  1. ;)

Ok, I get it. I really do, but I don’t want to do a landing. A drive by of the scenery with visits to other non-Antarctica ports is fine for me. Part of the reason I’m doing the trip is because I saw pictures like the one below taken by the Hotel Director when Journey was there in 2012. Honestly, stop throwing a dampener on the subject.

lovely picture Phil. I have no doubt we’ll enjoy our ‘drive by’ :)
  2. Lots of line keep, and in some cases are increasing the number of, smaller ships (e.g. Azamara). It’s the the size of the ship, so much as the standard of rooms, balconies etc, that can be provided on the vessel.

As an aside, apparently, the huge ships are highly profitable. The more bodies on a ship, the higher the profit. Hence, I think why it’s always that bit more expensive to cruise on a smaller ship.

  3. Fred did go through a period of expansion several years back. They bought more old ships and lengthened existing ships. In more recent years they have upgraded the facilities on the sips too.

They are all getting very old and will have to be replaced. They could could buy old but newer ships. Perhaps from Saga, Azamara, Oceana or P and O. I don’t know how profitable the cruise business is for Fred Olsen. They could just call it a day. I would guess they struggle to be competitive out of Southampton. From the regional ports they have Cruise and Maritime Voyages expanding. Thomson are also getting newer ships and must compete on fly cruises and a few UK cruises.

I like the Fred Olsen cruise experience and hope I can continue to cruise with them for many years.

It would be a shame for them to fold. Surely they only struggle to be competitive against the other lines because of the out-of-date ships.
  4. Could someone tell me how far the ports are from the local towns. We have arranged several tours in other ports, plus we have ground time of 12 in rainforests and San Juan, so don’t feel we need to do any of the advertised tours in Golfito, Quepos or Puntarenas. We would just like to go into town for a mooch around and a spot of lunch.

  5. My husband and I are currently booked on the Celebrity Eclipse Antartica cruise in January 2019 and are thinking of switching to the Azamara Pursuit sailing.

Can anyone advise if a larger ship may be better in rough seas?

Neither of us are prone to sea sickness however, we've never experienced really rough seas.

I have some concern about the number of passengers disembarking from the Eclipse in the small ports and would definitely prefer the Pursuit there on that.

While we've enjoyed sailing Celebrity, we prefer Azamara.

Any input is appreciated, likewise, we are not considering a sailing with landings.

I think being in the centre of a larger ship is supposed to be somewhat better. I suffer from sea sickness on mildly rough seas. Nevertheless, we have booked the Azamara (I’ll just make a point of taking the medication 3 times a days in the relevant seas). I really like the Eclipse, but the price of this cruise is virtually the same on both when the number of nights is calculated and my research suggests the Pursuit will offer much more, including two expert lecturers on the ecology and wildlife 🙂
  6. I think several countries only deny entry to persons who have committed certain types of crimes (sex offenders, drug traffickers etc). As others have said, each country has it’s own position on entry requirements. The problem then is no necessarily being permitted onto the cruise, but if your partner could enter the countries visited.

  7. I'm totally with you. I booked this cruise a month or two back and it suits me just fine. I saw the crew posting the last time Journey was there and the obvious excitement. In general I like to take more of a "helicopter" view of things rather than detail. I am not really a detail person! This cruise really appeals and I'll hope that Drakes Passage is kind. If it isn't well I'll have some stories to tell!

    Phil

So have you booked the same one as us Phil, 6th January 2019? We are staying in the Costa Rican rainforests for 11 days before a cruise in January, so do like to immerse ourselves sometimes, but we are both happy to have the extra comfort etc of a drive by cruise in Antartica.

  8. We've stayed in all port N2 suites except 8070 and a few on the starboard side without issue.
Thank you Marinaro 🙂 Have you stayed in 8036?

Ellbon, thanks for the heads-up. I booked 8036 yesterday 😮 I guess on the flip side, it affords more privacy?

  9. Not an excuse. Take your meds and go on a cruise with landings. Hertigruten has new eco-friendly ships offering landings on Antarctica. Not to be missed. We did their smallest Antarctic ship, Fram, in February this year. My wife is 76 and I was three months after total knee replacement. The crews are great helping guests. Recall that we had one handicapped person who relied on crutches... As some have said, seeing Antartica from a ship only is like seeing and understanding New York from the Atlantic ocean. Doesn't count. Our Antarctic cruise took us south of the Antarctica Circle - its even a different world from that above the Circle.
No, it’s not an excuse. It’s a choice. A “drive by” is what some people want. We also have some concerns about the effects on the environment of the numbers of people landing. Each to their own and all that!
  10. There are so many hotels in London. Probably best you look at the broad spectrum of reviews on Tripadvisor and Booking.Com (reviews can only be placed on B.Com by people who have stayed having booked through them, so all are genuine). Covent Garden and theatre district is a good suggestion. All of the sights are easy to get too by the London tube (what they call the subway in NYC). It’s fast, clean and efficient, with excellent, clear subway maps available at every station. Stations are on every couple of blocks.

Hope you enjoy your visit to the UK.

  11. My first Azamara cruise was this past August which was booked two years prior. As much as I would love to book another, they haven't retained this new customer. They will continue to fill the ships since they don't have much availability with so few cabins compared to their competitors.

However I believe those new AZ cruisers coming from Celebrity and the other mass market lines will also cringe when they encounter the higher prices. Thus I believe if they chase off their current loyal passengers and rateblock their new passengers, it will be difficult to continually replace them eventually. That's when the pricing will adjust. It's all supply and demand. As long as they can get it, they'll ask it.

I'm helping reduce AZ pricing one cruise at a time... on another similar line where AZ's aft VX is classified as an aft Concierge with all the additional perks and air for less fare.

I was just looking into the 17 night Antarctica cruise in January ‘19. I was shocked by the price £9811 for a balcony cabin. My agent suggested looking at the Celebrity 14 night similar cruise. When we worked it out, pro rata on the number of nights, taking account of the gratuities, internet etc (Celebrity is including the classic drinks package, but the included drinks on Azamara are fine for us and equivalent anyway), Celebrity came to £9700! My agent said cruise prices have been rising across the industry. I forgot to ask why. Anyway, much as the cost of these cruises makes me cringe, We’re booking with Azamara.

  12. You will not find any information on CC cabins on Pursuit.

It is still sailing as Adonia and will not sail as Pursuit until August 2018

I do not believe that CC cabins will exist until after the major refit that starts in April.

    ,

Thank you Bloodaxe, that’s really helpful.

  13. Thank you Host Jazzbeau. I haven’t checked checked the cabins thread (sorry, I didn’t see it). I will check. I thought, having looked at the deck plans, that deck 8 had cabins above and below!

I have now checked the cabin thread and unfortunately, it does not have information on the Pursuit.

  14. I definitely understand the recommendations for a cruise with landings, but we both have a fair bit of arthritis. Consequently, we decided on the drive by. It will be enough for us.

I’m a bit alarmed by the idea of the ship not using stabilisers ECCruise  Why would that be?

  15. Hi experienced Azamara folk, I’m wondering if any of the Club Continent suites are better than others on the Pursuit. I need to be pretty much in the centre of the ship as I suffer sea sickness and it’s the 17 night Antarctica cruise. Are you crazy? I hear you cry! Yes, a bit! Based on looking at the deck plans (which make Azamara ships looking amazingly straight up and down), I’m thinking 8036, but I would appreciate any advice from more those more experienced with this line.

  16. Thank you for your replies. It sounds like FO ships are not for us then. Shame as we live in the North of England, but I’m used to Celebrity and will be on our first Azamara cruise in January. All of the other cruise lines have been buying and/or are planning new ships. I think it’s long over due that FO do the same.
