  1. Egad! Is this "bus ticket for the day" the same as the 1-day transport pass @ 100 Swedish kroner? We plan to use the ferry three times and assumed from what we have read on this board that the ferry WAS INCLUDED.

    Corroboration please.

    Paula

Seems to be some confusion again about this. There is a 24 hour card for 100 crowns that is good for the ferry from Vasa to Slussen, as well as all other SL Public transportation. This card is good for one person only and can't be shared.

The other option are the "cash coupons", a strip costs 180 crowns and can be used by more than one person. These cannot be used on the ferry.

    Have fun,

  2. Hello,

I am docking on a SUNDAY at Frihamnen. Is the info booth at the pier open on Sundays to buy the 24 hour travelcard?

I have been studying the Biljettautomat (ticket machines) and I am wondering if I can simply purchase a Period Biljetter (1dygn) from the machine. or do I have to purchase all seperate Zonbiljetter only?

I know to Press Zone A only, Vuxen, Helt Pris

    (we are all adults)

My last question is, if I am forced to only purchase seperate Zonbiljetter, can I choose 5 during the same transaction, or do I have perform 5 seperate credit card transactions for 5 tickets?

    Thanks for your help

If a ship is in port at Frihamnen I am pretty sure the counter where they sell the tickets will be open. However, bus 76 does not run on Sunday.

  3. For those of you that are docking in Stadsgarden that happen to check this board today, if you click on the link below for the Star Princess livecam, you get an excellent pic of where they dock in Stockholm. They must have re-oriented the camera, because this is the most I've seen of the city, and I've been checking it for about a month now (you can tell I'm getting excited).

    http://www.princess.com/bridgecams/tp/star_bridgecam.html

The camera shoes the Viking Line terminal and one of their red and white boats. Just keep walking that way and 15-20 minutes later you will be at Slussen and the Old Town.

  4. Hi, first of all thanks for all the amazing advice.

Now a question, everyone keeps mentioning going to Vasa first to beat the crowds, the only problem is that I want to see the Changing of the Guards at 12.

Is it possible to go to Djegarden(sp) see Vasa, possibly Skansen, and enjoy the island while still getting back to Gamla Stan for the Changing of the Guards?

so what do u suggest, beat the crowds or catch the changing of the guards???

Im on Jewel of the Seas and Ill be docking in Frihamen which means I have to take the 76 bus, how long does that take??

Bus 76 to Djurgårdsbron (the stop for the Vasa, Skansen etc) takes about 10 minutes or less.

As far as seeing Vasa and Skansen and then getting back to the palace for the COG, well, I don't really think so. Skansen is a big place and involves a lot of walking, and frankly, Skansen deserves better than a brief walk-through, in my opinion.

I would take my time and enjoy the Vasa at a leisurely pace and then get the Ferry or back to Bus 76 to the Old Town.

I do realize that some people like to cram as much as possible in on a cruise, but I hate to rush.

    Have a great time,

    Al

  5. Ultima Thule, North-bound, Al Frescoe (LOVE that name!), I am among your many fans on this board. What can you tell me about the Katarinahissen lift? Is it off the beaten path? Is there a charge for going up---or can you just ride up, snap some photos and head down? Any info you can give me will be appreciated.

If you are anywhere near Slussen Katarina Hissen is hard to miss here is a small pic.

As North-Bound said, there are some interesting areas behind the elevator and it's an easy walk back down to Slussen. The Södra Teatern and Mosebäcke is up there and a nice little square with a coffee cart. You can then either take the stairs or one of the side streets back down to Götgatan (one of the main shopping entertainment streets on Södermalm).

    Have fun,

  6. We will be vacationing in Stockholm at the same time as our friends are arriving on a cruise ship for the day. We would like to pick them up from the ship dock (Stadesgarden 167) in our rental car. Does anyone know if we can drive up to the passenger area to pick them up or do we have to park somewhere and walk up to greet them?

Any suggestions on how to do this and where to meet would be much appreciated!

PS: This thread is wonderful! Thanks for all the great advice on places to see and things to do while we are there!

Yes you can drive up to near the gate to the secure area where the cruise ships dock. Look for the Viking Line terminal, that will be the parking area, you will be able to see the ship at Stadsgården 167 from there. I would not really try to park and leave the car if I were you since you just want to pick them up. Just pull up as close as you can and kind of stay with the vehicle, someone may ask you to move it. this is also where taxis hang out (mostly disreputable "black Taxi's"), but if you stay with the car and are ready to move if asked you should have no problem.

    Enjoy,

    Al

  7. I haven't read all 29 pages, so I apologize if this has already been answered. We are on NCL Sun-in Stockholm on August 24 (our anniversary). What other ships are in? Where can we find out where we dock? Can we get the HOHO bus from there? Can we get to the Ice Bar from there. Would like to book the ice bar in advance if it is sure that we can get there. Thanks.

Sorry to tell you but NCL docks at Nynäshamn and calls it Stockholm. You will have to tender in to the dock and then you are still an hour away from downtown by train/bus.

You can't get HOHO from Nynäshamn. I suggest doing a search of this forum on "Nynäshamn", you will find reams of info.

    Enjoy,

  8. We were in S'holm a few days ago on Eclipse at S167. You can buy HOHO boat and bus tickets in the shop by the dock (you have to go out by it). You can buy a combined HOHO ticket and Vasa ticket for 180SEK... this saves queuing at the HOHO boat booth in 5 mins time. Walk out across the zebra crossing and turn left...just follow the signs to the boats. They start at 8.30. Walk past the booth if you have got your ticket (where about 20 people are lined up!) When you get there, tell the guys where you want to go (Vasa or Gamla Stan) and they will put you on the right boat. They run the first few boats just to those places to get the cruisers going, before they start the normal 'round the harbour' trip.

    Simon

Yes indeed, thanks for coming back and posting that info. We locals can't get behind the security gates anymore so your inside info is very valuable.

I wish more people would come back and post after their trips.

Hope you had a great time.

  9. I had my plans made starting the day with a reserved taxi. Initially, I was quoted 90SEK to Skeppsholmen from Stadsgarden 167. When I emailed to actually reserve it, they said that was a mistake and the price is 290.

On this thread, someone said the HOHO boat came at 9 when ships are docked. If instead I wanted to use public transportation, what do you recommend? After Skeppsholmen, I want to go to Gamla Stan, then city hall and back to Sodermalm areas previously discussed on this thread. Thanks for your help. Marlyne

290 seems a bit high to me from Stadsgården.

Just curious, what are your plans on Skeppsholmen? Modern Art Museum? It's a nice island but not many cruisers make it out there.

  10. I gave up on the massage thing....lol I booked the ship tour to the vasa and to the ice bar....Thinking some vodka could have the same relaxation influences as the massage...lol

I asked my wife about it and she said you would most likely have to book ahead to get the massage anyway. I know the Grand Hotel has a nice spa, and so does Sturebadet, but I would not want to just drop in for a rub-a-dub without an appointment.

    Have fun

  11. Hello

any recommendations for a spa experience for myself...my 15 year old daughter and my sister in law? We would like to try something different as opposed to traditional sight seeing...

WHy not get a swedish massage in sweden????

    Thanks

    Patty

I just had to find the answer to this question, I've always wondered about this.;)

Sooooo, I went into the next room and asked my wife (a 4th generation native Stockholmer) ...

Al - "Honey, what is a Swedish massage?"

    Maria - " I have no idea."

Al - " But, but you go for massage at least once a week, you've been doing it for years ..."

Maria - " Massage is massage, Swedes don't call it "Swedish massage", just massage."

Al - " Ahhhh, like George Costanza, getting that massage that time, you know 'rubbing and touching'?"

Maria - "That's a massage. If the fact that my masseuse is Swedish makes it a Swedish massage, well, there ya go, Swedish massage."

Al - " Thanks for clearing that up darling. Oh, I'm going to quote you on Cruise Critic, ok?"

    Maria - " Damn!!!"

    :)

    Enjoy

  12. Concerning the purchase of the 24hr card at the pier 167 kiosk...can you pay with a credit card or is it cash (SEK) only?

Since I can't get behind the gates I can't say 100% if they take credit cards at the info kiosk. However, Sweden runs on plastic so I would be VERY surprised if they did not. I would say 99.9% sure major credit cards are accepted.

    Enjoy your trip,

    Al

  13.

First, there had been some question as to whether the 24 hr transport pass could be purchased from the pier kiosk at Stadsgarden 167- I can verify that we WERE able to get the 24chr transport pass for 100SEK from the pier kiosk--get off the ship ASAP as the line gets long there from people not knowing what they want to do and asking questions.

Super! So glad to finally get definitive word on this. Since we (locals) can't get inside the security gates it is great to know that they sell the 24 hour card.

From the pier we took a city bus to Slussen--the pavement even is marked with a line to follow to the bus stop-(all buses stop in Slussen so we took the first one that came.)

One word here, be careful. I too thought that all buses that stopped at Londonviadukten went to Slussen, this is not quite true. Just make sure you get on one of the LONG buses and you should be fine for Slussen.

From City Hall we took the advice received on this thread and took bus 3 to the Tjarhorsplan stop on Sodermalm- we then walk to see La Mano statue on Katarinavagen before walking on Fjallgatan and on back to the ship. --Sodermalm is lovely and the view from Fjallgatan is wonderful- stopping for ice cream at I believe Kaffestuga. I am so glad we took some time to explore Sodermalm(as suggested by the locals on this thread) as it is quite lovely.

Only regret was that our ship was not in port longer- Stockholm is so lovely.

I hope this summary from our recent experience will help someone make the most of their time in this lovely city.

Glad you saw a slice of Södermalm, sounds like you had a great day, thanks for posting.

  14. I can definitely recommend the walk from the bus stop at Tjärhovsplan down to the ship at Stadsgården.

From the bus stop cross the street and walk a few steps back towards the sea. There is a small staircase up to Fjällgatan, one of the most charming streets we have in Stockholm. On one side there are very nice old houses and on the other a great view over Stockholm. At the end of Fjällgatan turn right down Erstagatan to Folkungagatan, where you turn left. This street will take you down towards the ship.

Here is a map of the recommended walk down: http://maps.google.se/maps/ms?client=firefox-a&hl=sv&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=100446628536787947860.000486f302393ee8c6554&t=h&z=15

    North-Bound,

What a great idea!!! Fantastic way to see a slice of Södermalm that not many cruisers get to see.

One could also do that stretch in reverse, leaving ship at 167 heading up Folkungatan to Erstagatan. If I were planning a walking day I think I would do it this way while I am still "fresh" in the morning.

However, if they taking the bus up there then it is a nice easy walk down the hill to the ship.

  15.

From what I have read, we should be able to pick up a 24h Transport Card from an information booth at the dock.

Now the question is how do we get 18 people to the Vasa Museum and then back to Gamla Stan and then back to Stadsgarten.

Just curious ... do you plan to purchase 18 travel cards? I suppose so because each person needs to have one of their own. I just hope the info booth at 167 is well stocked.

If you walk past the Viking terminal and veer to the left towards the busy road you will see a bus stop called "Londonviadukten". If you stay to the front, in other words don't walk back to the little shelter with the benches and stand near the red and white bus stop sign you can take any bus to Slussen. The buses to Slussen are usually the red, extra long buses. Remember, each passenger will need to have a ticket.

    Good luck

  16. We are due to dock at Stadsgården 165/167 on Sunday 6th June.

It seems that part of the dock (the most easterly end from the map I consulted) has no passenger terminal facilities (I may be wrong) so my intention was to walk along the quay to the Viking Lines terminal where I hope to be able to buy a one day Stockholm Bus/rail/metro ticket, then take the bus one stop from there to Slussen and transfer to the Train or another bus to Gamla Stan and then onwards as needed for the day.

    So my questions :

1 Is it possible to purchase the city public transport ticket at the Viking Terminal?

2 It's Swedens National Day. Does the public transport still run? Are the Museums Open? Would they still have the Changing of the Guard? (I read that their Majesties attend a big celebration in the evening after we have left so wondered if that might impact on normal ceremonials).

    Hoping you can help!

Since 911 the general public can no longer get near the ships so I can't confirm this 100%, but, there is a small kiosk inside the security area at 167 and I believe they sell the 24 hour travel cards (can anyone confirm this for the group?).

Public transport will be running on the holiday/weekend schedule. Museums should be open, and since it is National Day I would think the changing of the guard would pull out all the stops (cavalry, band, pointy hats etc). :)

    Enjoy,

    Al

  17. Al or Ultima,

Do you have a general idea of how long it should take, via taxi, to get from the Ice Bar to Frihamnen? We are thinking about making reservations for the 1500-1545 "tour" but have to be back on the ship by 1630. I don't know if 45 minutes is enough time to get back to the ship. We'll be there on a Wednesday.

Thank you so much for all your help.

    Tami

Depending on traffic I would say 15-20 minutes.

    Al

  18. Al, Thanks. I did finally figure out that it is the Baltic and further in is Lake Maleren. I want to walk along Fjallgatan to see the architecture and also walk or taxi to the Mariaberget area to see the architecture and the views then back down to the HOHO boat. We may spend a couple of hours in this area. Do you think these are good places to spend a little time? This is our fourth time in Stockholm. On our first trip we were on a land tour and stayed four nights, so we have seen most of the traditional tourist places. We love Gamla Stan and plan to spend several hours there. Marlyne

Super! An experienced Stockholm visitor that is back to see the real deal - congrats. Fjällgatan and Mariaberget and those areas of Södermalm are well worth a visit. Since you have been here before and seen all the "must sees" you can see Skansen too. I don't usually recommend Skansen to cruisers just becuase of the limited time they have, but if you have not been there and the weather is nice I would go, but take your time.

    Have a great time

    Al

  19. Al, I will definitely take your advice. Does the walkway along the river go all the way to the west of the island? How far is it from the Stadsgarden 167 to the Slussen Hilton? Is it a pleasant walk? Thanks. Marlyne

    Hi,

That is no river, it's the Baltic Sea :). Just keep walking and veer to the right and up the small hill. Ferry to the Vasa near the water on the right and the old town across the street to the left ... can't miss it. You can see the Hilton from there as well. I think it is a very nice walk, your destination is in sight the entire way.

    Al

  20. Al ~ quick question - I know you say its walkable from Stadsgarden 167 to Galma Stan but is it also possible to take a bus - number 76???

If so would we get it on Katarinavagen??

Is it easy to get from the dock to Katarinavagen - from the map I have it looks like train tracks between.

Thanks SO much for all your help!!!

    Hi,

Bus 76 is the bus that services Frihamnen, not Stadsgården.

From that point the buses only go to Slussen. There is a stop near the Viking Line terminal, but it is the last stop before slussen (end of the line). So, if you left the security area at Stadsgården 167 and followed the blue line past the Viking terminal and found your way to the busy street and turned to the left you will see a bus stop named Londonviadukten. All the buses will stop here and all the buses go to slussen.

If you want to walk and take the real scenic route, just continue past the Viking terminal and keep looking to the left and you will see a staircase on the other side of the busy road (be careful crossing) that will take you above to Katarinavägen. You can see "La Mano" here and the views of the city are nice and make for a pleasant stroll down the hill to slussen.
