"Destruction of keyboards by uncontrolled laughter while consuming liquids" is one of my goals... so happy to hear I succeeded :p:D
Maybe it should be your next disclaimer: Not responsible for inadvertent spillage.

Wow, that's kind of like asking what camera to bring.
There are all types, quality, power and with prices to match! I have several pair and usually bring my Nikon 10x50 60 degree. They are a bit on the heavy side but I like the power and clarity they provide.
For cruising, weight will be something to remember. Lugging around heavy binocs with all your other stuff can be a pain. There are some nice smaller alternatives of good quality. Go out to Amazon and take a look.
Have fun!

I have found that a great option for me on cruises (yes, I'm a guy) are top siders. They're comfortable, I can wear them anywhere from around the pool to yes - even the MDR!!

All of the above...but personally I like identifying Navy ships. With a good pair of binocs (I use a nice pair of Nikon 10x50's) you can spot the type and number from the ship to identify them. Certainly the wildlife as described and any other such stuff that "a closer look" will satisfy your curiosity.
Enjoy!!

To the hosts (and others,)
Can we now PLEASE end these tiresome, useless smoker vs non-smoker threads?
Please?
Thanks.

Hmmmmm,
My guess would have been to keep birds off. I don't think there's enough weight to keep the shingles in place. What we need here is a local.

As a true FIRST THING coffee lover myself, here's what I do...
We bring along with us two car coffee mugs - the kind with lids. Since I am the first one up, I take the mugs to any of several locations where coffee is available and fill 'em up! Then I go to an open deck and spend a few minutes with fresh coffee and enjoy the moment. Afterwards I then head back to the cabin and present my DH with her first cuppa in bed.
Just one of those neat enjoyable things we do on our cruises.

A confession...I have been following this review and without subscribing I find myself hooked! Melissa, your writing style is infectous (I think that's a word!) You're funny, informative and have a way of developing your characters (that happen to be real people!) that seasoned novelists would envy.
I honestly think you could develop your talent into a new career. In the meantime, I look foward to your chapters to come!
Thanks for the ride! -
And you can get soda with dinner in the MDR. A tip of 15% on $6.50 is 98 cents for the entire DAY.
Come on folks, where's your sense of humor??:p
FYI, I've already purchased my Refreshment package for my 9/14 departure.

I wonder why you have to tip a machine?????

Great!
Now they can have these stupid smoker vs. non-smoker wars on the Carnival forum!

My wife cannot walk and is in a WC. We have been cruising since the 80s and have seen great progress made in cruise lines accomodating disabled passengers. With such a great demand for these facilities, we have to book well over a year in advance. We don't have the luxury of waiting for the 'great deals' that are available as you get closer the cruise date.
What we would like to see is a HC stand by list for disabled passengers. Make it available to CA members or just past disabled cruisers who can go on short notice. If any HC rooms are available 30 days prior, RCI could start calling or email to see if any of them would like a cheap cruise on short notice. If no one takes it , fine. Then offer it out as an upgrade. But It would be a neat way to offer disabled passengers a 'great deal' that they wouldn't ordinarily be able to get.

Wow! Getting a little emotional here. My dad passed away back in February. (my mom passed away a few years ago.) I just received the remainder of my dad's things from his house in Florida, and among them was a box labeled photos and videos. It's full of pictures and videos from their cruises from the 70's into the 90's. I know their two favorite ships were Song of Norway and Song of America. They made photo albums with everything from their cruises. There's a passenger list book, luggage tags, landing card (sea pass). They saved everything...I had no idea! What a great box of memories I have here. All of their formal night pictures, too. It looks like they went primarily on RC; Song of America, Song of Norway and Nordic Empress, with some Holland America and a few on Princess as well.
You wouldn't believe the picture of their first staterooms. They appear to be ocean view, but so small! As the years go on, they moved up into nicer rooms.
Sorry for the random post. All these years I had no idea they had made photo albums of their cruises. And sort of touched that my dad saved everything after my mom passed away. I thought he'd gotten rid of a lot of stuff because he had such a hard time, but apparently he didn't.
Just noticed we'll be with you on FOS in Sept! Looking forward to meeting you.

Oh my goodness...my folks got me excited about cruising too. We were lucky enough to cruise with them several times and our first was on Song of America. I had a post a while ago (http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1947077) about her. We actually were on her twice but the cruise with my folks was awesome. My Dad being a Navy officer in WWII shared so much insightfull info.
My heart was in my stomach when I read your post remembering cruising with them and how they planted the seed.
Thanks!!!

Dittos on the dial7 car service. I've used them several times. We even had a cruise out of Cape Liberty - the first after Hurricane Sandy and they met us at the nearly deserted Newark airport and brought us right to the cruise terminal ON TIME!

sorry about your cruise!!!! Make that 3 from Ellijay...
Sorry I got off topic a bit but you all have no idea how small and remote Ellijay, GA is!
-
We were on the same cruise & agree with all your observations. It was our first time on Royal Caribbean and disappointed we could not make Cozumel either was was traveling with our family. I never thought about a ship not having enough propulsion to be able to pull along dockside, so learned something new.
While I will say the food was good in all the places we dined, along with Giovanni's dinner we had was excellent, some of the times they pick to close places like Windjammers was unusual.
We are not sure what we will try next time.
Imagine that - another CCr from little ol' Ellijay!!
Sorry your cruise didn't meet expectations. We've been on that ship twice with no issues but that was years ago... Maybe we'll meet up sometime. Its a small world!

Thank you all!!! (Especially Calgon for the wonderful history and pics!)
Little did I know that a simple memory would spark such a neat thread.
Thank you all for sharing!:D

I LOVE your hammock idea and, yes it might not fit. BUT if the type of hammock is one of those net type that we used to take camping - the nylon kind that rolls up into a small ball?
It might just fit kitty corner. You could attach one end to the balcony rail and for the other, get a small c-clamp to attach to the girder. You could even find a heavy duty plastic one at Home Depot.
May not work, a lot of variables involved. But it would be REALLY COOL if it did and the pictures would go down in CC history!!!!!
Good luck!

Hi!
We'll be taking an RCI Southern Caribbean cruise next year (Barbados, ST. Lucia, Antigua, Bonaire, Aruba, Grenada) and we're looking for any tour operators with WC Vans. DW cannot walk (MS) and needs a van for her WC. I know options are usually limited - we did find a good one in Bermuda last year so we were hoping we might have similar luck down south.
I've started hitting the various island tourism sites but you can't beat CC'rs with experience!!
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Time to research, plan and pack = $500
Cost of cruise and travel = $4000
A GREAT Mom who loves the family = Priceless!!

Non-smokers BE HONEST now.
You don't want smokers on the same ship as you, right?
Booking a disabled cabin?

Go ahead, take the cabin. Then while you're there think about WHY there is more room, WHY there is a roll in shower and WHY there is ramp out to the balcony. Think about the folks who have been there before you and who will be there after you.
Enjoy.
