se/pages/?ID=221

I have to confess I have never visited the Nobel Museum so I can not say anything about it.

  19. My condolences for having to tender in Nynashamn.

Gamla Stan is walking distance from the Central Station. The commuter trains do not stop at Gamla Stan.

I will offer an alternative to getting off at the Central Station, which is quite busy and can be confusing due to the number of exits/entrances.

Coming from Nynashamn there are only two stops for those wanting to visit Stockholm, they are Stockholm Södra and Stockholm C. If you want to make things a bit simpler, I suggest getting off at Stockholm Södra.

When you get off the train at Södra look to the center of the platfrom and follow the sign to "Swedenborgsgatan". Take the escalator up and continue through the little mini-mall until you exit the station. Cross the street and to your left you will see a bus stop. You can take bus 55 or bus 43 right to the Djurgården ferry, the HOHO boats also stop there, as do the HOHO buses. You are also right across the street from the Old Town. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the bus stop in front of the ferry (perhaps North-Bound knows), but it is the stop right after Slussen.

Using this alternative, you not only beat the crowds and confusion of the central station but you get to see a tiny slice of Södermalm. It's the island that I live on and not on the usual tourist maps.

Good luck and have a great time in Stockholm.

    Al

Al, a very interesting idea about Södra Station, I never thought about that myself but it does make sense. So I have added both the Central Station and Södra Station on my cruise map. Here is a link:

    http://maps.google.se/maps/ms?hl=sv&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=100446628536787947860.000448dadb8bebb56f079&ll=59.34667,18.103495&spn=0.024549,0.057163&t=h&z=14

For anyone unfortunate to dock in Nynäshamn I recommend you skip the HOHO boat and go with the regular ferry insted. The ferry is included in the transport card you should buy in Nynäshamn. Your time in Stockholm will be very limited and the HOHO boat can take some time since you will have to wait for the next boat whenever you get off.

  20. Our ship is docking in Frihamnen from 7:30am to 4:30 pm on a Monday. We want to see the Vasa museun, Royal Palace and Armory, City Hall (maybe), and walk around Gamla Stan. Can we walk from ship to all of these sites and what order is recommended? Should we get the card?

Frihamnen is in an industrial and port area with little of interest nearby. So walking is not recommended. Instead there is a bus number 76 from Frihamnen that goes past the area where the Vasa museum is located and then continues to Gamla Stan where the Royal Palace is.

To take this bus you need a ticket, it is not possible to pay the driver. There was a little tourist shop and information on the quay where passengers got off the ship last summer, and they did sell bus tickets. I recommend a stop there before you start walking towards the bus stop.

Here is a link to a map which shows Frihamnen port and the route for bus 76 together with the main sights in Stockholm. The map may help you decide which order you would like visit the different places.

If you decide to go to the City Hall be aware that it is only possible to enter if you are on a guided tour. Here is a link to check times when tours in English are available:

    http://international.stockholm.se/Tourism-and-history/The-Famous-City-Hall/Guided-tours-of-the-City-Hall/

I don’t know if you ask about the Stockholm card that includes museums or the transport card. The card that includes museums costs SEK 395 and is only worth the money if you will visit several museums. The transport card costs SEK 100 and is valid for unlimited travel on public transport for 24 hours, and it does include the ferry between Gamla Stan and Djurgården.

  21. Thank you for your bus transport advice. One more question. Is the changing of the guard a must see? Can we walk along the waterfront from Vasa Museum to the Palace and how long would it take? A nice scenic walk? We will try to fit both in if it is worth it. Thanks.

It is possibel to walk from the Vasa Museum to the Palace and it is a nice walk. But it is also a long walk, may be an hour, depending on how fast you walk. I would not recommend to spend that much time just walking. A nice way to go from Djurgården, where the museum is, to Gamla Stan may be the ferry. Or just walk across Djurgården bridge and take bus 76 to the Palace (if it is not a Sunday).

  22. Thanks for your response. We already have the Stockholm Card and I realize (unfortunately ) that it doesn't include the Slussen Ferry. Will we need SEK to pay for the ferry or do they take credit cards? If SEK are needed for the ferry, do you know if there is an ATM at the Ferry Dock? I believe I read there is not one at Stadsgarden.

    Thanks,

When I have used the ferry (not this summer) they did take credit cards. so it seems very likely they still do.

As for ATM near Stadsgården I did check this last summer and there was one inside the Viking Terminal, very close to where the cruise ships dock, in the same port area. There is no ATM at the ferry dock, and I haven't looked for one around the Slussen area.

  23. Thanks for the response. Do you know what the bus route number(s) are? Also, where is the bus stop in relationship to where the Emerald docks (Stadsgarden Quay 167)?

The bus stop is on the main road just outside the port area where the ship will be docked. There are several buses that stop there and I believe they all go to Slussen. Just ask the driver to make sure.

Don’t forget that it is not possible to pay on the bus, you will need a ticket or a 24 Hour Transport Card or a Stockholm Card before you board. I recommend a stop at the information shop, where you get off the ship, to buy the 24 hour transport card. That card is valid for all public transport within Stockholm and it includes the ferry from Slussen.
