  1. Glad you enjoyed my review. Thanks for reading!

Trident: Have no fears about the Veendam. She is such a lovely ship. Enjoy her and Bermuda!

We will be spending 14 glorious days on her going to New England/Canada, leaving from your great city and returning to.

The first island we went to was Bermuda (1 week at Elbow Beach Hotel) and have yet to find an island including the Hawaiian islands that can hold a candle to her. Bermuda is just magical IMHO.

So very glad you enjoyed your cruise and our favorite island.

  2. Hi Peg, the overhang is almost all the way out, but allows some sun. We docked with the port side facing the harbor and got sun all afternoon. Starboard should have shade. There are two arm chairs (look for cushions tucked behind the curtains) a small table plus a lounger. That leaves plenty of additional room to walk around, it's quite large. No spot, but windy while under way. The sunset coming out of Boston comes right from behind the wake, beautiful. Have a great cruise.

    Hello Cayman 09,

So glad you told me where to look for the seat cushions.

Good to know we will have quite a bit of shade. We definitely would have preferred port side but, there are only two corner cabins to a deck, so starboard it is.

Did not know steward would move inside table to balcony for a meal. We always eat breakfast in our cabin. We would never have him do that for fourteen days. We will juggle our coffee pot and cups out the door to the small table. If the weather and wind cooperate maybe dinner on the balcony while docked in Quebec or cruising down the St. Lawrence.

We are so looking forward to sunsets, moon rising and who knows maybe even a sunrise over the wake on our aft soot free balcony. As you can see we really do enjoy our balcony whenever we are not on a shore excursion.

Thank you so much, you have been a great help.

    Peg

  3. Cayman 09,

Glad to hear you loved your cabin. We have 095 starboard corner. We will use the steps to go down, but have to use the elevator for going up.

Hope you can answer a few questions for me.

Does the Lido deck overhang enough to provide shade on the balcony? How many chairs are on the balcony and I assume the small table will not hold a room service tray?

Was it windy or calm and did you have a soot problem? We so love our balcony and this looked to be larger then most of the Vista balconies.

I know we will be happy with the size of the ship as she is a sister to the Ryndam and that is our favorite ship of all the ships we have sailed, so sorry she is leaving the fleet and we will not get to sail her again.

    Peg

  4. Did you arrive at Black Falcon early? In your opinion would a later arrival be better.

My DH's back and my knees do not take to standing in line for an extended period of time.

Are there any benches to sit on?

I had been thinking of requesting wheelchair assistance for my husband, but it sounds like it did not really work for you.

It has been awhile since we cruised, we must have been quite lucky as I do not remember having to stand in any long lines or any long waits to be processed at our embarkation port.

Glad you had a good cruise all in all, Bermuda is such a beautiful island.

  5. Lorie & Ann,

Glad to hear you both had great cruises and that the Veendam is in good shape.

We board her on the 11th of July for the 14 day New England/Canada cruise.

Due to some postings, we booked her with great trepidation. We do have one of those infamous aft added on cabins. She is the size ship we love, with a very good itinerary(how often do you get to visit the same port twice) at the right time of the year for us.

    Peg

  6. You will be fine in Fairbanks and Anchorage. We were in Denali in 2002 and coverage was almost non-existent, but that may have improved by now.

Had no problem in Juneau and Ketchikan. Sitka was a different story, coverage was fine but was billed roaming charges. Verizon did refund the roaming charges and taxes after inquired about said charges , but also had to give a geography lesson for this to happen.

I told billing I was sitting in front of a Verizon truck when I made the call, so was quite sure it was in the coverage area.

Check your plan coverage and enjoy your cruise.

    Alaska is a glorious place.

  7. We are booked into a fully obstructed ocean "No view" cabin on the Ms. Nieuw Amsterdam, cabin #4080.Has anyone ever been in this cabin before, or has been one one of these totally obstructed no view cabin and has taken a picture? We are prepared to have a huge lifeboat in front of the window and unable to see anything else, except just to get a bit of sunlight. Just wondering if we should spend some extra money to upgrade it to a "partially obstructed" ocean view so we can at least has a glimpse of the ocean.

Any pictures of any of these type of cabin would help.

    Thank you in advance.

There is a site we can no longer mention---facts.com that would be of help to you. If you know the nickname of the line you are sailing on I think you will be able to figure out the address. It is quite possible you will have a decent view, definitely not great, but might be enough if all you want is light.

This site has been my go to in picking out cabins on Hal ships.

Good luck and enjoy your cruise.

  8. Hertz is at the Marriott Hotel. You can walk there from where your ship is docked. Look for an outdoor parking lot behind the hotel and you should see a back entrance there.

I have seen no mention of Hertz but many have rented from other dealers in this location with no problem. You are very lucky if you are the only ship in port.

Our roads are not conducive to speeding except perhaps on the 100 series highways. The police are fairly strict.

I would suggest taking the coastal roads down to Lunenburg and the main highway back if you are short of time. You could include Peggy's Cove easily on this day if you wish.

Thank you for your reply Maryann,

On my AAA site there is a Hertz location right at the pier, looks like it might be attached to building #10 Immigration Annex, at least it is listed on the port site map. Of course, I have no idea how current that is. Will be calling them soon when I am sure we will be going the rental car route.

Unless I read the port schedule wrong we should be the only ship (Veendam) in port on the 13th & 23rd of July 2015.

Do you think 5 hours is a realistic roundtrip time frame. If ship docks on time and we can be at Hertz and on our way by 10am we really have a 7 hour window to play with before returning to ship. Because we will be in Halifax two different days I could split the trips up.

Also interested in the cemetery with the Titanic graves, Citadel and the anchor monument from the explosion

  9. Has anyone rented from Hertz at 1099 Marginal Road in Halifax, NS?

Looks like it is very close to pier 21 at the port.

If you rented from them, how easy was it to get to from the pier and how quickly did you receive your paperwork and car?

Will be there 7/13/15 and 7/23/15 and it looks like the Veendam will be only cruise ship in port on those days.

How strict are they on speed limit enforcement outside the city?

Thinking of driving out to Lunenburg and Mahone Bay one day and touring city and Peggy's Cove on the other day in port.

  10. Yes, there were escargot as a starter on the farewell dinner menu (from post #191):

    "Starters * Soups * Salads

    - Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail – American cocktail sauce

    - Duck Pate, Caviar and Smoked Salmon – celery apple salad, classic condiments

    - Escargot Bourguignon – herb garlic butter, Burgundy wine, French bread

    ..."

I remember being on a cruise once with a tablemate who ordered seconds ... and thirds ... of the escargot. He obviously had a thing about them, and we waited (mostly) patiently while he had them. So, if you really like them, you can, like with other dishes on HAL such as the lobster tails, order more than one serving.

    Dave

Sorry Dave, somehow I missed them in your 191 post. As I always say, " just because I wear glasses, doesn't mean I can see."

I would never make tablemates wait while I ordered seconds on an individual basis, how rude. I do a double order of escargot and a salad and inform the waiter that will be my entire meal for the evening.

I really do enjoy escargot and they are rarely on a restaurant menu in my area. Hopefully, because this is a two week cruise for us but, also being sold as

individual one week sailings, there will be two farewell dinners with them on the menu.

  11. Thanks again jti513 and Linda. Mom does well for 84 but her back does hurt her on long flights so I think it would be the same on a bus. After doing the river cruise and gold mine the day before she may be pretty bagged. A down day may be just the thing she would need on the day of the Tundra Tour. I'll probably go by my self.

One more question. If Mom wanted to skip the gold mine tour (she did it with my niece several years ago) is it possible to go back to the hotel after the river boat tour?

If you are doing the Chenya River cruise from Fairbanks and if the paddlewheel leaves from the same place (very nice facility/gift shop ) it did in 2002, yes you can leave the tour. We did, actually I think someone in the gift shop called a cab or gave me the cab phone number to call. We went to the University of Alaska museum instead of to the gold dredge. Just be sure to tell your bus driver and tour guide that you will not be continuing the tour, so they do not run around looking for you when the head count is off. I don't recall exactly how much the cab fare was from river to the museum and then the fare from museum back to hotel. I would say the total was no more then $25.00 for both cab rides. In fact, I would discuss this option of your mom returning to the hotel when the tour bus picks you up at your hotel. I am sure your hotel could give you cab co. phone numbers that you could call the day before to see if this is a viable option.

The Tundra Tour was definitely your run of the mill yellow school bus.

  12. Hi Mickie, thanks for your report on Best Western Adams Quincy. It's good to know you had a positive experience there as well as others cruising with you. Lots of people post looking for shuttle service to ship and free parking so it is helpful to hear your review. Unless people are planning to spend extra days sightseeing in Boston it is certainly a good option for those just looking for a pre or post cruise hotel.

Thank you all. No longer need stay and park hotel. There was a fantastic price drop on airfares for us , so we are flying in. 1 hour flight sure beats 6+ hours in the car.

  13. We are sailing on 7/11/15 to 7/25/15 Saturday to Saturday. Looking at the port schedule, think the Veendam is only ship in port on those dates.

If we were to park in the garage, realistically how far from garage to cruise terminal and how long would it take to walk for slow but not snail pace 70 year old. Have been told it is a 5 minute walk! I know parking is now $20.00

    a day.

I have googled the area and tried to do a virtual drive via satellite mode of it, but something is missing in the driving instructions I think. Looks like you enter garage on Drydock Street. Do you exit on Drydock, cross over drydock walk by what looks like a parking lot to me and make a left on Black Falcon Ave. (looks like large alleyway to me) and walk down to between what I think it says between section C and section D of overhead walkways from design center into I guess upper floor of terminal floor. Cruise terminal entrance looks like it is halfway between these overheads at street level. Wish there was a walking map on port website. To bad they couldn't have built garage connected to terminal building. Would walking route be same on debarkation

    day.

BW Quincy Adams is starting to look better & better in away.

  14. My best guess would be that the hotel is the Hyatt Place in Medford. I'm not familiar with the hotel, but from their web site it looks like they do not offer any shuttle services. According to the MBTA trip planner, you would walk two minutes to the bus stop, take the 101 bus to Malden Center and the Orange line to downtown Boston. This would take 35-45 minutes.

What is your hotel budget? If you're on a tight budget, I'd look at the best Western Adams in Quincy or the Holiday Inn Express in Dorchester because of their airport and Cruiseport shuttles.

Could this possibly be a Holiday Inn? I may have an area of Boston mixed up.

Is there a Summerville or is Somerville what I am thinking about. We stayed in a Holiday Inn there in 1974 or 1975 I think. Would not stay there again.
