  1. No problemo! I just booked a month ago and have been obsessing on CC and TripAdvisor. We all have to spread the wealth of knowledge. Don't know if I would've ever gone on a Carnival cruise without reading all these threads. Glad I did!

  2. trixiegal, did you use them for post cruise transporation back to the airport?

No, because my flights are later in the day so I just book a car to drive around the area and drop-off at FLL. However, I would trust them to be just as efficient and reliable if I needed them post-cruise. Give them a call and you'll see what I mean.

  3. I didn't do balconies when my kids were really little because I was nervous. My DS was kind of a handful. Lol

Our first one on RCCL was when he was around 8 and we didn't really use it. Now we are going on the Carnival Breeze and getting a Lido balcony. We're very excited!

I guess it depends on whether you and your wife will make time to use it in the mornings for sunrise breakfast and after they are asleep. Sounds like a good plan!

  4. Yes, I'm leaning toward the Cityview Trolley now. I think I read somewhere we may be able to find coupons in the hotels when we get off the ship. So I'm not going to pre-book online.

  5. I love checking out the clearance racks its like a treasure hunt. :D

That's the best part of going into DSW! And they really have some unique finds in clearance.

I have to go there tomorrow to return two pairs I bought online. I'm taking DD with me so she can attempt to get me out of there if I start to pick out too many shoes. I live near a very busy DSW and sometimes the sizing and selections are limited. Usually keeps me from going too crazy.

  6. Or any "theme" really. Luau. Flamingos. Reggae. Under the sea. Gilligan's Island. Pirates and princesses could be fun!

You can really be as subtle or crazy as you want with any theme.

I would also suggest surprising them by decorating the door and/or cabin. I always bring fun glasses for towel animals too.

I can also see how something fun and crazy could be healing for them. Given that the OP knows the family and we don't, I'm deferring to their judgment and assuming that the idea has already been cleared.

I think it's a fantastic idea from someone who went through a similar situation with my kids when they were 8 & 12. I didn't have a good friend like you who suggested a cruise but I did spend a lot of time planning day trips and doing zany activities just to keep us from drowning in despair. Another poster is right, it takes a LONG time to recover from a major death in the family. You know your friends, and if the kids are excited, go for it!

On a side note, tell your friend to Google "Comfort Zone". It's an awesome free weekend camp for kids who have lost a parent or closed loved one. My kids really enjoyed going and even wanted to go back the next year. We live on the East Coast but I think they also have them in California.

  7. Thanks for posting these pics! I'm so excited to see DS' reaction at his birthday decorations.

So, I'm not clear whether they put them up before embarkation or on his actual birthday? I thought I indicated a date when I bought the package, but I did buy the package with a birthday cake included.

  8. I only fake bake in the summer right before a vacation and I do what they call a cocktail- tanning bed to build up the base and then a spray tan. I like the results because the spray tan has a more natural tanned look as opposed to that gross orangey glow. And it doesn't fade for a long time.

Totally agree that you must let the spray tan set and it's not the best odor. I usually shower after 4-6 hours before bed. I also over moisturize because the spray tan can actually dry out your skin. I use a combo of almond oil and lightly scented ultra tan-extending lotion or some for of Jergen's. I do have the self-tanning lotions and do use those once or twice a week as needed in between visits to the tanning salon.

Honestly, it really depends on skin coloring on what will work best for each person. Some people are way too fair to do a spray tan. Yellow, red and olive tones tan the best. I'm very yellow and can get a deep golden but I can burn if not careful so I slather on the lotion. It can never hurt to put on a lot of lotion.

  9. We have sailed various lines.

The food on our last Disney Cruise was by far the worst we've ever experienced.

Cold & Under Cooked or Way Over cooked and dried out every night in the dining room!

BUT...the Breakfast Buffet in Cabana's was the best we've experienced at sea to date!

I always complain about that being the main reason I just can't spend so much $$$ on Disney cruises. Granted, the ship's decor is fantastic and luxurious (that bedding!) and the service is like that of a Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton. But I can't get past the bad food. I mean they even messed up the Krispy Kreme donuts because they tasted freezer burned and soggy. How does that happen?!

My first Carnival Dream cruise last year was awesome and I enjoyed the food. It wasn't the best I've ever had but I'm into fine dining. So many choices and great service. The Taste Bar was also a very innovative concept at sea.

Go with the attitude that you will enjoy the amenities and service and you may be pleasantly surprised at the food. But I was disappointed in what I had on my Disney cruises, except of course with Palo.

  10. I'm a Princess newbie so I'm thinking I will be pleasantly surprised on my 40th bday cruise in September on CB. The reviews have been kind of dismal but I don't care because most of the time they are from apparently entitled people who are hard to please and love to nitpick.

I also know everyone has a different perspective because I refuse to give Disney anything over 3 stars (mostly based on decor and service) and most people are over-the-moon impressed with their cruises. I just don't like their food and really think they're catered to families with small children. My kids are teens now so won't waste the money on those ships anymore until they have kids. lol :p

Glad to know the reasoning behind all those short CBs but it helped me get an AMAZING deal on a corner aft mini suite. No complaints from me. I'm feeling so blessed that I get to spend another milestone birthday on a cruise. Spent my 30th on the Wonder and got an extra day at sea due to Hurricane Charlie in '04.

Any recommendations on where to book the bday dinner?

  11. I called in yesterday and the guy I spoke with was so friendly and animated that I asked if he was an actor! My daughter is an actress and I've been around a lot of drama-focused people for years so I was convinced he was only moonlighting as a RCI Vacation Planner lol. He was so engaging yet professional, I almost felt bad not booking a cruise with him. I'm in a service-oriented field and this guy impressed me so much. They must really be revamping after so many complaints because I got transferred to a few people due to my issue/questions and they were all helpful and pleasant.

Sidenote- what is a NCC? I had a serious issue on a ship years ago but I was told that my credit expired after a year. Does that not expire?
