  1. Hello! I received an ipad for Christmas and will be bringing it on my Silhouette cruise next month. How do I set it up so I can access the ship's wifi in my cabin or anywhere else on the ship? Also, is there something I can do in "Settings" on the ipad so I don't continuously access the wifi for email updates, etc.? I will have 90 minutes free internet thanks to elite status. I'm guessing with the wifi speed, that won't last very long. Do I need to go to the ilounge to set it up?

There will be instructions on how to set up your account and the costs.

Be sure to set up the iPad's Mail app before you leave home. That way you can log on to the WiFi, download email, then log off. Take your time reading and composing replies. Then log on, send replies, then log off. This way you'll greatly minimize your WiFi cost.

And this is VERY easy to practice before you leave home.

  2. We are leaving Sunday on the Jewel. I've packed an extremely large suitcase, and sent it with my parents who are driving there now. I am flying to NO tomorrow. Just read the fine print about the luggage weight limit of 50 pounds, and am sure that mine is heavier than that. How strict are they at the pier, is this going to be a problem? I am checking this bag. Also, I am bringing water and pop. Do I have to just carry it on?

The airline will weigh your suitcase, the ship will not. No worries at the ship.

  3. One thing we didn't do, and wish we would have (we just did recently on a land based vaca so we know what we missed) was drive the road to Hana. Hands down, that was the absolute most beautiful drive I have ever been on in my life. I personally did not think that road was very scary like people seem to say. Do yourself a favor, rent a car, and drive to Hana! You will not regret it! (Of course, do it the first day in Maui).

We'll be in Maui for the first time in January. I found an iOS and Android app that gives one a guided tour using the smart phones GPS. They have three for Maui: Road to Hana, Haleakala and Full Tour. Full tour costs $10 and covers the entire island -- over 400 points of interest. The Hana and Haleakala are less than $5. Can't wait to try this out.

  4. We are leaving on Jan 31 on Explorer. Does the ship get the feed of the game live?

They'll have a Super Bowl party in one of the larger lounges. Lots of fun and good food. Get there early if you're picky about where you want to sit.

One year the feed had no commercials. We'd see what the broadcast crew was doing during the commercials. Frequently they were rewinding/fast forwarding through big plays or an injury so they could talk about it after the commercial.

Another year the feed had commercials in a foreign language (spanish, if I remember correctly) but the broadcast play-by-play was in English.

  5. The bikes that are rented out in Bermuda aren't enough CCs for two adults to ride on them, are they?

Tourists can only rent scooters with the smallest engines. They do rent scooters for two. And while they'll do the speed limit, they won't do much more. On hills you'll be at maximum throttle if you're riding two-up.

  6. As far as I can tell the ships docking at Royal Naval Dockyard are following the same route they always have...I don't think there's much choice in the matter because there's only one channel that can accommodate ships of that size.

Maybe it's the size? I just checked our records, and our first cruise was on the Celebrity Zenith to Hamilton. The other two cruises, Norwegian Crown and Norwegian Majesty docked at St. George.

It must have been the Zenith that sailed right at St. George and turned right following along the coast and finally turning left and making the approach to Hamilton. Yeah...that must be the difference. The big ships sailing today, to the Dockyard, use the route straight out from the Dockyard.

  7. This bit of information was shared on the FB page of this webcam by the dockmaster.

Many years ago during WW11 there were 2 main channels developed in Bermuda. The South channel & the North channel. Both of these are considered to be on the North side of the island or North shore. NOB which is, Naval Operating Base was built for fueling and stores of these war ships in WW11, which is in the Great Sound and can be seen on Google Earth. It is a large peninsula of 2 islands that were joined together. They had seaplane ramps, fueling docks, outdoor movie theater, stores etc etc, a complete city. So...there were 2 channels developed for this purpose. The South channel would take most ships of that era and the North channel was primarily for Submarines which had a deeper draft. The North channel is the preferred channel for the larger ships of today, and they more than likely cannot even transit the South channel.

Interesting! I found this on Wikipedia:

Two islands at the western side of the Great Sound, Tucker's and Morgan's, were levelled, adding 36 acres (150,000*m2) to Bermuda's landmass, and creating a peninsula extending from the Main Island. The entire base measured 260 acres (1.1*km2). It was not long enough to allow a useful runway, but did have extensive tarmac and hangar areas. Large Martin flying boats could be pulled ashore for hangarage, and servicing. When the area was first occupied by the US Navy, it was titled the Naval Operating Base. Once the Naval Air Station was completed, the US Navy relocated its air operations to it from Darrell's Island. The base continued to be used for this purpose until 1965, when the last flying boats were withdrawn from service. US Navy P-2 Neptune landplanes, based at the USAF's Kindley Air Force Base, then took over the maritime patrol role. The US Navy took over Kindley AFB, entirely, in 1970, and it renamed it NAS Bermuda. The former Naval Air Station was redubbed the NAS Annex. It served primarily as a dock area for US Naval shipping, until the closure of all of the US bases at the end of the Cold War, in 1995.

And here's a picture that I believe shows the location of the old Naval Observation Base (NOB) -- see the green arrow. Notice what looks like a man-made channel through the Great Sound to take one right to the NOB:

  8. Good Morning ~ I have watched the Summit and Breakaway and other ships sail away numerous times and they have always followed this route.

I like both of you iheartbda and Paul from Maryland do not know why. Maybe I can find out from one of the locals. :)

We haven't sailed to Bermuda since 2008, but I remember the ship sailing right at St. George's then following the coast to the Dockyard. And leaving the same way.

The "cut" they sail through now seems like it might be man-made. I would love to hear any info you can find about this.

  9. Celebrity Summit is about to sail away in about 15 minutes followed by

    Norwegian Breakaway...great views :)

    http://www.portbermudawebcam.com

It was interesting to see the route the Summit took. I thought the ships turned right leaving the Dockyard and sailed along the Bermuda coast -- then turned left when they got to St. George. But the Summit went straight out of the Dockyard. Then seemed to go through a narrow cut -- then turned right. Anyone know about this?

  10. I am planning to rent a motor scooter in Bermuda with my husband. I can't find any threads about this and am looking to hear from folks who have done it. Thanks!

We spent a week in Bermuda at a rental condo and had a scooter. It was great being able to go where ever we wanted, when we wanted.

However, I would only recommend one rent a scooter if they have extensive motorcycle experience. Even then, it can be dangerous -- you drive on the left and the roads are twisty and narrow. And Bermudians drive like it's the opening lap of the Indy 500! Also -- tourists can only rent scooters with the smallest engines -- two-up you'll be lucky to reach 30 MPH flat out.

If you've ever taken a cruise to Bermuda you know the staff strongly recommends against renting a scooter -- they have passengers injured in scooter accidents each time they dock.

So...if you have motorcycle experience, if you think you can safely drive on the left -- maybe. It can be dangerous.

  11. I have not used my iPad to manage my pictures that I have taken with my camera. I would like to off load my pics from my camera to my iPad but not sure how to do this. Any help?

You need the iPad Camera Connection Kit to transfer the pictures from your camera card to the iPad. On the iPad the pictures will be in the Camera Roll (inside Photos).

When home you'll sync the iPad to your computer and transfer the pictures to the computer. On a Mac the photos would be imported in to iPhoto. And hopefully you're backing up the Mac so your data is safe from a hard drive failure.

  12. I'm sorta new to this site .. but is there a way I can just view RADIO's postings?

I'd love to not have to sift through all the groupie fan postings saying over and over again "thank you so very very very very very much for this ....and you made my dayyyyy ... and I can't wait for morrrrre .. blah blah" (no offense ...)

I find it easy enough to scroll fast just looking for Radio's name, but it's pretty painful when folks quote his postings that contain pictures -- all the pictures get posted again! It's really not that hard to delete the pictures and just quote the part of the message you're replying to.

  13. Can anyone give a little more info on these? During a 3-4 hour period what would a tour consist of? Is there specific sites that most of the guides take you to? Do you exit the taxi and get to wander around the site or do you remain in the taxi for the better part of the tour?

How many people can go in one vehicle? I understand there are cars and there are vans!

From what I've read (not personal experience) it works like this:

    1) taxis with blue flags are for "tours"

    2) price is regulated at $40 per hour

    3) some are mini-vans, probably seating up to six

    4) driver will go/do whatever/where ever you ask

  14. It is simple to me. An event that happens during a cruise is a happenstance of fate or just plain bad luck. A defect in the propulsion system that is known, but not disclosed in the ordinary course of business, is just plain deception. The former is fate, the latter is deliberate.

Celebrity monitors the oil in the propulsion system, checking for metal shavings. They can usually predict a pod failure and take preemptive action. The key word being "usually." They're not hiding anything about pod failures -- just trying to deal with a problem that can't really be permanently solved.

  15. There is a place on the Princess website that ask if you are celebrating an anniversary or anything. What do they do if you are and I assume there is a charge? We are scheduled for 9/9, when will we get our package with the paperwork? We are using a TA, will they send it to her? We have filled out the personalizer. Can't believe how many cruises people take, (2 a year?) Do they offer you a good deal while on the ship to sail again? Is that the time to book? If you get a soda card, does that apply to coffee, latte, every drink but acohol? If so, how much are they? I have always heard about the chocolate bar, but don't see anything on the princess website for it. Do they not have it on the Dawn? I understand they don't have the midnight buffet (which is fine with us). Thanks for your help!!!:)

If you fill out the anniversary or birthday thing they'll put balloons around your door. No charge. Maybe a cake at dinner, not sure about that.

Documents will be mailed to your TA 4 to 6 weeks before the cruise.

If you book another cruise while onboard you pay a reduced deposit and get a shipboard credit (amount depends on the length of the cruise you book). You don't have to select a specific cruise, you book on board and have four years to actually select a cruise.

The soda card only applies to drinks from the "gun" (coke, sprite, etc).
